Eagan: Tom Brady should follow coach?s lead

When a man is murdered ? and your superstar tight end is charged with the killing ? business as ?usual is out the window.

Bill Belichick showed he understood that yesterday. The coach who?s become a caricature of brusque, monosyllabic obnoxiousness spoke with what seemed like genuine pain and sadness.

?A young man lost his life and his family suffered a tragic loss and there?s no way to understand that,? he told reporters.

Today, Tom Brady will be on the firing line in Foxboro.

In his only statement so far on the slaying of Odin Lloyd and the arrest of Aaron Hernandez, Brady told Sports Illustrated?s Peter King, ?I?m focusing on the great teammates I have who are committed to helping us win games. The only thing I care about is winning. Nothing is going to ever get in the way of that goal.?

The superstar quarterback said he?s ?moved on? from the Hernandez mess.

Well, he can?t.

Not yet.

When Brady and his fellow team captains face the media today ? the first time they?ll be pressed on the Hernandez case ? they should follow Belichick?s lead. Forget football. Forget who?ll replace Hernandez in the team?s quest for another Super Bowl championship.

Hernandez is under investigation not just for one murder, but three. And in new court documents, Hernandez?s friend Carlos Ortiz ? arrested, too, in connection with Lloyd?s murder ? said Hernandez?s Franklin ?flop house? was a favorite stomping ground for other football players.

The line to date is that Hernandez did not socialize with other Patriots. So were those football players Hernandez?s teammates from high school or college? Semi-pro players from Lloyd?s Boston team? Or a Patriot player, or two, who have since distanced themselves from the man now under investigation for the murder of two young Cape Verdeans last year in Boston?s South End?

These are questions that are likely to be fired at Brady and his fellow Patriots captains this morning.

I hope Tom Brady ? known as much for his nice-guy charm as Belichick is for his glum demeanor ? figures out that the football boilerplate he gave to Peter King won?t cut it at today?s press conference.

Surprisingly, unexpectedly, defying nearly all prognosticators, the sour and sullen Bill Belichick set the bar for leadership yesterday.

Tom Brady needs to meet it.

Joe Biden Aims to Kick Start U.S-India Relationship During Overseas Trip

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden exchanges greetings with museum director Manimala during a visit to the Mahatma Gandhi museum Monday in New Delhi, India.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden exchanges greetings with museum director Manimala during a visit to the Mahatma Gandhi museum Monday in New Delhi, India.

Vice President Joe Biden, who hopes to kick start the U.S.-India economic and political relationship during his current weeklong trip to the region, met with Indian business leaders and delivered a lengthy speech at the Bombay Stock Exchange in Mumbai Wednesday.

[READ:?Joe Biden Open to Presidential Bid in 2016]

Biden's goals are not to return with any formal agreements from India, but rather re-open the dialogue with a country whose economy is on the rise and whose strategic ties are critical to building U.S. stature in the region, experts say.

"India is no longer an economic island, it's a rising economic power; imagine what our two countries can achieve together in this 21st century, not only for one another but for economic stability of the region, as well as the world," Biden said during his speech in Mumbai. "There's no reason if our countries make the right choices that we can't grow together and more rapidly."

Robert Hathaway, director of the Asia Program at the Wilson Center, says Biden's trip comes at a critical time between the two countries, particularly as the Obama administration hopes to refocus its international attention to Asia.

"In the bilateral relationship, there's a sense that it's sort of stagnant right now; there's even a sense of disappointment on both sides, but particularly on the U.S. side that it really has not progressed in recent years," he says. "Part of this trip is simply to remind the Indians that we are still interested in them and moreover we're still interested in them really becoming a larger and more important player on the global scene on issues from everything from climate change to international trade rules to a larger security role in the Asia-Pacific."

Biden cited both trade and climate change as areas the two countries could do more to collaborate on.

[READ: Biden Will Focus on Trade Security on India Trip]

"It seems to me there are certain basic principles in the way forward that are clear: a trade and investment partnership that is open and fair [and] a security partnership of first resort where we look instinctively to each other to help the Asia-Pacific region to rise," he said.

But Biden also acknowledged both sides would have to be willing to give a little in order to thaw the current relationship.

"There remains a gap between what we are doing and what we are capable of," Biden said.

Hathaway says some of the roadblocks Biden refers to include investment barriers and economic grievances.

"They feel that we have placed barriers to their software engineers and their IT professionals from working in America so visas are really a big issue in this bilateral relationship," he says. "They worry about us inappropriately protecting our intellectual property so that it handicaps particularly their pharmaceutical industry."

[WORLD REPORT:?Obama Should Build Ties Between U.S. and India]

In remarks following a business roundtable at the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, Biden acknowledged the Indian concerns.

"There was an honest discussion about how both governments could be productive in reducing trade barriers that have an impact on trade and commerce," he said according to a pool report. "We mean what we say when we say that the relationship between India and the U.S. has unlimited potential and there is no reason why trade, commerce and intercourse between our countries can't increase exponentially over time."

Teresita Schaffer, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's India Project, says Biden's trip is an important step in a process that needs to be viewed in a larger temporal context.

"If you look at the recent figures, while trade has continued to grow, U.S. investment in India has not been particularly high the past couple of years, Indian investment in the United States has continued to grow," she says. "It is my understanding that Biden did not arrive with a briefcase full of very specific policy asks. That list exists ? in fact one of the depressing things is that list has not changed a great deal in the past decade."

Hollywood studios' message to executives: embrace digital or die

By Lucas Shaw

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - When Paramount announced Monday that Amy Powell would run its new TV division, it sent a message to the rest of Hollywood: Embrace digital or die.

The move resonates most in the context of another recent promotion - Kevin Tsujihara taking over as the head of Warner Bros.

Tsujihara, like Powell, was in charge of a less sexy, less moneyed part of a major media company. In Powell's case, digital and microbduget films; Tsujihara was focused on business development and online content before taking over WB's home entertainment division.

Tsujihara, like Powell, was up for a job against people with more experience running flagship "traditional" divisions. In fact, Grey consulted Bruce Rosenblum, one of the men Tsujihara edged out, for advice on his TV hire.

Yet Powell and Tsujihara didn't get their new jobs - higher salaries, big offices and all - because of "traditional" experience. They got these positions because of their handle on new business models, new opportunities and new talent.

In other words, they have a vision for where Hollywood is going - not where it's been. Powell acknowledged as much when she spoke with TheWrap on Monday.

"Rob, Brad and Adam have all recognized the importance of being able to take risks and do things differently," she said. "The definition of TV is evolving and changing in front of us."

And with it, so is the definition of a future senior studio executive. Much of Hollywood's top digital marketing and distribution talent started out tinkering in obscurity -- Powell was one, working in a back room with a staff of interns just a handful of years ago - but wound up with a place at top-level meetings and greenlight committees.

Others are waiting in the wings. Future corner offices would seem to belong to those whose names keep coming up in digital conversations - the likes of Sony's Dwight Caines (president, digital worldwide marketing), TJ Marchetti (SVP, digital marketing at Disney), Danielle DePalma (SVP for digital marketing at Lionsgate) and Lance Sloane (head of digital programming and development for Warner Bros.).

This doesn't mean that Hollywood executives should get on their knees and surrender to Silicon Valley and the upstarts in Silicon Beach. However, they must be open to the many opportunities afforded by new technologies in production, marketing and distribution.

If they aren't, executives like Powell will climb over them on the corporate ladder.

When I first interviewed Amy Powell four years ago, she was the studio's SVP of interactive Marketing. We were talking about how movie studios could use mobile apps to help promote their movies.

In the years since, she became one of Hollywood's fiercest advocates of using social media and other new tools to build buzz for a movie online. (Why she doesn't have a Twitter handle is beyond me).

She also got a promotion (to EVP) and became the president of two divisions - Paramount Digital Entertainment and Insurge Pictures - that stand out as innovators at an otherwise corporatized studio.

Paramount Digital has made apps and games, pushed the studios' content onto new devices like Xbox and Playstation and produced popular web shows like "Burning Love."*

As for Insurge, that label has pumped out inexpensive profit machines like "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" and "The Devil Inside."

Powell will use both of those divisions as blueprints for Paramount TV, which she hopes to run like a start-up. Powell was short on specifics, but here's what you can expect: Paramount will welcome creators both established and unknown, employ data and social media to guide its business and distribute content as widely as possible.

"Digital is a division that has always had its hand on the pulse, what's in the zeitgeist and what's relevant," Powell said. "We understand how to reach audiences organically and authentically to understand the marketplace."

Whether or not you believe a Hollywood company is capable of operating like a start-up, that philosophy differs from the other studios out there.

Unlike Powell, Tsujihara did not enter his new job with a resume of hit movies or web series. However, he spent the previous few years watching declining DVD sales decimate the business and services like Netflix amass loyal audiences.

He also earned the respect of other executives at digital-first companies.

"Kevin Tsujihara is the first guy that has run a studio that really has a deeper understanding of digital," Rich Raddon, the former director of the Los Angeles Film Festival who now runs the Los Angeles-based start-up ZEFR, told TheWrap a few weeks ago. "In five years time, you won't have a studio chief who doesn't come from digital or understand digital in a deep way."

That applies to all studios - film, TV and, yes, digital.

* Funny thing about "Burning Love," it's not just some web show anymore. It earned an Emmy nomination this year months after it got picked up by E! network as a show.

South Africa Banned Film Director Jahmil Qubeka Speaks Out

When the 34th Durban Intl. Film Festival scheduled his film as opening-night attraction, director Jahmil XT Qubeka knew he would be in the spotlight. But he had no idea how intense and heated that spotlight would turn out to be.

On July 22, four days after the uproar began when the opening was cancelled, Qubeka was still doing back-to-back interviews and, as he spoke with Variety, he was literally being followed by every journalist in the area.

The high-energy and garrulous Qubeka sounded hoarse after all the interviews, and is mulling legal action against the government, not for banning his movie, but for besmirching his name. ?I am a father and the ruling of the Film & Publications Board has positioned me as a filmmaker of child pornography. I consider this to be defamation of my character.?

?I will win this. It?s about principle, my reputation. I have a mother and I am a proud son of South Africa.? Qubeka is a Xhosa man and among the greatest traditions of this tribe is the respect for elders, for hierarchy.

He finds added irony that his movie was banned on the birthday of Nelson Mandela, a humanitarian who went to jail fighting for freedom of expression.

The 34-year-old filmmaker? is resolute that the FPB should pay for the slandering of his name. His film, ?Of Good Report,? centers on a high-school teacher who becomes obsessed with a 16-year-old student and the FPB refused to allow a public screening, making that decision 28 minutes into the film. The org explained, ?The minute there is any element of child pornography, as defined in the Act, the committee has to stop viewing.?

Qubeka is not lacking in self-confidence, and seems relatively insouciant about any potential judgment of his talent as a filmmaker, or storyteller. If anything, the FPB?s refusal to classify his film has spurred him on.

In an interview with Variety before the July 18 scheduled opening, Qubecka said he hoped to wake the ?sleeping giant? that is the South Africa film industry. He has succeeded. The banning has stimulated a groundswell of protest in the local entertainment industry, and has taken first position in news reports around the country.

Qubeka grew up in the (former) Republic of Ciskei, an area of the Eastern Cape that was among many ?homelands? established by the apartheid government to geographically isolate the black population. Qubeka is not a ?born free? (the generation born after democracy), but declares, nevertheless, that he ?doesn?t have the weight of apartheid on his shoulders.?

?I was cocooned from it because I grew up in a system that was subsidized by the apartheid government.?

Such ?engineered? marginalization also created social division, and his father was part of the so-called elite. Thus, the young filmmaker grew up in a wealthy home, and had the privilege of access to movies. ?My father was a cinephile. We constantly watched movies.?

While many young helmers will cite Stanley Kubrick and Fritz Lang as an influence, Qubeka is surprisingly unpretentious and shares that Eddie Murphy movies do it for him, adding, ? ?48 Hours? is one of my favorite movies.?

Many years ago, when Mandela was exiting a benefit party for him, he mentioned that he enjoyed Eddie Murphy?s films while incarcerated on Robben Island (once the prison authorities permitted the screening of movies in the prison).

Qubeka adds that his inspiration to become a filmmaker was triggered when he?watched Mel Gibson?s ?Hamlet? video diary.

(AP) ? Rescue crews went into a warehouse last year to save nearly 20,000 rats and reptiles at a wholesale distributor of exotic snakes and rodents, encountering a sight so revolting that they needed crisis counselors to cope.

Many of the animal control workers came out gasping for air and sickened by the heinous sights and smells, including a mixture of death, disease, decay and ammonia from accumulated urine and feces in rat bins. Officials with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals called it the largest-ever seizure of animals in California.

The owner and manager of the business have now been arrested and charged with more than 100 counts each of felony animal cruelty for the way they treated the rats and reptiles. Their company, Global Captive Breeders, raised rats and snakes that were sold at pet stores and swap meets.

The Riverside County district attorney filed the case Friday and a judge issued warrants for owner Mitchell Steven Behm, 54, and company manager David Delgado, also known as Jose Magana, 29. A message left for Behm's attorney was not immediately returned, and a lawyer for Delgado could not be located.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals initiated the investigation after sending an undercover operative to work at the breeding facility in Lake Elsinore, 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Some of the animals were already dead by the time rescue workers got there. The ones still living were too sick to treat and too toxic to move, and had to be euthanized.

The toll the operation took on workers ranged from physical to emotional, said Capt. Cindy Machado, who headed up a team of workers from the Marin Humane Society in Novato and coordinated veterinarians who came from all over the country for the weeklong December operation.

People were throwing up because of the ammonia fumes and "there were times you had to run outside just to catch a breath of fresh air," she said.

People emotionally broke down and had to be excused. Several people ended up with colds and sore throats. "I lost my voice," she said.

"I had some idea what to expect but little could have prepared me for the overwhelming stench of death and decay you could smell from the outside of the facility. On the inside it was overpowering," said Daphna Nachminovitch, senior vice president of cruelty investigations for PETA.

There were 18,400 feeder rats and over 600 snakes, black tree monitors, tokay geckos and sulcata tortoises, Nachminovitch said.

Most of the rats were without food in overcrowded bins and because of a faulty water system, were either drowning or dying of thirst. "Some were literally eating each other alive," she said.

Mitch Behm got a conditional use permit for the business in 2009, said Justin Carlson, a spokesman for Lake Elsinore. The city received one anonymous complaint about the business before PETA stepped in, Carlson said. The company's website listed corporate offices in Rancho Santa Margarita.

A whistleblower contacted PETA and the animal welfare agency sent an undercover investigator to get a job at the business. The investigator documented rats being grabbed by their tails and slammed against poles, stomped on, shot with a BB gun, frozen alive and drowned.

The undercover worker was there for two months, and Nachminovitch said that period of time was needed to document enough photo and video evidence to obtain a search warrant. In addition, the neglect was so far advanced by the time the whistleblower called that it would have been impossible to save the animals.

The 6,100-square-foot warehouse had separate entrances to the reptile and rat rooms, but the snakes didn't fare any better than the rats, Nachminovitch said. Some of the boas and pythons were 15-feet long.

The animals were euthanized in the warehouse and taken to a rendering plant, she said.

Every rescue worker sets out to save animals, Machado said. But there is also satisfaction in giving an animal in pain a humane, peaceful passing, she said.

"I have been with PETA for 15 years and there was an unprecedented amount of active suffering while we were standing there. I am grateful we could end it," Nachminovitch said.

China's rate reform adds to concerns for bank investors

By Pete Sweeney and Gabriel Wildau

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Beijing's move to scrap the floor on lending rates is not yet a game-changer for Chinese banks, but it may have just started the countdown to an eventual industry overhaul which will deprive the banks of virtually risk-free profits.

China bank stocks mostly fell on Monday, the first trading session following the rate reform announced late on Friday. An index of banks listed in Shanghai <.ssebki> was down 1.7 percent in late morning trading, compared with a decline of 0.4 percent for the broader Shanghai Composite Index <.ssec><.ss>.

Any liberalization is seen as positive for China's financial sector and the world's second-largest economy. But many Chinese investors fear the nation's banks, which for years have made easy profits from state-mandated spreads between borrowing and lending rates, will struggle to benefit from more competition.

Reflecting such skepticism, the Shanghai-listed banks trade at a median price-to-earnings ratio of 4.98 based on projected twelve-month earnings and a median price-to-book of 0.97, Thomson Reuters data shows.

Some economists believe nimble banks can reap some benefits after the People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced on Friday that banks could lend at any rate they wanted, enabling them to lure more business by offering lower rates.

However, with few loans extended at or near the previous lending limits, the latest change is seen as having little practical impact.

It could, though, be a prelude to much bigger reform - removing the cap on deposit rates, currently set at 3 percent for one-year deposits - which would dismantle the system that enables lenders to effectively make guaranteed profit margins.

"China has removed almost all controls on lending rates, and rates in the money market and capital market are also effectively free. The next and more important step is, of course, the ceiling on deposit rates," said Wang Tao, head of China research at UBS in Beijing.

That may take some time. The central bank has made it clear it considered lifting the deposit cap as the "most risky" step and promised to proceed with caution and only after implementing various safeguards, including a deposit insurance scheme.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch economist Lu Ting said that as an interim step - just like Japan in late 1970s - China could allow banks to issue floating-rate negotiable certificates of deposits, which could also be traded in the secondary market.

In the meantime, the latest move might help boost confidence in the sector's overall competitiveness and efficiency on the assumption that more reform would follow. Barclays analysts said that it could be positive for bank stocks in the near term.

The ability to offer lower rates would also allow banks to provide an attractive alternative to short-term bond issues, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a research note.

How retail Chinese investors will react is an open question, however. Investors have been wary of Chinese financial firms, which many believe are saddled with underperforming loans dating back to China's stimulus-driven spending spree in the aftermath of the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.

And economists say the latest initiative could give some big, influential state-owned companies leverage to secure lower borrowing costs at the banks' expense.

That could put some pressure on China's biggest banks, such as Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd , China Construction Bank Corp , Bank of China Ltd and Agricultural Bank of China Ltd .

For smaller banks, which rely more on short-term interbank funding, the immediate concern is that their costs will rise even before the final leg of the rate liberalisation kicks in.

Last month, the central bank engineered a cash crunch in the interbank market out of concerns that credit was being funneled into speculative real estate investments and poorly conceived local government investment projects.

Though interbank rates have since retreated from peaks near 30 percent, dealers expect cash to stay tight in coming months.

What if? This was a fun game to play for a few months after Nokia first announced it would dump Symbian and MeeGo in favor of Microsoft?s mobile platform, but now that ship has sailed. Revisiting that tired old question repeatedly is indeed typically boring, but it turns out that doing so for the umpteenth time finally got us a candid explanation straight from the horse?s mouth of exactly why Nokia opted for Windows Phone over the world?s top smartphone platform. Nokia narrowed its loss substantially in the second quarter to -$151 million, but handset sales plummeted 27% to 61.1 million units and average selling prices fell off a cliff. But amid all the gloom, Nokia?s global Lumia shipments climbed to a record 7.4 million units on the back of the Lumia 520, and an important milestone was achieved: Lumia shipments in the second quarter outnumbered BlackBerry smartphone shipments in BlackBerry?s most recent fiscal quarter, which totaled just 6.8 million units. Omaha woman comforts cancer patients with a SMAC

An Omaha woman is bringing an army of sock monkeys to help patients fight cancer.

Jennifer Windrum raised $35,000 to create her first batch of 1,000 Sock Monkeys Against Caner and plans on sending them to Florida, California, Australia, Italy and all over the globe.

The idea was born when Windrum?s mother was battling lung cancer. Windrum was in Omaha and her mother was in Phoenix.

?I couldn?t be with her for all of her treatments, it was especially hard, and so I wanted there to be something tangible that I could give to her to let her know that I was with her, just something of comfort,? Windrum said.

Windrum decided her mother wasn?t the only one who could use some help smacking cancer, so she started an online crowd-funding campaign.
"It really means the world to see these monkeys going all over the world,? she said. ?It makes my heart melt because they meant so much to my mom."

Hundreds of people who supported the crowd-funding campaign opted to give away a monkey rather than get one for themselves, so Windrum will soon be delivering more than 400 SMAC! Monkeys to patients at the Nebraska Medical Center.

?It?s all about comfort and having a little buddy there as you go through something like this,? she said.

Although her mother died in December, Windrum wanted to continue to give others love and support.

?These little creatures are basically my mom?s legacy,? Windrum said.
