Bomb attacks kill 21 people in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Two bombings killed 21 people in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, just as Britain's prime minister was in the capital pledging to help to fight extremism.

In the deadlier of the two attacks, a car bomb exploded as a convoy of paramilitary troops passed through the outskirts of the northwest city of Peshawar, killing at least 17 people and wounding dozens of others, police said.

Most of the dead and wounded were civilians, although nine paramilitary Frontier Corps troops were hurt, said police official Shafiullah Khan. The blast struck one Frontier Corps vehicle, but the other passed by safely.

The explosion damaged many other vehicles and shops in the area, according to local TV video. Frontier Corps vehicles rushed to the scene, and a police officer collected evidence from the crater caused by the bomb.

Later in the day, a roadside bomb struck an army convoy and killed four soldiers in the North Waziristan tribal area, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country, said intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters. The blast also wounded 20 soldiers, the officials said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but suspicion will likely fall on the Pakistani Taliban. The group has been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for years that has killed thousands of security personnel and civilians. The militants have proven resilient despite a series of army offensives against them in the tribal region.

British Prime Minister David Cameron told his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif, that Britain would do all it can to help fight extremism, a battle that he said requires both a tough security response and measures to fight poverty and promote education.

Britain pledged to provide Pakistan more equipment to battle the kind of improvised explosives that killed the soldiers in North Waziristan and to share expertise in protecting sporting events. Britain hosted the Olympic Games last summer.

"The enemies of Pakistan are enemies of Britain, and we will stand together and conduct this fight against extremism and terrorism together," Cameron said at a joint news conference with Sharif in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

Cameron arrived in Pakistan following a visit to neighboring Afghanistan. He welcomed Pakistan's stated commitment to help promote a peace deal with the Afghan Taliban.

Pakistan is seen as key to any deal because of its historical links with the insurgents. Pakistan pushed the Taliban to carry through with its recent step to set up a political office in the Gulf country of Qatar, although acrimony between the insurgents and the Afghan government has hampered the negotiation process.

"I assure Prime Minister Cameron of our firm resolve to promote the shared objective of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan to which the 3 million Afghan refugees currently living in Pakistan can return with honor and dignity," Sharif said at the news conference.

Sharif has also pushed for peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban, although a series of attacks by the group since he took office in early June have led many to question that approach.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for shooting to death 10 foreign mountain climbers and a Pakistani guide in northern Pakistan a week ago, an attack the group said was retaliation for a U.S. drone strike that killed the Taliban's deputy leader.

The Taliban withdrew their offer of peace talks with the Pakistani government following the drone strike. The government continues to stick by its stance that negotiating with the group is the only way to bring peace.

Critics of talks point out that past peace deals eventually collapsed, offering the militants a chance to regroup. They also note that the Taliban reject Pakistan's democratic government and believe Islamic law should be applied throughout the country.

Facebook Saving Advertisers From NSFW Content - Business Insider

Last month, Facebook found itself in the throes of a PR crisis.

Advocacy groups were sick and tired of groups and pages dedicated to celebrating violence against women, and they found a way to get Facebook's attention: Show major advertisers that their ads were popping up next to images reading "don't wrap it and tap it, tape her and rape" or "next time don't get pregnant" over the picture of a woman crumpled at the bottom of a staircase.?

Once 15 companies, including Nationwide and Nissan, decided to temporarily pull ad dollars until there were policy changes, Facebook posted that it would take a more active stand against "controversial, harmful and hateful speech on Facebook."

Friday, the company released a new review policy for pages and groups that will protect users (and advertisers) from inappropriate content.

"We know that marketers work hard to promote their brands, and we take their objectives seriously," Facebook's new policy states: "While we already have rigorous review and removal policies for content against our terms, we recognize we need to do more to prevent situations where ads are displayed alongside controversial Pages and Groups. So we are taking action."

Starting Monday, Facebook will review pages and groups to see if they're appropriate for advertisers. If the page has violent, graphic, or sexual content, then it will be ad restricted, and ads will be removed a few days later.

The new ad-restricted content is more expansive than prior policies that barred racist or homophobic hate speech, for example. "Pages that are suggestive of violence or animal cruelty will be ad-restricted under the new policy, for example, as well as ones that are sexually explicit, even if they don't portray violent scenarios," Ad Age reports.

Furthermore, Facebook adds,?"Prior to this change, a Page selling adult products was eligible to have ads appear on its right-hand side; now there will not be ads displayed next to this type of content."

While the review process will first be done manually, Facebook hopes that in the coming weeks, the process will become scalable and, thus, automated.

Engadget + gdgt NYC wrap-up

Image

Well, that's fun. We've wrapped up Engadget and gdgt's first-ever combined New York City event, and boy howdy did we have a heck of a night. A whole bunch of readers braved the heatwave to queue up hours in advance, forming a line that snaked around the block. When the doors opened, they were greeted with gear-packed event space, including lounges from Sony and Samsung and booths from companies like Toshiba, Qualcomm, Nokia and Sling, plus some smaller outfits like our first-ever Insert Coin winner, Ziphius.

The event also featured panels throughout the night, including conversations with Samsung Mobile VP Nick DiCarlo and Sony Electronics senior manager, Ray Hartjen, plus a roundtable discussion on the state of the industry featuring Jordan Crook from TechCrunch, Kevin Tofel from GigaOm and Harry McCracken from Time. IK Multimedia closed things out with performances by prog band Sound of Contact and Living Color leader Vernon Reid. All in all, not a bad night, if we do say so ourselves. We can't wait to do it again!

The Man With A 'Battery Operated Brain'

He calls himself the "human with the battery operated brain" because he does, in fact, have electrodes in his head, put there by his New Zealand doctors.

Andrew Johnson (also known as "Cyber AJ") a few months ago was a young, 39 year old, early-onset Parkinsonian who tremored constantly. His hands shook. His neck crimped. His body was stiff. He had balance problems, voice problems, trouble speaking. He can make those problems disappear now by hitting a switch. It's amazing to see. This video begins with him looking totally normal; he talks a bit, then, when he's ready, he pushes the "off" button, and the disease comes roaring back. Instantly.

This procedure, called "deep brain stimulation" is now used all over the world. When neurons in the brain start firing in ways that cause shakes and tics, it is sometimes possible, says neurosurgeon Andres Lozano, to control those tics by adding or subtracting electricity.

So what we've been able to do is to pinpoint where these disturbances are in the brain and we've been able to intervene within the circuits in the brain ... We do that with electricity. We use electricity to dictate how they fire and we try to block their behavior using electricity.

Over the years, these implants can pinpoint the errant neurons with increasing accuracy adding or subtracting electricity as needed. In Andrew's case, the implants turned him from a "39 year old trapped in an 89 year old body" to what passes for normal guy ? at least when the current is on. As he says on his blog, youngandshaky.com, the surgery went fast.

I only had a small patch of hair removed from my head and chest and the wires pulled down and plugged into the neuro-stimulator which was implanted in my chest. Straight after the surgery I was in obscene amounts of pain (in my head) but double the normal dose of morphine soon put paid to that. While I was in recovery (incidentally longer than the time it took to do the surgery) there were lots of people milling around talking and getting ready to go to lunch etc. I am sure they were talking quietly but to me the slightest whisper was like a dagger to the skull and I remember thinking they better be quiet soon or I was going to get out of that bed and make them. That's if moving without falling to the floor in a crumpled heap was a possibility. The effects of the morphine soon kicked in and I started to feel halfway human again, albeit now a human with a battery operated brain. Cyber-AJ on the loose!

A few days later, after the staff had adjusted his monitor to compensate for his brain dysfunction, so that his body could move without shaking, (those settings will change; Parkinson's is a progressive disease), Andrew Johnson was released.

[T]he effects of being powered up are almost instantaneous. I have required several tweaks and medication adjustments but that is to be expected. I do feel a great deal better, certainly not to the point I was pre-Parkinson's but 100% better than I have felt in recent years. So from that perspective it has been a dream come true as I explained to a good friend Andy McDowell who came to visit me in hospital.

Andy McDowell also has Parkinson's, and he's written a poem about it to explain the disease to his children. "The only positive thing about this [expletive deleted] disease is meeting fantastic people like Andy and his wife Kate," says AJ. Here's the poem, "Smaller, A Poem About Parkinson's Disease", read by Andy's daughter Lily.

Thanks to blogger Jason Kottke for pointing me to AJ's story.

These Astonishing Vietnam War Firefight Photos Look Like Laser Hell

When James Speed Hensinger was 22, he'd already spent nine months fighting in Vietnam, spending his nights in perpetual fear of snipers hiding in the mountains above. So come April of 1970, after fielding multiple nighttime attacks from a single sniper and his AK47, the 173rd Airborne Brigade?of which Hensinger was a part?decided to hit back with an arsenal of insane proportions.

With nothing but a 35 mm Nikon FTN camera and a few sandbags in place of a tripod, Hensinger captured long exposure shots of the astonishing attack: rounds from 7.62mm M60 machine guns sped from both sides while an M42 Duster open turret tank shot 40mm anti-aircraft guns down the center, all topped off with high explosive shells shot from an M2 Browing .5 caliber machine gun. And all this for a single, Viet Cong fighter who never stood a chance.

Describing the grim aftermath, Hensinger says:

We sent out patrols during the day, and found a blood trail one morning. Otherwise, we never found him.

With a firestorm of such epic proportions, it's no surprise that all we have left are these astonishing and telling images of a war no one stood a chance of winning. [The Independent via My Modern Met]

Targeted viral therapy destroys breast cancer stem cells in preclinical experiments

June 24, 2013 ? A promising new treatment for breast cancer being developed at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center and the VCU Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM) has been shown in cell culture and in animal models to selectively kill cancer stem cells at the original tumor site and in distant metastases with no toxic effects on healthy cells, including normal stem cells. Cancer stem cells are critical to a cancer's ability to recur following conventional chemotherapies and radiation therapy because they can quickly multiply and establish new tumors that are often therapy resistant.

The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, focuses on a gene originally cloned in the laboratory of primary investigator Paul B. Fisher, M.Ph., Ph.D. The gene, melanoma differentiation associated gene-7 (mda-7), also known as interleukin (IL)-24, has been shown to directly impact two forms of cell suicide known as apoptosis and toxic autophagy, regulate the development of new blood vessels and also play a role in promoting cancer cell destruction by the immune system. In the present study, the researchers used a recombinant adenovirus vector, an engineered virus with modified genetic material, known as Ad.mda-7 to deliver the mda-7/IL-24 gene with its encoded protein directly to the tumor.

"Therapy with the mda-7/IL-24 gene has been shown to be safe in a phase I clinical trial involving patients with advanced cancers, and prior studies in my laboratory and with collaborators have shown that the gene could also be effective against breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, ovarian, pancreatic and brain cancers," says Fisher, Thelma Newmeyer Corman Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and co-leader of the Cancer Molecular Genetics program at VCU Massey, chairman of VCU School of Medicine's Department of Human and Molecular Genetics and director of the VCU Institute of Molecular Medicine. "Our study demonstrates that this therapy may someday be an effective way to eradicate both early and advanced stage breast cancer, and could even be used to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence."

The researchers found that infection of human breast cancer cells with the adenovirus decreased the proliferation of breast cancer stem cells without affecting normal breast stem cells. It was also shown to induce a stress response in the cells that led to apoptosis by disrupting Wnt/B-catenin signaling, a process cells rely upon to transmit signals that initiate biological functions critical to survival. In mouse models, the therapy profoundly inhibited the growth of tumors generated from breast cancer stem cells and also killed cancer cells in distant, uninjected tumors.

Since discovering the mda-7/IL-24 gene, Fisher and his team have worked to develop better ways to deliver it to cancer cells, including two cancer "terminator" viruses known as Ad.5-CTV and Ad.5/3-CTV. Cancer terminator viruses are unique because they are designed to replicate only within cancer cells while delivering immune-modulating and toxic genes such as MDA-7/IL-24. Coupled with a novel stealth delivery technique known as ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD), researchers can now systemically deliver viruses and therapeutic genes and proteins directly to tumors and their surrounding tissue (microenvironment) at both primary and metastatic tumor sites. UTMD uses microscopic, gas-filled bubbles that can be paired with viral therapies, therapeutic genes and proteins, and imaging agents and can then be released in a site and target-specific manner via ultrasound. Fisher and his colleagues are pioneering this approach and have already reported success in experiments utilizing UTMD technology and mda-7/IL-24 gene therapy in prostate and colorectal cancer models.

"We are hopeful that this targeted gene therapy could be safely combined with conventional chemotherapies to significantly improve outcomes for patients with breast cancer and potentially a variety of other cancers," says Fisher. "When paired with promising new delivery techniques such as UTMD, physicians may one day be able to better target site-specific cancers and also monitor the effectiveness of these types of therapies in real time."

'Family Ties' creator Gary David Goldberg dies

NEW YORK (AP) ? Gary David Goldberg, who created the 1980s sitcom hit "Family Ties" and expanded into feature films, has died.

Goldberg died of brain cancer in Montecito, Calif., on Saturday, days before his 69th birthday, The New York Times reported.

Goldberg's TV successes also included the ABC comedy "Spin City," which in 1996 reunited him with "Family Ties" breakout star Michael J. Fox as the deputy mayor of New York City.

"With a full heart I say goodbye to my mentor, benefactor, partner, second father and beloved friend," Fox said in a statement on Monday. "He touched so many with his enormous talent and generous spirit. He changed my life profoundly."

A more modest hit for Goldberg yet much-acclaimed, CBS' "Brooklyn Bridge" (1991-93) was a tender comedy based on his experiences growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y. Marion Ross starred as a character inspired by his grandmother.

Goldberg's films included "Dad" (1989), starring Jack Lemmon and Ted Danson, as well as "Bye Bye Love" (1995) and "Must Love Dogs" (2005), which he wrote as well as directed.

His own dog, Ubu, contributed the name of his production company and was widely known from the onscreen credit where viewers heard the command, "Sit, Ubu, sit," then a bark.

Goldberg began his TV career in the 1970s as a writer for series including "The Bob Newhart Show," and was a producer of "Lou Grant."

In 1982 "Family Ties" premiered on NBC, introducing Michael J. Fox as a business-loving Young Republican son of left-wing baby boomers who were former hippies.

"Basically, those parents are me and Diana," Goldberg once said, referring to his wife, Diana Meehan, who survives him.

The series became a huge hit, making Fox a star and Goldberg an important behind-the-camera name.

During his career, Goldberg won two Emmy awards, two Golden Globes and a Peabody award.

Kane is the man of the (late) hour for Blackhawks

BOSTON (AP) ? Patrick Kane already has one Stanley Cup-winning goal from 2010 along with the one that put the Chicago Blackhawks back into the finals this year.

Can he imagine a second NHL title-clincher?

"I think the stars would have to be aligned right for it to happen like that again," Kane said Sunday, a day before the Blackhawks will take the ice in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final with a chance to win their second championship in four seasons.

"I think the biggest thing is trying to help contribute any way I can, help this team get a win, especially the situation we're in," said Kane, who scored the winner in Game 6 against Philadelphia in the '10 finals, and the one that eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in this year's Western Conference finals. "I'll do whatever I can to help the team win, and it would be a great feeling."

The Blackhawks will take a 3-2 lead into Game 6 against the Boston Bruins on Monday night, and Kane is a big reason why. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft had two goals in Chicago's 3-1 victory in Game 5, giving him seven goals in his last seven games, including two winners.

"That's the type of player he is," Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said. "When it comes down to the wire and tight games, big games, that's when he wants the puck. That's when he wants to score the goals, the big goals.

"It's huge to have those kind of players in your team when you go far in the playoffs. And now when it's really coming down to the wire here, (it) gives the whole group confidence that you have players like that. It's not a coincidence that he has a lot of big goals so far in his career."

Actually, Kane has a lot of small goals, too.

In addition to the nine times he's scored in 22 playoff games this postseason, Kane led the Blackhawks in scoring in the lockout-shortened regular season with 55 points in 48 games ? including 23 goals that tied for the team lead.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville split Kane and Jonathan Toews at the start of the finals so that Bruins counterpart Claude Julien wouldn't be able to match defenseman Zdeno Chara with both of the Blackhawks' top forwards. But they responded with no goals in the first three games, and Quenneville put them back together for Game 4.

Since then, they have combined for four goals and seven points. Kane's 19 points in the playoffs lead Chicago and are second in the NHL; he also led the Blackhawks with eight points in the six-game victory over Philadelphia in the 2010 finals.

"It's like we always say: I don't care who scores for us; I don't care who's on the ice for them," Quenneville said. "We expect somebody has got to score for us, and we're not choosy in that department."

(AP) ? Admitted leaker Edward Snowden circled the globe in evasion of U.S. authorities on Sunday, seeking asylum in Ecuador and leaving the Obama administration scrambling to determine its next step in what became a game of diplomatic cat-and-mouse.

The former National Security Agency contractor and CIA technician fled Hong Kong and arrived at the Moscow airport, where he planned to spend the night before boarding an Aeroflot flight to Cuba. Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said his government received an asylum request from Snowden, and the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said they would help him.

"He goes to the very countries that have, at best, very tense relationships with the United States and do not value press freedoms whatsoever," said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., adding that she feared Snowden would trade more U.S. secrets for asylum.

"This is not going to play out well for the national security interests of the United States," she added.

The move left the U.S. with limited options as Snowden's itinerary took him on a tour of what many see as anti-American capitals. Ecuador in particular has rejected the United States' previous efforts at cooperation, and has been helping WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, avoid prosecution by allowing him to stay at its embassy in London.

Snowden helped The Guardian and The Washington Post disclose U.S. surveillance programs that collects vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, but often sweeping up information on American citizens. Officials have the ability to collect phone and Internet information broadly but need a warrant to examine specific cases where they believe terrorism is involved.

Snowden has been in hiding for several weeks in Hong Kong, a former British colony with a high degree of autonomy from mainland China. The United States formally sought Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong but was rebuffed; Hong Kong officials said the U.S. request did not fully comply with their laws.

In a statement, the Justice Department said it would "continue to discuss this matter with Hong Kong and pursue relevant law enforcement cooperation with other countries where Mr. Snowden may be attempting to travel."

A State Department official said the United States was in touch through diplomatic and law enforcement channels with countries that Snowden could travel through or to, reminding them that Snowden is wanted on criminal charges and reiterating Washington's position that Snowden should only be permitted to travel back to the U.S.

The White House would only say that President Barack Obama had been briefed on the developments by his national security advisers.

Russia's state ITAR-Tass news agency and Interfax cited an unnamed Aeroflot airline official as saying Snowden was on the plane that landed Sunday afternoon in Moscow. The report said he intended to fly to Cuba on Monday and then on to Caracas, Venezuela.

U.S. lawmakers scoffed, and warned that all countries helping Snowden to evade trial were hurting their relationship with the U.S.

"The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela, so I hope we'll chase him to the ends of the earth, bring him to justice and let the Russians know there'll be consequences if they harbor this guy," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

Upon his arrival, Snowden did not leave Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. One explanation could be that he wasn't allowed; a U.S. official said Snowden's passport had been revoked, and that special permission from Russian authorities would have been needed.

"It's almost hopeless unless we find some ways to lean on them," said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.

With each suspected flight, efforts to secure Snowden's return to the United States appeared more complicated if not impossible. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, but does with Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Even with an extradition agreement though, any country could give Snowden a political exemption.

"As we have seen of late, I think 10 percent of Snowden's issues are now legal, and 90 percent political," said Douglas McNabb, an expert in international extradition and a senior principle at international criminal defense firm McNabb Associates.

The likelihood that any of these countries would stop Snowden from traveling on to Ecuador seemed unlikely. While diplomatic tensions have thawed in recent years, Cuba and the United States are hardly allies after a half century of distrust.

Venezuela, too, could prove difficult. Former President Hugo Chavez was a sworn enemy of the United States and his successor, Nicolas Maduro, earlier this year called Obama "grand chief of devils." The two countries do not exchange ambassadors.

U.S. pressure on Caracas also might be problematic given its energy exports. The U.S. Energy Information Agency reports Venezuela sent the United States 900,000 barrels of crude oil each day in 2012, making it the fourth-largest foreign source of U.S. oil.

Assange's lawyer, Michael Ratner, said Snowden's options aren't numerous though.

"You have to have a country that's going to stand up to the United States," Ratner said. "You're not talking about a huge range of countries here."

That is perhaps why Snowden first stopped in Russia, a nation with complicated relations with Washington. U.S. lawmakers warned those relations would grow more perilous if Moscow does not cooperate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is "aiding and abetting Snowden's escape," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

"Allies are supposed to treat each other in decent ways, and Putin always seems almost eager to put a finger in the eye of the United States," Schumer said. "That's not how allies should treat one another, and I think it will have serious consequences for the United States-Russia relationship."

It also wasn't clear Snowden was finished with disclosing highly classified information.

"I am very worried about what else he has," said Rep. Loretta Sanchez, a California Democrat who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said she had been told Snowden had perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents.

Ros-Lehtinen and King spoke with CNN. Graham spoke to "Fox News Sunday." Schumer was on CNN's "State of the Union." Sanchez appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press." Feinstein was on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Ruins of big Maya city discovered in remote jungle

National Institute of Anthropology and History

Archaeologist Ivan Sprajc led an international team of experts to study the Maya site.

By Megan Gannon
LiveScience

An entire Maya city full of pyramids and palatial complexes has been discovered in a remote jungle in southeastern Mexico, archaeologists report.

Covered in thick vegetation, the ruins were found in Campeche, a province in the western Yucat?n peninsula that's littered with Maya complexes and artifacts. The newfound site is dubbed Chact?n, and it stretches over roughly 54 acres (22 hectares). Researchers think the city was occupied during the Late Classic Maya period, from roughly A.D. 600 until A.D. 900, when the civilization mysteriously collapsed.

"It is one of the largest sites in the Central Lowlands, comparable in its extent and the magnitude of its buildings with Becan, Nadzcaan and El Palmar in Campeche," archaeologist Ivan Sprajc said in a statement from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

In the sprawling Maya city, Sprajc and his team found three monumental complexes with the remains of pyramids ? one 75 feet (23 meters) high ? as well as ball courts, plazas, homes, altars, bits of painted stucco and stone slabs known as stele. Epigraphers are still poring over inscriptions at Chact?n, but one stele refers to an apparent ruler named K'inich B'ahlam, the researchers say.

National Institute of Anthropology and History

This image is from the southeast complex at the newfound Maya city being called Chact?n.

Traces of the lost city were first spotted in aerial images of a vast forested area, which previously had only been explored by loggers and rubber-tappers and was considered "a total blank" in the map of Maya sites, Sprajc said.

"With aerial photographs examined stereoscopically, we found many features that were obviously architectural remains," Sprajc explained in a statement from INAH. "From there we took the coordinates and the next step was to locate the ancient alleys used by tappers and loggers to reach the area."

Sprajc and his team could only get to the site by traveling through the jungle in a truck with four-wheel drive, stopping every now and then to hack vegetation blocking their path with a machete.

Archaeologists hope studying Chact?n will shed light on its connection to other nearby Maya cities, according to INAH.

Compound enhances SSRI antidepressant's effects in mice

June 21, 2013 ? A synthetic compound is able to turn off "secondary" vacuum cleaners in the brain that take up serotonin, resulting in the "happy" chemical being more plentiful, scientists from the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio have discovered. Their study, released June 18 by The Journal of Neuroscience, points to novel targets to treat depression.

Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that carries chemical signals, is associated with feelings of wellness. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed antidepressants that block a specific "vacuum cleaner" for serotonin (the serotonin transporter, or SERT) from taking up serotonin, resulting in more supply of the neurotransmitter in circulation in the extracellular fluid of the brain.

Delicate balance

"Serotonin is released by neurons in the brain," said Lyn Daws, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology in the School of Medicine. "Too much or too little may be a bad thing. It is thought that having too little serotonin is linked to depression. That's why we think Prozac-type drugs (SSRIs) work, by stopping the serotonin transporter from taking up serotonin from extracellular fluid in the brain."

A problem with SSRIs is that many depressed patients experience modest or no therapeutic benefit. It turns out that, while SSRIs block the activity of the serotonin transporter, they don't block other "vacuum cleaners." "Until now we did not appreciate the presence of backup cleaners for serotonin," Dr. Daws said. "We were not the first to show their presence in the brain, but we were among the first show that they were limiting the ability of the SSRIs to increase serotonin signaling in the brain. The study described in this new paper is the first demonstration of enhancing the antidepressant-like effect of an SSRI by concurrently blocking these backup vacuum cleaners."

Serotonin ceiling

Even if SERT activity is blocked, the backup vacuum cleaners (called organic cation transporters) keep a ceiling on how high the serotonin levels can rise, which likely limits the optimal therapeutic benefit to the patient, Dr. Daws said.

"Right now, the compound we have, decynium-22, is not an agent that we want to give to people in clinical trials," she said. "We are not there yet. Where we are is being able to use this compound to identify new targets in the brain for antidepressant activity and to turn to medicinal chemists to design molecules to block these secondary vacuum cleaners."

'Project Runway' season 12 changes: more Tim Gunn, added Fan Interaction

By Tim Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Tim Gunn is going to have more time - and power - to make it work on the upcoming season of "Project Runway."

The Lifetime reality show has tinkered with its format for its 12th season, which premieres July 18. More screen time for the longstanding "Runway" mentor Gunn is part of the new formula.

Gunn will join the judges -- Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia and Zac Posen - during the runway show to answer questions that the judges have about what occurred in the workroom and give them the opportunity to physically examine the craftsmanship of each design.

Gunn's expanded role will also include the power to "rescue" one designer if he feels the contestant deserves a second chance.

A new feature dubbed Runway Redemption will allow fans to vote online for a past contestant to return, while the Project Runway Superfan Contest will choose seven fans via video submission to appear on "Project Runway" for a fashion makeover.

Also for the first time, fans will be able to interact with other viewers in real time during the episodes via a new interactive onscreen feature dubbed PlayRunway.

Guest judges for the upcoming season include Kate Bosworth, "Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco, Kelly Osbourne and Sigourney Weaver.

Whether it is because they support Mr. Snowden?s free-speech and privacy agendas, or because they are upset by his claims that the US National Security Agency has been hacking into Hong Kong?s computer network, 49.9 percent of people asked in a poll published here?Sunday?said he should not be surrendered. Another 17.6 percent said he should be turned over. A third of respondents had not made up their minds.

?Nobody welcomes a fugitive, but now he is here we have to safeguard his rights,? said Freddy Chu, a young privacy activist, as he brandished a photo of Snowden at a small rally in support of the American in central Hong Kong?on Saturday.

Snowden is believed to be in hiding somewhere in Hong Kong, from where he divulged his identity to The Guardian newspaper a week ago. Since then, in an interview with the South China Morning Post, he has accused the NSA of hacking into the backbone of Hong Kong?s Internet system.?

?He is welcome to Hong Kong,? said another demonstrator, James Hon, as he helped hold up a banner belonging to the League in Defense of Hong Kong?s Freedoms. ?He is upholding our core values ? freedom of expression and privacy. He is a brother.??

Snowden?s presence here puts the former British colony in a difficult spot, potentially subject to pressure from both Washington and Beijing. For the time being, the United States has not lodged an extradition request and Chinese officials have not tipped their hand about what they think should happen to Snowden. But many Hong Kongers are uncomfortable.?

That may explain the low turnout at Saturday?s demonstration outside the US consulate. Persistent rain did not help, but few people here see Snowden?s fate as very important to their own lives.?

Still, his suggestions that the NSA has been hacking in Hong Kong have won him a measure of sympathy. ?When we learned that they had hacked into our Internet hub at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, all of us with a computer felt we had been targeted,? said Yves Azemar, a French expatriate dealer in rare books.?

Snowden?s presence here also draws international attention to Hong Kong?s unique status as a ?special administrative region? of China, where the rules are very different from the mainland.?

?This is a golden opportunity for Hong Kong to explain to the world ? that we still enjoy judicial autonomy,? says Alan Leong, a legislator and head of the pro-democracy Civic Party. ?It?s a chance to say how proud we are that Snowden chose Hong Kong as a refuge.??

Homebrew Camera Mod Mimics LANDSAT Satellite

An anonymous reader writes "These folks at Public Lab have published instructions to hack a conventional camera to do photosynthesis photography, just like NASA's LANDSAT satellite. What better way to introduce your kids to space technologies and learn more about the environment? Measure the health of your garden, all with a simple filter switch and some post-processing. It's thoroughly documented at http://publiclab.org/wiki/near-infrared-camera, and you can do it to a variety of cameras." (And here's a link to the related ? and fully funded ? kickstarter project.)

LIDAR reveals ancient city remnants beneath Cambodian jungle

LIDAR reveals ancient city beneath Cambodian jungle

LIDAR scanning has recently become cost-effective enough for archaeologists to use on large historical sites, and they're taking full advantage. A helicopter sojourn last year has revealed a massive urban site below the jungles near Angkor Wat in Cambodia that likely housed thousands of people. New canals, temples and other man-made structures were discovered during a two-day scan, which emitted up to 200,000 laser pulses per second and would have taken years if done by traditional excavation methods. The technique can scope out features as small as a footprint, and is also being used in cities around the Egyption pyramids and other archaeologically interesting regions -- marking another way that Indy-style archeologists are becoming obsolete.

9 Reasons the Right Realtor Makes all the Difference when ...

We often spend too much time searching for the right home, and not nearly enough time choosing the right estate agent. However, the right agent can make the process quicker, easier, and could even help you score a much better home for a lower price. So, before hitting the streets in search of the perfect house, take some time to select the right estate agent for the task ahead.

1. The Right Agent Will Know About Unadvertised Properties

Top agents constantly have their fingers on the pulse of the markets they serve. This means they know about properties the second a seller decides to put it on the market, and you can get the first look and first chance to bid on interesting finds. A good estate agent has solid leads in the market, and is on good terms with everyone in the local property circles.

She?s also likely to know if the seller is willing to take significantly less than the asking price, and why. Often, knowing why a seller is willing to take less is as important as knowing what they?re willing to accept.

2. The Right Agent Will Know the Area

If you?re shopping for?houses in London, it won?t do you much good to hire an estate agent who specializes in properties in Birmingham. While a few agents may have knowledge of more than one area, the best ones become experts in a single geographic location.

They?ll know everything about the schools, religious institutions, shopping venues, entertainment options, and social climate of the area where the work. Get an agent who?s intimate with your desired area.

3. The Right Agent Will Keep You from Getting Emotional

Home buying is a long process, and lots of difficult decisions are involved. Even the most stable home buyer tends to get frustrated or become overly anxious about a home or a price. The solid real estate agent will keep buyers on an even keel, preventing their emotions from clouding their good decision-making. They won?t allow you to jump into a questionable deal, or storm away from a potential great deal.

4. The Right Agent is a Good Negotiator

Once you find the perfect home, the work isn?t over. That?s when the real task begins. A good agent is also a superb negotiator. Not only will she help you bargain for the best possible price, she?ll also be able to get you extra perks, such as reduced closing costs, an insurance policy on the purchase, have those loose steps mended before the sell, or get the seller to toss in the playground equipment that?s sitting in the backyard.

5. The Right Agent Will Represent You, Not the Seller

The best agents work with either the buyer or the seller ? not both. It?s impossible for an agent to work in the best interest of both parties at the same time, because the best deal for the seller isn?t the same thing as the best deal for the buyer.

For this reason, it pays to work with an independent buyer?s agent who has no involvement with the seller. Most of the time, the two agents split the four to six percent commission on the sale, so you don?t pay more just because two agents are involved in the transaction.

6. The Right Agent Fits Your Personality

It sounds trite, but since you?ll likely be working closely with the agent for several weeks or months, you?ll need one you click with. If the agent irritates you, it?s only going to make the entire process more difficult than necessary. Even if the agent has a stellar record and recommendations, make sure he?s someone you can get along with easily during the process. There are too many agents available to force yourself to work with one you can?t get along with.

7. The Right Agent Will Listen to What You Want

Have you ever explained to an agent how important it is to have three bedrooms, a porch, and a large bathroom, only to have them escort you to a two-bedroom unit with no deck and a miniature bath? It?s annoying. The right agent will sit down with you and get a complete wish list for your new home. He?ll ask you what is negotiable and what?s absolutely necessary. Then, he will only show you homes that meet your criteria.

8. The Right Agent Will Get the Proper Home Inspections

Many problems, such as foundation issues, roof problems, plumbing, and electrical issues aren?t easy for home buyers to spot. It takes a trained and experienced inspector to seek out and identify things that could cost you time and money down the line. The best agents go the extra mile to assure problems are identified and addressed before the purchase is made final.

9. The Right Agent Will Be Patient

If your agent is rushing your decision, trying to force you to buy a home you?re not happy with, or isn?t doing his best to negotiate you a good deal, you?re using the wrong one. A good agent takes all the time necessary to find the right location, select the best home within that area, work to get the right price for it, and make sure all the loose ends are tied up in time. Never settle for an agent who rushes your home buying decisions.

Follow these steps to make sure your estate agent is right for you:

  • Ask for references or referrals
  • Interview the agent before making a decision
  • Chat with her long enough to get a sense of her personality
  • Choose one with knowledge of the area where you?re interested
  • Ask lots of questions about their experience in the area where you?re home shopping

A lengthy interview process is easier in the long run than choosing the wrong agent and having a bad home buying experience. Home ownership is one of the most exciting things one can do, so get a great agent to help you make this a memorable process, not a difficult process.

In Detroit, a front-runner for mayor self-destructs

Mike Duggan has dropped out of the race for Detroit mayor, a day after the Michigan Court of Appeals removed him from the ballot.

A stocky white guy from Livonia, Duggan moved his family to Detroit last year so he? could run.

But now, he'll likely be remembered as the guy who couldn't wait just two weeks.

"I am the first candidate I've ever heard of to be knocked off the ballot for filing petitions too ?early," he said.?

"I am the first candidate I've ever heard of to be knocked off the ballot for filing petitions too early."

Duggan filed his campaign signatures on April 2.

But he was two weeks shy of a very important date: April 16. That's the day he would have been an official Detroit resident for one full year.

That one-year minimum is a requirement for candidates, according to the city's charter.

But the city clerk told Duggan it was fine to file early. And he'd been getting form letters from the election commission asking candidates to turn in petitions as early as possible.

Still, two courts have now ruled against letting Duggan on the ballot.

And he admits the screw-up is ultimately his fault ... sort of:

"The courts in this state don't give sufficient weight to voters being allowed to decide things for?themselves," Duggan said at today's press conference to announce he would drop his mayoral bid. "But I knew those things. And I only blame myself. I should have not given them any chance."

Duggan's supporters - and even the Detroit Free Press Editorial board - say this was a bad move on the courts' part.

They say it's far more important to give voters as much choice as possible, rather than kick Duggan out of the race on a technicality.

"Elections shouldn't be decided in the court room,? says Jonathan Kinloch, who backed Duggan for mayor.

?If there are any issues that are technical or minor, that should have been decided by the voters."

But critics say Duggan just plain blew it.

"If you can't get something as simple as this done correctly, you don't deserve a chance to be mayor."

"The one big ace that he had to play supposedly was he was a Mr. Fix-it who could come into?Detroit and get the job done," said?Inside Michigan Politics editor Bill Ballenger. "And this incident makes it look like, hey buster, if you can't get something as simple as this done correctly, you don't deserve a chance to be mayor." ??

But with an emergency manager running the city, does it even matter who's mayor?

"Not until Kevyn Orr's gone,? said?Duggan.?"I believed I could get the emergency manager out earlier. And I believe they're gonna have a hard time getting the emergency manager out. Had I been there, I believe I could have moved the emergency manager out earlier. But maybe I'll be wrong, and maybe it'll be fine."

With Duggan gone, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon is the front-runner.

Duggan says he?ll eventually decide which candidate to endorse.?
