Organizing Room by Room: Mastering the Master Bedroom ...

The room that is supposed to be the quiet retreat where you seek solace from a hectic day at the office or with the kids often turns into the family dumping ground. Leftover laundry to be folded, not-quite-done scraping projects and any other clutter that needs a quick hiding place seems to end up in the master bedroom.

An organized master bedroom not only gives you a personal retreat within your home, it helps you sleep better and can improve your va-voom (wink, wink?if you know what I mean). If that isn?t reason enough to get in gear and get it organized, organizing and decluttering any space in your home reduces stress caused by constantly looking a mess.

How to Start Organizing Your Master Bedroom

#1: Sort ? Figure out exactly what is in the master bedroom. A quick way to do this is to get bins and label them: to stay in bedroom, to go elsewhere, to donate, to trash, and start sorting!

#2: Gather ? Find like items and put them in a pile on the bed or floor. The reason is that people often don?t realize what they have until they see it. Once you have gathered all your handbags, for example, look for duplicates that you can purge.

#3: S-P-A-C-E ? Remember to Sort, Purge, Assign a home, Containerize and Evaluate. Purging important for clothing as an overfull closet will seep out onto the floor, dresser, and bed.

#4: Rationalize ? Review your collections from the gathering stage and decide what you want to keep and what you need to let go. A good rule of thumb is if it?s not in top form, if you haven?t worn it in a year or if you have multiple multiples.

#5: Create Storage ? Design your storage spaces within your master bedroom so that everything has a home. This includes your drawers where you will want to add drawer organizers.

#6: Limit ? Create a space for visitors to the master bedroom, like books or pet projects. Once that space is full, no more visitors are allowed to enter until something leaves. By limiting the space allocated to things that aren?t stored in the bedroom, you stop it from becoming a dumping ground.

#7: Go Vertical ? Take advantage of your vertical storage in the closet. Add bins, build extra tall shelving or add hooks to maximize the available storage.

#8: Start a Routine ? Make sure you clear off the horizontal surfaces on a weekly basis to avoid them becoming clutter magnets. The same goes for your other hot spots, like closet floors or corners.

If your master bedroom project seems overwhelming, set an organized-by goal and schedule regular time in your calendar to tackle one area at a time. The key is continuing to maintain that area so you are able to move to the next project when that one is complete.

Comodo Internet Security Premium (2013)

It's not hard to find free firewall protection, or free antivirus, but a free security suite that combines both is a rare bird. Comodo Internet Security Premium (2013) is one such. In addition to firewall and antivirus protection, it offers some interesting bonus features including sandboxing, a secure DNS replacement, and a Comodo-themed browser.

Like the standalone Comodo Antivirus, this suite has gotten a serious makeover for 2013. It main window, previously a bit busy, now focuses on a big security status icon and a rectangular landing zone. It looks almost the same as the firewall. The main difference is that dropping a program onto the landing zone scans it for malware, while in the firewall doing so runs the program within the sandbox.

If you want to know more about security status than just "it's green," you can click the Tasks link. This visibly "flips" the main window, revealing tasks arranged in four groups: General, Firewall, Sandbox, and Advanced. A few essential tasks, including scanning for malware, get their own buttons on the main window.

Functional Firewall
The firewall protection in Comodo Internet Security is exactly the same as what's found in Comodo Firewall (2013). Do please read that review. I'll summarize here.

The firewall stealths all ports, making your system invisible to outside attack. It automatically configures Internet access permission for trusted programs. When it encounters an unknown program trying to access the Internet, it asks you, the user, whether to allow it. As with Outpost Security Suite Pro 8, in addition to allowing or denying the connection you can choose a functional preset like Web browser or email client.

The dozen leak test program I tested slipped right past the firewall's program control, but the Behavior Blocker detected suspicious activity in every case. Even so, some of them managed to make an Internet connection.

Like ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall, Comodo didn't detect any of the thirty exploits I threw at it. Unlike ZoneAlarm, it caved to some of my direct attack techniques. The firewall could use a little toughening up.

Other Shared Features
The Behavior Blocker, turned off by default in the standalone firewall, blocks access to critical system areas and offers to run suspicious programs in the sandbox as "partially limited." This restricts the program's ability to make permanent changes to the system.

In previous years, Comodo's behavior-based detection system generated a deluge of popups color-coded red, orange, yellow, and green. With the 2013 remodel, the popups are both fewer and less garish. However, just as in previous years, both good and bad programs get slapped down by Behavior Blocker.

I tried to install twenty older PCMag utilities and noted Comodo's reaction. In all but two cases it found the installer suspicious and offers to sandbox it. Five installers thus treated failed utterly, and most of the rest ran into problems saving files, registering DLLs, or updating the Registry. Only seven managed to install and run correctly. If you're totally sure a program is valid, don't let the Behavior Blocker sandbox it.

Comodo re-routes your system's DNS lookup through Comodo Secure DNS to protect against pharming and other DNS-based attacks. Secure DNS also aims to steer you away from malicious or fraudulent websites. However, in testing it hardly blocked any phishing sites, with a detection rate 91 percentage points below Norton's and 47 percent below Internet Explorer 8 alone. See the article How We Test Antiphishing for a full explanation of my antiphishing test.

Comodo's Dragon browser, installed with the suite, is a hardened version of Chrome. Dragon adds a couple of handy button that let you evaluate the safety of the current page or easily share it on social media sites.

The optional desktop widget keeps you apprised of security status and offers links to launch your browsers in the sandbox. A sandboxed program can't make permanent changes to the system, so even if you're hit by a drive-by download or other malicious website, your system remains safe. For desired changes, like legitimate downloaded files, Comodo provides a shared folder that's accessible both inside the sandbox and out. A green border around sandboxed program windows serves as a reminder.

For even more security, you can invoke the Virtual Kiosk, a fully sandboxed and isolated environment. You can leave the Kiosk and re-enter it with your virtualized changes intact, or wipe it back to its initial state if you suspect a problem. As noted, all of these features are also found in the standalone free Comodo Firewall.

Txtr Beagle takes a trip to the FCC, gets splayed for our amusement

Ever wanted to see inside an e-reader? Txtr's Beagle ultra-budget unit was deposited at the FCC's subterranean facility to see if its Bluetooth radio would fry your mind like only Thomas Pynchon can. The hardware was dissected and photographed for posterity, which we've added here to sate your curiosity. Now that the Beagle has been marked as safe enough to finish that copy of Times' Arrow we never got around to, we might see it wind up for sale in the US -- assuming Txtr can convince prospective partners AT&T and Sprint of the benefits of encouraging its customers to read.

Instant View: December personal income up 2.6 percent, weekly job claims

NEW YORK (Reuters) - American incomes rose in December by the most in eight years, a positive sign for consumer spending that could help the economy sustain momentum early this year.

Personal income for Americans rose 2.6 percent last month, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. That was the biggest increase since December 2004 and well above analysts' expectations for a 0.8 percent gain.

Personal income rose in November and December, the Commerce Department said, because of special dividends and accelerated bonuses to beat increases in taxes this year. Personal income

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits bounced off five-year lows last week, pulling them back to levels consistent with modest job growth.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 38,000 to a seasonally adjusted 368,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week's claims figure was unrevised. Economists polled by Reuters had expected claims to increase to 350,000.

COMMENTS:

STEVE GOLDMAN, PRINCIPAL, GOLDMAN MANAGEMENT, SHORT HILLS, NEW JERSEY:

"S&P futures firming up a little, we did expect a surge (in claims). We're getting back to the norm there, this was not really surprising news.

"Data will become more important as we are now moving away from headline risk. The environment going forward will likely see improvement in economic reports."

SAM BULLARD, SENIOR ECONOMIST, WELLS FARGO SECURITIES, CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA:

PERSONAL SPENDING: "Consumers finally realized about the tax increase so they pulled back a bit on their spending during the holiday season.

PERSONAL INCOME: "You had some wage and salary growth. Certainly, there was a distribution of capital with expected increases in taxes on dividends and capital gains."

MARK GRANT, SOUTHWEST SECURITIES MANAGING DIRECTOR IN FORT LAUDERDALE:

"Personal income numbers were substantially better than expected and the jobless claims weren't too far out of line. A rise there was expected and greatly expected by seasonality."

MARKETS:

BONDS: Prices for U.S. 30-year Treasuries pared gains. The 30-year bonds pared early gains, with yields spiking as high as 3.1736 percent. Those Treasuries last traded up 8/32 to yield 3.167 percent.

Netanyahu Has Become Enmeshed In His Aide's ... - Business Insider

JERUSALEM ? Power, acolytes, sexual fetishism, misdirected emails, a suspicious wife. For the past few days, a live-action political telenovela including all of these elements has been playing out on Israel's normally straight-shooting news channels.

The story began to unfold days after last week's election, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed his former chief of staff, Natan Eshel, to head his coalition negotiations.

Eshel was a dangerous and confusing choice. He was forced to resign as chief of staff about a year ago after?confessing to sexual harassment?charges. The accusation was rather graphic: A female employee of the prime minister's office reported that while on a trip abroad, Eshel followed her, spied on her text messages and surreptitiously took photographs of intimate parts of her body under meeting tables.

The victim reported the behavior to the prime minister?s military attach?, Maj. Gen. Yochanan Locker, and cabinet secretary Zvi Hauser, but declined to press charges.

Eshel, who signed a plea agreement and resigned, admitted to the misconduct, was reprimanded by the Civil Service Commission and was prohibited from returning to government service.

Hauser, on the other hand, was forced to resign by a furious Netanyahu ? or, depending on whose version you take to, by the mercurial Mrs. Sara Netanyahu, the prime minister's wife.

Mrs. Netanyahu is renowned for her meddling in personnel-related matters of her husband's bureau. One of her least favorites, another former chief of staff, Naftali Bennett, was once forced to undergo a polygraph?when accused of having betrayed the trust of the Netanyahu family in ways never made entirely clear.

Eshel, meanwhile, has always been held in good favor by Mrs. Netanyahu, which might partly explain how he has managed to stick around.

Shimon Shiffer, senior diplomatic correspondent for Yedioth Acharonoth, Israel's largest daily newspaper, says, "Sara involves herself in matters of state, which goes directly against Israeli laws and customs. Israelis are just fed up and feel disgusted."

Now it seems that Eshel, a portly man in late middle age and a religious Jew, never really left.

In late December, a month before the elections, Eshel sent a letter to the prime minister's legal counsel, Shlomit Barnea-Farago, in which he stated that Netanyahu and his foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, requested his services as head coalition negotiator. He asked the lawyer if his earlier plea bargain would pose any problem.

But that is only where the most recent problems began. For one, Barnea-Farago, who by law must defend the employee who accused Eshel of harassment, agreed to the deal. No less mortifying, Eshel misdirected his email, sending it to another woman whose name begins with Sh ? Labor party leader Shelly Yachimovich, who yesterday?posted the email?on her Facebook page.

By the time of the Facebook posting, the coalition team of Yair Lapid, Netanyahu's principal negotiating partner, had announced their?refusal to meet with Eshel?for any purpose.

A leading feminist organization, the Israel Women's Network, demanded on Tuesday that the prime minister and Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein abide by the terms of Eshel's plea agreement and bar him from returning to public life.

In a fit of pique, Eshel told the Israeli website Ynet that protests to his possible appointment were "blown out of proportion," and added, "apparently, women have no problem lying."

"Eshel isn't really the story,"?writes Ha'aretz political commentator Yossi Verter. "He's just the errand boy. The problem is the boss who sent him. The fact that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted Eshel, who was forced to leave public service in disgrace, to head his coalition negotiating team or even to be a senior member of it, proves that the prime minister hasn't yet internalized the primary lesson of this election campaign, which, succinctly put, would be, 'It's the new politics, stupid!'"

In?his blog, Ha'aretz diplomatic affairs correspondent Barak Ravid warns that however loud the outcry, "As long as Netanyahu remains prime minister, Eshel will be there, too."

Which foods make Americans ill? Whether chicken or salad, food safety at home is key to avoiding illness

Jan. 31, 2013 ? A new study analyzing outbreaks of foodborne illness has found contaminated salad greens make the most people sick, but contaminated poultry have resulted in the most deaths. In light of this study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Home Food Safety program -- a collaboration between the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and ConAgra Foods -- encourages Americans, rather than avoid certain foods, to practice safe food handling at home instead.

"While this study found produce accounted for nearly half of food poisoning illnesses, everyone should still eat plenty of fruits and vegetables," says registered dietitian and Academy Spokesperson Rachel Begun.

"Safe food-handling procedures can help protect you from foodborne illnesses while still allowing you to enjoy these tasty and nutritious foods."

"One of the most important things you can do to stay healthy is to wash your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with soap and water, especially when it comes to the particularly nasty norovirus," Begun said. "The norovirus accounted for 46 percent of the illnesses according to this study, and while hand sanitizer is great to reduce the spread of some germs, research shows us that soap and water is best," she said.

Begun encouraged Americans to visit www.HomeFoodSafety.org for tips to reduce the risk of food poisoning, and offered the following advice:

Produce

  • Properly wash all fresh fruits and vegetables, whether they have a peel or not, with cool tap water just before eating.
  • Cut away any damaged or bruised areas before preparing or eating. Remove and discard outer leaves of lettuce.
  • Dry produce with a clean cloth or paper towel to further reduce bacteria that may be present.
  • Cut all fruits and vegetables on a separate cutting board from raw meats and fish. Color-coded cutting boards can help you remember which is which.
  • Cook raw sprouts, such as alfalfa and clover, to significantly reduce the risk of illness.

Meat and Poultry

  • When buying and handling meats, always look for the Safe Food Handling label on the package, and make sure the meat is tightly wrapped. At the grocery store, pick up the meat last and ask to have it bagged separately from other groceries to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Store meat in the coldest part of the refrigerator at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Use fresh, raw chicken within one- to two days of purchase, meats within three to four days, and throw away ground meats, sausage and organ meats after two days. Cooked meats should be eaten or frozen within three to four days.
  • Wash hands thoroughly for 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat, and use a separate cutting board for raw meats and fish to avoid cross contamination.
  • Defrost meats in the refrigerator or in the microwave by using the defrost setting. Never defrost on the counter. Cook meat that has been thawed in the microwave immediately and do not re-freeze thawed meat.
  • Use a food thermometer to ensure meats are cooked to the safe minimum internal temperature. Find the correct temperature with the Is My Food Safe? app or the Safe Grilling Guide.

Learn more about food safety at www.HomeFoodSafety.org or by downloading the free Is My Food Safe? app (www.homefoodsafety.org/app), and encourage children to wash hands properly with the downloadable Hand Washing Maze.
