10 Gigabit per-second connection between US and China demoed

Internet2You, sir or ma'am, should probably not get too excited. Chances are, this trans-Pacific 10 Gigabit link won't do you any good, personally. On the other hand, researchers working together across the oceanic divide have tons to cheer about. The China Education and Research Network, the National Science Foundation and Indiana University worked together with BGI, one of the largest genomics organizations in the world, to christen the connection by transferring 24 Gigabytes of genomic data from Beijing to UC Davis in under 30 seconds. As a benchmark, the same file was sent between the same locations over the regular ol' Internet and it took over 26 hours. The high-speed link should prove to be a major boon for genetic research and DNA sequencing.

Intervention program in college instrumental musicians, with kinematics analysis of cello and flute playing: a combined program of yogic breathing and muscle strengthening-flexibility exercises.

Source

School of Music, College of the Arts, University of South Florida, 4202 East Fowler Avenue MUS 101, Tampa, FL 33620-7350, USA. Tel 813-974-2311, fax 813-974-8721. slee@usf.edu.

Abstract

College musicians encounter health risks not dissimilar to those of professional musicians. Fifteen collegiate instrumental musicians participated in the intervention program of yogic-breathing and muscle-strengthening and flexibility exercises for 8 weeks. Pre- and post-intervention data from the Health-Pain-Injury Inventory (HPI) and the Physical & Musical-Performance Efficacy Assessment Survey (PME) were analyzed for the effects of the program on the musicians' physical and musical-performance efficacy. HPI results showed that the majority of our sample had healthy lifestyles and minimal pain and injuries but irregular eating and exercise habits. The pre-intervention PME data showed a high level of musical efficacy (i.e., awareness of music technique, tone, and flow) but a low-level of physical efficacy (i.e., awareness of posture, tension, and movement flexibility). Post-intervention data showed that the program improved physical efficacy by increased awareness of posture and tension. In 2 volunteer musicians, kinematics motion analysis was conducted for exploratory purposes. Our cellist played the scale using a larger range of motion (ROM) in right shoulder flexion and abduction and slightly increased rotation while keeping decreased right elbow ROM after the intervention program. The flutist shifted the body weight from one foot to the other more in the second playing post-intervention. These changes can be attributed to the increased physical efficacy that allowed freedom to express musicality. Findings from these case scenarios provide empirically based hypotheses for further study. We share our experience so that others may use our model and instruments to develop studies with larger samples.

Debt crisis: France and Germany clash at euro summit

Both Spain and Italy are demanding that the eurozone show them "solidarity" because they have implemented EU austerity measures, but have still seen substantial increases in the cost of their government borrowing on the bond markets.

Yesterday Spanish bond yields passed the critical 7pc mark again.

EU officials have confirmed that negotiations have begun on plans to use eurozone bail-out funds, worth ?740bn (?593bn), to buy new Spanish and Italian bonds to ease borrowing costs at debt auctions over the summer.

The moves have run into opposition from Germany ahead of a vote in the Bundestag parliament today, where Mrs Merkel requires a two-thirds majority of MPs to ratify the creation of a permanent eurozone bail-out fund.

In order to prevent a parliamentary rebellion over the new fund, which means an extra contribution of ?168bn from German taxpayers, Mrs Merkel insists that help for Italy or Spain be attached to strict conditions, seen as politically toxic in both Rome and Madrid.

The temperature of the debate was raised after a senior German official close to the chancellor poured scorn on the demands being made by the Italian and Spanish.

"We would warn against exaggerated scaremongering," said the official.

Mario Monti, Italy's technocrat prime minister, is demanding help to bring down borrowing costs currently at 6pc, near crisis point, in return for pushing through controversial pension and labour reforms.

Unless he can show progress, Mr Monti, who is an unelected appointee as head of government, could face a rebellion in the Italian parliament, tipping Italy into political turmoil that would deepen its borrowing problems, plunging the eurozone into its worst crisis yet.

Giorgio Napolitano, Italy's president, yesterday warned that he was worried by growing conflict amid the Italian political parties, jeopardising Mr Monti's technocrat, national unity government.

"It is worrying that at the same time, the disputes and conflicts are increasing among the parties that support the government," he said.

How to Enjoy Retirement Benefits

Many people look forward to enjoying their retirement benefits once they are already of retiring age.? In the United States, there are quite a lot of retirement benefits that the people could actually enjoy should they reach this age.? In this way, though they are already unemployed, they still get to enjoy various services or other things that could help to make their lives more secure and comfortable.? For those who have beneficiaries, they might even get to share this with them.? It all depends on what type of benefits will they be able to get once they are retired and rely solely on their financial independence.

There are people who are actually quite apprehensive about retiring, thinking that they will simply be stuck doing nothing.? This is a fallacy because many people say that retirement is something that should be enjoyed fully.? There are many retirement benefits that retirees could enjoy alone or even with their entire family.? Retirees have to keep in mind that they are now living more secure and comfortable lives, which means that they could already start making use of the benefits that they ?saved up? for.? For those who have prepared extensively for their retirement, they could certainly look forward to a very good one.

There are certain retirement benefits that retirees could enjoy that are granted by the government.? Such benefits include tax exemptions and benefits related to Social Security.? These benefits help retirees to feel more comfortable and enjoy various luxuries in life that they may not have been able to experience while they were still working.? How people deal with their retirement actually depends on how the retiree looks at his or her situation.? Some may enjoy their new benefits while there are those who may not enjoy them because they do not like not being able to work like before.

People say that the retirement benefits are also meant to be somewhat like rewards for the many years that a person has rendered his or her services and expertise in whatever field he or she has chosen.? In order to compensate for the things that were asked of him or her in the past, the benefits are there for them to enjoy.? In the past, people have to file for leaves just to be able to spend time with the family, but upon retiring, they could readily go to vacation in various places without having to ask permission from the boss.

?

Retirees need not scorn the fact that they are already unemployed or retired from their jobs because they have certainly earned all the benefits that they worked so hard for.? Retirement is something that people could look forward to, due to the fact that they could enjoy their lives and time more.? People have to know how to think more clearly and more positively, especially when dealing with retirement.? There are many retirement benefits that retirees could get to enjoy with their families, from tax exemptions, to vacations, and even to putting up their own businesses or houses that will be the proof of their hard work.

HBT: Vizquel says he'll retire at season's end

Omar Vizquel has hinted at the likelihood several times, but he made it clear today that this is his final season in the majors.

NESN has the translated quotes:

?This will be my last year,? Vizquel said in Spanish. ?I?ve enjoyed this game a lot, but I think it?s time to pursue a new career as a coach or manager, and hopefully I?ll get that opportunity in the future.?

Vizquel said his initial plan is to coach in Venezuela this winter and that he eventually hopes to be a major league manager.

As has been clear for some time, Vizquel will fall short of 3,000 career hits; he?s at 2,854 right now. Still, whether one believes he belongs in the Hall of Fame or not, he has had an incredible career. When he arrived at age 22, he was such a weak hitter that most were skeptical he?d last as a regular. Instead, he turned himself into an All-Star in his 30s and then, through remarkable fitness, remained a viable shortstop into his 40s.

Vizquel will retire as an 11-time Gold Glover and the all-time leader in career games at shortstop. He ranks second among active players in hits, seventh in runs scored and fifth in steals.

Gmail for iOS gets notification support and persistent logins, brings joy to Apple mobile massesIt took quite awhile for the official Gmail app to arrive for our Apple-toting friends, but when it debuted, it lacked many features enjoyed by Android users. Well, today the iOS Gmail app got a refresh that brings it a bit closer to the green bot version. Chiefly, notification support to allow folks to set up banner alerts and lock screen notifications, so they no longer have to check their inbox for new messages. Not only that, the app now has persistent login capability, meaning no more re-entry of your Gmail credentials every time you're preoccupied slaying space pigs for a few hours. Interested parties can hit the source link to get the new goodies.

A Holistic Approach to Health in Early Recovery: Withdrawal and ...

These days, we all know someone affected by addiction. If it?s not something we ourselves grapple with, then it?s a friend, sibling, or parent. If you?re lucky enough to not be personally affected by the disease of addiction, you need look no further than the tabloids to witness the latest celebrity entering rehab. How many people who try to get sober stay that way? In their latest census, Alcoholics Anonymous reports a whopping 80 percent dropout rate in the first year. [1] This statistic is alarming in its illustration of how difficult it is to get and stay sober. The odds are stacked against an early recovering addict or alcoholic for a myriad of reasons that range from grappling with cravings, to picking up the pieces of broken relationships, to healing a broken body.

Barwick will be joined by two other Langley-based competitors Eleonore Elstone and Ashley Gowanlock, who also competed at the 2008 Paralympics. The fourth member of the team, Jody Schloss of Toronto, will be making her Paralympic debut in London. The 2012 Paralympic Games run August 29-September 9 in London.

The Canadian Para-Equestrian team riders have had remarkable success over the past 12 months, achieving podium performances at international events in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium, Germany and the United States, which has put the team in fourth place in the world heading into the games, said Equine Canada in announcing the team selection.

"I feel very confident that our team is well prepared for the Games," said National Team Coach Andrea Taylor, who will be accompanying Canada's team for a second time to the Paralympics. "This team, from the athletes, the support personnel, to the leadership group, works tremendously well together and has a solid history of international experience. We're ready to go for it!"

Barwick, who rode Maile at the 2008 Games, will be lending Maile to Gowanlock for the 2012 Games. Barwick will also be sharing her mount Ferdonia 2 with Gowanlock, and Barwick will also be riding Off to Paris, owned by Equine Canada.

Elstone will be riding Zareno and Why Not G, and Schloss will be riding her own mount, Inspector Rebus.

Barwick started riding horses at the age of seven. She moved quickly through the ranks of Pony Club and began to compete in both eventing and show jumping.? Barwick was so entranced with the thrill of competition and accomplishment that she dreamed of becoming a professional stunt person specializing in horsemanship.

But Barwick?s life took a tragic turn in 2000, when a bale of hay from an unstable stack fell on top of her. The incident broke her back, and paralyzed her from the waist down. One year after the accident, Barwick shifted her dreams away from stunt riding, and quickly refocused on para-equestrian sport with the help of coach Sandra Verda.

Since delving into para-dressage, Barwick has actively pursued international competition with outstanding success. She earned great results at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, but most remarkable is her gold and silver medal performances at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Hong Kong. Along with her horse Maile, Barwick's success helped propel the sport of para-dressage into the spotlight.

A strong support team will accompany the riders and horses to London, including coaches, chef d'?quipe, grooms, a physiotherapist and veterinarian, working to ensure that the world-class athletes are fully prepared to achieve greatness at the 2012 Games.

"Canada will once again field a strong equestrian team in what promises to be a memorable competition in iconic Greenwich Park," said Ga?tan Tardif, Team Canada's Chef de Mission for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. "I very much look forward to watching our Canadian athletes in action."

"I am very confident that we have a strong team, with some outstanding horses. We expect to be very competitive at the Games," said Elizabeth Quigg, chef d'?quipe for the Canadian Para-Equestrian Team.

"We have a very talented team of athletes, horses, coaches, and team personnel who have achieved great success over the past year," said Amie O'Shaughnessy, Director of Para-Equestrian and Paralympic Team Manager at Equine Canada. "The support of Own the Podium, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, and Sport Canada combined with the tremendous efforts of the athletes, has ranked the Canadian team fourth in the world heading into the Games, which will make for a very exciting experience in London."

The selection process for the Canadian Paralympic riders was based on their performances at international events during the qualifying period running between January through to June 1, 2012.

At the Paralympic Games, individual medals are awarded to athletes in the individual and freestyle tests, as well as an overall team medal.?Seventy-eight athletes will compete at the Paralympic Games during the 12 days of competition.

Para-Equestrian is one of Canada's most successful international disciplines, achieving an individual gold medal and an individual silver medal at the 2008 Paralympic Games, as well as two individual bronze medals at the 2004 Paralympic Games.

Fans can follow the team's performance during the Games online at?Canadian Paralympic Committee, as well as at Equine Canada.

Equine Canada acknowledges the funding contributions of the following partners-Own the Podium, Canadian Olympic Committee, Canadian Paralympic Committee and Sport Canada.

Residents to rally against northwest oil well

Dale Hodges would rather not see a day when residents have to walk around an oil or gas well in the middle of Olympic Plaza.

?

It may sound like a long shot, but the Calgary alderman believes it could happen without an urban drilling policy in place.

?We?re trying to get the province?s attention on actually having some policies ? which they don?t ? on urban areas,? Hodges said.

?I?m not holding my breath, but hopefully the province will decide there should be some rules.?

City council will discuss how it can best accomplish that Monday, but on Sunday there will be a rally for what Lowe called the start to the conversation.

The Rocky Ridge Royal Oak Community Association (RRROCA) is hosting the rally to stop drilling that is being proposed north of Royal Oak, west of 85 St. N.W.

Lowe said the pitch to drill is going to happen again and again.

?The entire City of Calgary sits on a huge methane bed, which means that sooner or later somebody will want to extract that,? he said.

?The issue and dealing with the issue really falls in the hands of the province ? it?s their legislation and their boards that are regulating this at the moment.?

Ward Sutherland, an RRROCA spokesman, called the prospect of a drill site 400 metres from homes and a major watershed ?alarming,? one his group has been opposed to since the beginning.

The Energy Resources Conservation Board approved the application despite an official letter of objection provided by the city. The association and some aldermen share concerns of transportation of raw crude along city roads.

But after recent conversations and a tour of the area with Alberta Energy Minister Ken Hughes and Calgary-West MLA Sandra Jansen, Sutherland is optimistic the ball will get rolling in their favour.

?It was a complete (180 degrees) from the previous minister,? Sutherland said of his discussions with Hughes.

?He was very open.

?He said he would get back and guarantee some commitments and I?m confident that Sandra will be making an announcement (Sunday).?

Neither Hughes nor Jansen could be reached for comment. Sunday?s rally runs from noon to 2 p.m. at the Royal Oak Centre.

How to Get Rid of Bloating | HEALTH BENEFITS

Suffering from belly bloat is a common but annoying disorder. You feel uncomfortable, lethargic, unmotivated, embarrassed because of your bulging belly and the rumble it makes, and are sometimes in pain.

Let us look at how to stop bloating and the basic lifestyle changes you can implement which are especially effective if you feel bloated after eating.

Stop overeating

Eat smaller, more frequent meals for better health and a bloat-free waistline.

Change your eating habits

Eating quickly increases pressure on your stomach and produces more gas. Sit down, chew your food well, and eat your meals in a leisurely manner, giving the food plenty of time to digest.

Drinking tea or coffee on the run is equally bad with excess air accompanying each sip and gulp. Savor your beverages by drinking them slowly.

Limit sugar substitutes

Sodas, sweets and chewing gum contain huge quantities of artificial sweeteners, especially sorbitol and xylitol which many people find difficult to digest, resulting in bloating, gas and diarrhea. Rather have real sugar than substitutes.

Cut out sodas

The bubbles in fizzy drinks cause bloating. Also refrain from drinking excessively hot or cold beverages.

Stop eating junk and processed food

Fried, oily food and high salt content cause bloating.

Abstain from carbohydrates at night

Bread and pasta cause you to retain water. Avoid eating them at night to be puff-free the next morning.

Early morning water and lemon juice

Start your day by drinking a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon; it speeds up waste elimination and removes toxins.

Eat potassium rich foods

Bananas, cantaloupe, mangoes, spinach, tomatoes, nuts, asparagus and fresh chopped parsley regulate the fluid balance in your body and stop bloating.

If you suffer from constipation, eating sufficient fruit, vegetables and high fiber, such as oatmeal, will improve your digestion and remedy your bloating problem.

Drink water

Water flushes out your system and aids digestion. Instead of alcohol, caffeine and colas, drink plain water and natural teas.

Limit excess air

Do not eat and talk at the same time, drink out of a straw, chew gum nor smoke because the surplus air accompanying these activities causes you to bloat.

Eat foods easily digested by your body

Bland foods, such as fish, chicken, soya based foods, yogurt and rice do not tax your digestive system.

Limit gas producing foods

Notice which raw vegetables cause you to bloat, then either boil them or do not eat them at all. The cellulose in cabbage, peas and beans is hard to digest and may cause you to puff up.

Other common gas producing foods are cruciferous vegetables, root vegetables, lentils, prunes and garlic.

Menstruation

Bloating, together with water weight gain and mood swings, are associated with premenstrual tension. Ensure you get 1200 milligrams calcium and 200 to 400 milligrams magnesium daily. Both nutrients help relieve PMS symptoms, including bloating. If you wish, take Midol which contains a mild diuretic.

Natural remedies

Add turmeric, coriander, caraway and cumin when cooking.

Naturists claim teas made of ginger, savory from the mint family, lime from a linden tree, peppermint, rosemary, and caraway are effective for bloating relief.

They may be right because ginger tea helps with stomach upsets and peppermint oil in tea or warm water after a big meal aids digestion.

Exercise

Walking for 15 to 20 minutes a day moves food through your digestive tract, thereby reducing bloating and combating constipation. Other benefits include less severe menstrual cramps, eliminating toxins by perspiring, and shedding body fat.

Apply pressure

Massaging your abdomen helps evacuate gas and reduces bloating. Start by pressing your fingers near your right hip, slide up towards the ribs, move across and down in a circular motion.

Supplements and home remedies

Taking a digestive enzyme with each meal provides relief, especially when bloating results from a problem with your digestive tract, such as diverticulosis. Obtain digestive enzymes with the active ingredients lipase, protease and amylase, from any health store. Restaurant owners should actually hand out digestive enzymes instead of after-dinner mints to all patrons who selected anything other than raw foods from their menus.

Probiotics are 'good bacteria' which help keep you regular and bloat-free. Your intestinal tract has loads of bacteria, some beneficial, some harmful, which play an important role in the functioning of your digestive and immune systems.

Probiotics encourage the growth and replenishment of healthy microflora. They crowd out the bad bacteria which cause disease, yeasts and parasites in your intestines, they help digest and absorb your food, eliminate wastes and toxins by restoring normal and regular bowel function, and maintain a healthy intestinal function.

Ideally 85% of your bacteria should be friendly with 15% unfriendly. Probiotic supplements can be found in capsule, powder or liquid form, or in foods such as kefir and yogurt.

If you do not consume enough fruit and vegetables, take nutritional supplements that contain dietary fibers especially during the holidays or when celebrating to better handle the foods that cause you to swell up.

Apple cider vinegar helps ease digestive symptoms and gets rid of bloating and gas pain.

Lactobacillus supplements also help maintain intestinal health.

Bismuth, the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, is an element on the periodic table. 100% natural, taken before or directly after a meal reduces swelling caused by food allergies and neutralizes the odor of your flatulence.

Medication

If you take antibiotics, which destroy your friendly bacteria, take B complex vitamins too.

Some oral contraceptive pills cause your stomach to distend, in which case ask your physician to prescribe a different one.

Once you incorporate these lifestyle changes, they should cure you or at least relieve bloating.

If your condition persists, let us look at what else it might be and what you can do about it.

Food allergy

If you bloat after eating certain foods, keep a food journal where you write down everything you eat, together with any symptoms which appear. Rotate foods until you identify which foods trigger bloating and avoid them.

Although you may not test positive for food allergies, you may have a food intolerance. Common culprits include yeast, wheat, where the gluten causes excess gas to be produced, and milk.

Lactose intolerance

This means your body does not produce the enzyme lactase and your digestive system cannot digest the lactose in dairy foods. It then ferments and forms gases which overstretch your bowel.

How do you know if you are lactose intolerant? Drink a glass of milk. If you experience gas, bloating or diarrhea, avoid dairy products or drink lactose free milk.

Yogurt's active bacteria cultures produce lactase, so if you want to eat cheese without bloating afterwards, add a bowl of yogurt to your morning ritual.

Irritable bowel syndrome

IBS, characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, may be the cause of your bloating.

Eat more fiber and give up coffee, cigarettes and spicy foods which irritate your colon.

Some people swear by going on a detoxification diet two or three times a year to give your body a chance to cleanse itself of accumulated toxins.

Diabetes

Diabetics often have problems with bloating and diarrhea, especially if they take large doses of metformin or glucophage.

Diabetics with nerve damage in their stomach may find food collects but does not empty properly, resulting in excessive belching. Medication eases this problem.

Medication

Although over-the-counter products offer quick relief by suppressing the symptoms, the benefits will be short-lived because they do not eliminate the cause.

Common effective medications such as Gas-X, Beano, Phazyme and Flatulex, when taken with each meal, help break up gas pockets in the stomach, thereby relieving bloating and gas pain.

The pain is not actually caused by your swollen stomach but by abdominal contractions not synchronizing properly. When your intestinal wall pulls in different directions it feels like stomach cramps.

Most bloating medication contain enzymes like alpha-galactosidase which help digest the sugars in carbohydrates, the main culprit of your indigestion problems.

Pink Pepto-Bismol type products have a salicylate ingredient which is like aspirin. It will alleviate some of your abdominal pain but if it disagrees with you, try Gas-X or Phazyme which contain simethicone.

Activated charcoal

Consider using this over-the-counter supplement. When taken with meals, it prevents or at least reduces the amount of gas produced.

It sometimes causes irregular looking stools and constipation so do not be alarmed, and in case it affects the absorption of prescription medicine, take it an hour or two after any scheduled medication.

Tips and warning

Bloating and gas pain should dissipate quite quickly. If not, if it becomes more than a slight annoyance, or if accompanied by bloody or tarry stools, fever, night sweats or weight loss, consult your doctor.

He might suggest a colonoscopy to help him diagnose your problem. Endure it because your colon plays a major role in your life and until it is sorted out, you will feel unwell. Once he determines the medical cause, he will treat and cure you of your suffering.[Refer:singlecupcoffeemakerschoice.com]

Bristol Palin Fails To Attract Viewers To New Reality Show

LOS ANGELES, June 21 (Reuters) - Bristol Palin tripped up with TV audiences after less than 750,000 people watched the first episode of her new reality show.
Palin, who found fame in 2008 as the accidentally pregnant unmarried daughter of Republican conservative U.S. vice-presidential contender Sarah Palin, chronicled her life with her now three-year-old son Tripp in the Lifetime show "Life's a Tripp."
But according to audience figures on Thursday, just 726,000 watched the show when it debuted on Wednesday. By contrast, some 3.3 million watched the latest installment of MTV's "Teen Mom" reality series on Wednesday.
"Life's a Tripp" got unenthusiastic reviews from TV critics and proved no match with the U.S. public for the polarizing but charismatic Sarah Palin. The 2010 TV series "Sarah Palin's Alaska" attracted some five million viewers on its first outing, but was canceled after one season. (Reporting By Jill Serjeant; Editing by Paul Simao)

E-book price fixing trial set for 2013: Apple, Macmillan and Penguin prepare for courtroom brawl

The Justice Department meant business when it accused Apple and five other publishers of price-rigging e-books, and are officially taking Cupertino and two publishers to court. In a hearing on Friday, Judge Denise Cote set a bench trial for June 3, 2012, putting Apple, Macmillan and Penguin Group on the defense. The government's allegations focus largely on agency pricing, which sees booksellers taking a 30 percent cut of each sale in lieu of buying the books at wholesale and setting their own prices. Apple and Macmillan have already denied the Justice Department's claims, of course -- but that wasn't on the stand, was it?

Harvin requests trade, skips Vikings practice

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? Percy Harvin was nowhere to be found at the Minnesota Vikings' mandatory minicamp practice Wednesday afternoon, and no one seems to know when the star receiver will be back in purple.

Unhappy with several issues with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2009, Harvin requested a trade, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

After participating in a light walk-through practice on Wednesday morning with his teammates, Harvin wasn't present for the full afternoon practice. Head coach Leslie Frazier declined to go into detail on Harvin's absence and said he wasn't sure if one of the team's most important players would be around for the final day Thursday.

"We're going to talk more in detail," Frazier said. "We have a lot of things to talk about."

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said the organization considers Harvin a cornerstone player and will work to resolve any issues that have upset him.

"We have no interest at all in trading Percy Harvin," Spielman said. "We drafted Percy Harvin here. He's a key part of our organization. He's a key part of our football team. Any issues that are out there, or reported, we always handle those internally, and we'll continue to handle those internally."

The situation seemingly came out of nowhere this week, surprising many Vikings players and coaches when Harvin voiced his frustrations with the team Tuesday at the opening of minicamp.

"I just put it this way: There's a lot of different things that have to be sorted out," Harvin said Tuesday. "Just haven't been really happy lately. We've got a couple of things to work on. I'm here in the classroom. We'll go from there."

Harvin declined to go into detail about his grievances. He is due to make $915,000 in the fourth year of a five-year rookie deal. That total is much lower than veterans Michael Jenkins and Jerome Simpson, with neither coming close to his production on the field.

But indications are that Harvin's issues go far deeper than just money. His role in the offense, which diminished greatly last season when the Vikings reached the red zone, and the organization's decision to go into a rebuilding phase coming off of consecutive last-place finishes in the NFC North combined with his modest salary all figure to factor into his mindset.

Requesting a trade now would be a curious move if his main motivation is a new contract. Most players in similar situations first voice their concerns, then threaten to holdout of training camp before going as far as to request a trade.

Harvin did not speak to reporters on Wednesday, but did post a message on his Twitter account.

"Fans I said I have issues to be worked out money not at all being the problem," Harvin wrote...I've (done) everything asked and more..."

Spielman would not say if money was an issue, but also reiterated the organization's approach to signing players to extensions.

"Our philosophy has always been as players enter the last year of their contract we have a history of extending players going into the last year of their contract," Spielman said. "And that's been our history."

Harvin has emerged as perhaps the most versatile and dynamic player on the team. He earned respect in the locker room for his willingness to play through injuries and still produce late in last year's miserable 3-13 season. In May, Harvin showed up at voluntary workouts despite still recovering from shoulder surgery and spoke of asserting himself as a leader and encouraging other players to participate in the team's offseason program.

He caught 87 passes for 967 yards and six touchdowns last season, rushed for another 345 yards and two scores and also returned a kick for a touchdown during a sensational year.

Harvin dealt with migraine headaches and numerous other minor injuries as the result of his punishing style of play, missing one game his rookie season and two in 2010, which brought concerns about his durability over the long term.

He played in all 16 games last season, establishing himself as one of the game's top slot receivers and most dangerous kick returners.

"Percy is a phenomenal player on the field," Spielman said. "And you look at his statistics he had last year and how important he is to this franchise. He's a vital part of us moving forward with this team."

But somewhere between his appearance at team headquarters in May and his return to Minnesota this week, something went wrong for Harvin.

After making the NFC title game as a rookie, the Vikings have taken significant steps backward the last two seasons. They are centering their rebuild on Harvin, Peterson, who is recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee, and second-year quarterback Christian Ponder.

Harvin is far and away Ponder's best option in the receiver corps that includes non-descript veterans Jenkins and Devin Aromashodu, rookie fourth-round picks Jarius Wright and Greg Childs and Simpson, who will be suspended for the first three games this season after being arrested on drug charges while with the Cincinnati Bengals.

After signing tight end John Carlson from Seattle, there has been a lot of talk about the Vikings going to more two tight-end sets to take advantage of him and second-year tight end Kyle Rudolph. That could also be a concern for Harvin, but offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said he was unaware of any problems Harvin had with the playbook. Musgrave said he planned to get the ball to Harvin even more this season.

"We're looking forward to getting him on the field and as an offense we're looking forward to having a better year," Musgrave said. "That's the bottom line."

Peterson said he hadn't spoken to his friend about it but planned to have a conversation to try to help smooth things over.

"I wouldn't say it's distracting. It's more bothering. It's like, we definitely don't want to lose this guy. ... I'm sure the organization will do what it has to do to keep this guy around," Peterson said. "If it was me, I would make sure that we kept him around. But we'll see."

Frazier said the two sides have to get on the same page by the time the team reports to Mankato for camp on July 26.

"Hopefully, we'll be headed in the right direction when we get to training camp and everyone can focus on getting ready for the Jacksonville game," Frazier said. "That's the way it has to be. We can't afford any outside distractions."

Charles Tillman, Chicago Bears Cornerback, Rips Teacher Over Disrespectful Math Question

Chicago Bears cornerback Charles "Peanut" Tillman did not take kindly to learning that a Windy City-area girl's teacher was disrespecting his team in a math problem.

Tillman was recently supporting his Cornerstone Foundation at a sporting goods store. He received an autograph request from the daughter of the store's owner.

The teenager was doing her math homework at the time, and showed him one of the problems given to her by her teacher, John Amrein of Round Lake Middle School.

The problem did not sit well with Tillman.

Tillman

"The Packers play the Bears 4 times in two seasons. The Packers, being a much better team, have an 80% chance of winning each game," the question read.

Ouch. Given that assumption, "What is the probability that the Bears win all four games? What is the probability that the Bears win at least one game?"

Tillman did give the autograph to the girl, but he also wrote a note to the teacher in question, calling him out for bashing the team. He wrote:

Mr. Armein,

This is Charles "Peanut" Tillman of the Chicago Bears and I'm shocked that you would have a problem like this for your students.

The probability that the Bears would win in my opinion is 100%. Please do not and I repeat DO NOT send them home with math homework that is disrespectful to our team, city and our beloved Chicago Bears.

Your All Pro Corner

P.S. Bear Down

NOTE: The Packers have won seven of their last 10 vs. the Bears, including the last four in a row, so Mr. Amrein does have a point from an empirical standpoint.
