Exodus of Cubans fuels clash of new and old

MIAMI (AP) ? At a small store on Eighth Street near Miami's Little Havana, Armando Perez paid $25 to activate his daughter's cell phone in Cuba. Store owner Laura Benitez sat behind a glass window, typing in the phone numbers for Perez and others calling Cuba.

"I call my daughter every week, even if it's just for her to say, 'Papi, I love you,'" said Perez, a thin man who left the island on a boat in 2008.

Benitez, who fled with her parents shortly after the 1959 Cuban Revolution, doesn't have family in Cuba. Many of her clients, however, grew up under the communist system and immigrated in the last 10 years.

"They need to go back to Cuba to see their family," Benitez said. "I don't understand because my parents are here. Maybe if they were in Cuba I would go back."

Some 46,662 Cubans left the island legally and permanently last year, the largest migration in a single year since 1994, according to figures from Cuba's National Statistics Office. Since 2002, the number leaving has hovered around 30,000 annually, making the last 10 years the largest exodus since the start of the revolution. That's in addition to an estimated 7,000 to 19,000 who leave Cuba illegally each year ? some by boat and many with the U.S. as their final destination.

The influx of new arrivals is evident throughout Miami, the heart of Cuba's exile population, from myriad shops offering cell phone services to street fliers about performances by artists who still live on the island.

Cubans arriving today grew up on the island after the revolution, and their relationship with their homeland is different than the wave of immigrants who arrived immediately after Fidel Castro took power. Their growing numbers are bringing those stark contrasts to the fore, leading to moments of friction between groups and putting into question what it means to be a Cuban "exile."

The clashes surface in a big way when older Cuban Americans protest outside concerts and sporting events featuring Cuban musicians and athletes who draw throngs of fans who grew up listening and watching them. The rifts are also apparent in small exchanges at shops like Benitez's.

Benitez's mother was a Jehovah's Witness and spent three years in jail for preaching before fleeing on one of the Freedom Flights, the twice daily flights that carried more than 265,000 Cubans out of the island between 1965 and 1973.

"My mom said we were refugees," Benitez recalled. "If she could have gone back, I don't think she would have. How can we go back to a country that did not want us?"

By contrast, Cubans fleeing today rarely cite political persecution.

"In Cuba, I didn't live so badly," said Perez, a 63-year-old truck driver who walks around with a Bluetooth device in his ear. Perez came to America on a boat with 30 other people to reunite with his son, who had fled several years ago.

At the strip mall where Benitez's store is located, tax accountant Irka Ducasse Blanes recalls how, when she lived in Cuba, she did not understand why Cuban Americans called themselves "exiles."

Blanes, 40, worked in finance at the Hotel Habana Riviera in Cuba. She lived relatively well, traveling internationally for work twice a year. In 2007, she came to America when she was six months pregnant, bringing with her a 7-year-old daughter. Her husband soon followed.

The family wanted a better future for their children, and today Blanes does identify with the term "exile."

"The word 'exile,' I think, means you're in a place where you can't go whenever you want to your birth country," she said.

Many Cuban immigrants today do return, however, some quite frequently. According to the Cuban government, about 500,000 U.S. visitors travel to the island every year, the majority Cuban Americans.

Their reasons for immigrating ? primarily economic and not political persecution? combined with frequent visits home, raise questions about whether they can be accurately called "refugees." U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services define refugees as "generally people outside of their country who are unable or unwilling to return home because they fear serious harm."

Some immigration activists and politicians have said it's time to revisit policies that offer generous privileges to Cubans immigrating to the U.S., like the Cuban Adjustment Act, by which Cubans who reach U.S. soil are allowed to stay and are fast-tracked toward residency.

"I don't criticize anyone who wants to go visit their mom or dad or their dying brother or sister in Cuba," U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, a prominent Florida Republican born in Miami to Cuban parents, told the American Society of News Editors earlier this year. "But I am telling you it gets very difficult to justify someone's status as an exile and refugee when a year and a half after they get here they are flying back to that country over and over again."

Emilio Morales, a market researcher in Cuba before immigrating to the U.S. in 2007, characterized the relationship between revolution era exiles and today's arrivals as "bad." He said recent arrivals are not interested in politics, and don't feel that something was taken from them.

Cubans have come to American in three general waves: Post-revolution immigrants who faced persecution in Cuba, those coming in the 1980s, when thousands were permitted to leave by boat, chiefly in opposition to the communist government's policies, and those who have come since 1994, largely for economic reasons after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

All seven Cuban Americans in Congress come from families that immigrated shortly after 1959, and the majority support hard-line policies toward the island, in line with the views of the generation they represent.

The older generations of Cuban exiles "don't have anything in common with us, culturally, politically, nothing," said Morales, 44, who now runs his own consulting business in Miami.

Rafael Gonzalo, 69, who came to the U.S. in 1959 when he was 15, said Cubans who came decades ago rarely interact with recent arrivals. Cuban Americans today are immigrants, not exiles, Gonzalo said, and their differences range from how they talk and dress to their work ethic.

"Those who come don't like to work a lot," he said. "You have to look for the root of the problem. The problem is, in Cuba they don't work."

Instead, he said, they survive by "resolver," which in Cuba means having to invent or barter to make ends meet.

Blanes cringes when she hears comments like that. She spent long hours studying at night while caring for two young daughters to re-establish her career here. Many of the unemployed have struggled to find jobs, but do want to work, she said.

Back at the store, Benitez empathizes with her clients, but feels compelled to remind them of the freedoms they enjoy here.

Although he doesn't mention it, Perez was once arrested for illegally selling meat he butchered in Cuba, she said. Still, she recognizes that persecution was not Perez's main motivation in leaving.

"Hunger is hunger," Benitez said. "Necessity is necessity. The freedom is somewhere in there, but your stomach is first."

Iranian leaders tweet to the world, but back home Twitter is off-limits- Netanyahu: Rouhani a 'wolf in sheep's clothing'

#HassanRouhani Good evening, President. Are citizens of Iran able to read your tweets?

It?s a simple question that Twitter creator Jack Dorsey put out from his personal account today, drawing a response from Rouhani's account.?

Dorsey was referring to Rouhani and other members of the Iranian regime relying heavily these days on the Twitter social media platform as a way to communicate with the public. Rouhani responded by claiming he is working on ensuring his people will "comfortably b able 2 access all info globally as is their #right."

Back at home, however, it?s a different story.

The Iranian regime has censored the Internet, slowing or even stopping connection and blocking popular sites such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as a way to deter Iranians from organizing political movements, uniting and exchanging ideas. The Iranian people have learned to bypass the censorship using anti-filter programs and software, which are proxies that use third-party servers to get them to these forbidden sites.

?It?s as if a father sits at home all day watching satellite television (which is forbidden in Iran) and then doesn?t let his child watch, telling him it?s bad for him,? said Reza, a 35-year-old satire writer from Tehran. ?It?s a joke how the government here is so two-faced.?

Rouhani first told the world about his historic phone call with President Obama Friday through Twitter.

Rouhani tweeted that he told Obama "Have a Nice Day!" and Obama responded with "Thank you. Khodahafez (goodbye)."

The two men "expressed their mutual political will to rapidly solve the nuclear issue," the tweet said.

Today, Iran?s new Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif used Twitter to communicate a very strong message of a different kind to President Obama:

?Pres. Obama's presumption that Iran is negotiating because of his illegal threats and sanctions is disrespectful of a nation, macho and wrong,? Zarif tweeted.

?President Obama needs consistency to promote mutual confidence. Flip flop destroys trust and undermines U.S. credibility,? he wrote in a second tweet.

This came as a shift in tone from the Iranian regime, that has fully been engaged in a charm offensive toward the U.S. in recent weeks, which led up to a historic phone call between the leaders of the two countries upon Rouhani?s exit from New York City.

While no commitments have been made to cut off the Internet entirely, threats have been made since early 2011, when Iran unveiled plans for a ?halal network,? or an ?Islamically permissible? intranet that would disconnect the nation from the rest of the world.

At the time of the announcement, Iranian authorities said the new infrastructure would be revealed soon, but did not give a specific time frame.

Iran?s network could mirror what Burma, another nation with Draconian cyber crackdowns, has done to isolate its people from the Web, limiting users to a national intranet at a high price that deters most potential users.

In December, ironically, the man who forbid an entire country from visiting social-networking sites and even sentenced violators to death, Iran's highest dictator and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei started his own Facebook fan page, which ignited quite a stir in the media world.

Since the anti-regime protests of 2009, dubbed the "Twitter Revolution," the Iranian people have had an overwhelming presence on social media sites and blogs.

Last year, the regime allegedly tortured to death 35-year-old blogger Sattar Beheshti, who was targeted for continually publicizing social and political issues that were considered unflattering to the regime on his personal blog and on Facebook.

While Beheshti was a small threat to the regime, his torture and subsequent death may likely have been a preemptive warning to the millions of young Iranians who have taken their anti-government disenchantments to the blogosphere.

Since the 2009 uprisings, roughly $76 million of the total $11.5 billion allocated to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has been spent on cyberwarfare. Iran?s cyberpolice monitor the Internet, various websites, blogs and individuals suspected of using circumvention tools designed to evade the censors.

AT&T investigating possible $5 billion sale of cell towers

AT&T

Nearly 10,000 cell towers could be up for sale; AT&T planning to lease back what it sells

Reports today indicate that AT&T is considering a sale of its cell towers to other companies for upwards of $5 billion in order to fund other initiatives in the company. According to sources of Bloomberg, AT&T is partnering up with financial firms TAP Advisors LLC and JPMorgan Chase to explore the merits of selling off the 10,000 cell towers the carrier owns in the US.

These towers currently generate about $326 million in annual revenue from roaming and leasing agreements for AT&T, but reports indicate that an all-out sale of the towers could net it up to $5 billion. The expected buyers of so many towers are expected to be some of the largest tower operators in the country such as American Tower and Crown Castle.

Now a sale of the towers by AT&T doesn't mean that customers will lose coverage area, however. The structure of such agreements usually involves a sale of the physical tower sites as well as an agreement to lease back the use of the towers for its network. Similar deals from T-Mobile in the past netted the company $2.4 billion in 2012, and a similar move by AT&T could give it extra cash it needs to further its other initiatives.

Raleigh Embraces Bluegrass in Preparations for World of Bluegrass ...

Print

Raleigh, N.C. (September 4, 2013) ? When the International Bluegrass Music Association announced in May 2012 that they would be moving their annual World of Bluegrass program from Nashville to Raleigh, many North Carolinians celebrated. And a group of hard-working, dedicated community leaders got to work, forming a Local Organizing Committee to help IBMA connect with local, regional, and state resources; and to make sure the local community was ready to welcome IBMA members and bluegrass fans from around the world.

From the North Carolina Pork Council, whose Whole Hog State Barbecue Championship is a key piece of the Wide Open Bluegrass Festival that will cap off the week-long bluegrass celebration, to the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, partnering with IBMA to bring bluegrass musicians into schools during World of Bluegrass, and so many more local partners, North Carolina will be infused with bluegrass this month even more so than normal!

Working closely with the IBMA Board of Directors, the Raleigh Convention Center and the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau created the local organizing committee with four primary goals:

  1. To support IBMA in their role as official host.
  2. To transform the WOB into a ?weeklong experience,? rather than a 5-day convention.
  3. To ?roll out the red carpet? for all visitors to Raleigh ?IBMA members: musicians, industry, promoters, fans, media and sponsors.
  4. To present Raleigh, the Triangle Region and the State of North Carolina in the best possible light to a passionate worldwide bluegrass community.

The LOC is made up of 48 members, representing 22 organizations, including media outlets, members of local bands, record label representatives, local business owners, downtown Raleigh organizations, and more. IBMA?s North Carolina-based Board Members also serve on the Local Organizing Committee.

Among some of the LOC?s many initiatives:

  • The Arts Activation Committee created a speakers? bureau around the event, and the Wake County Public Library System is among those who will host talks and demonstrations about bluegrass music throughout the month of September. Others hosting speakers this month include Quail Ridge Books and Music and the Town of Cary.
  • The Technology Committee is working closely with IBMA to create a comprehensive event app, which will be available for iPhone and Android devices later this month.
  • Members of the Marketing Committee and other LOC members have traveled around the country to various festivals, spreading the word about World of Bluegrass and introducing the bluegrass community to Raleigh.
  • The LOC hosted a ?preview day? for IBMA members to visit the Convention Center and Red Hat Amphitheater back in May, where more than 100 people saw firsthand the state-of-the art facilities and enthusiasm that North Carolina is bringing to this event.
  • Thanks to the NC Symphony?s involvement with the LOC, banjo master B?la Fleck will perform in a special Symphony Concert on Tuesday, Sept. 24; Fleck will also present a master class on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 26 for students at William Peace University, which is inviting their 60 Musical Theater students and music students from four area high schools.
  • United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County will put performances or master classes in 12 Wake County schools the week of World of Bluegrass. Elementary schools will have performances; middle schools with orchestras and/or strings programs, master classes. These presentations are made possible by the County of Wake.
  • United Arts also worked with the Wake County Public School System to present a special bluegrass in-service for arts and music teachers in late August, led by IBMA Executive Director Nancy Cardwell and Raleigh?s own Kickin Grass Band.

And the Signature Event Committee has been hard at work creating the Wide Open Bluegrass StreetFest, which will feature more than 50 bands on three stages along Fayetteville Street on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28. Performers include a broad mix of local, national, and international talent. The dance tent will feature clogging performances, participatory square dances, and late-night open dancing Friday and Saturday nights. On Saturday near the convention center, don?t miss the youth music stage ? situated on the outdoor plaza at the Convention Center. Bands performing here are being selected by the IBMA Youth Council. Additionally, the street festival will contain vendors, concessions, an Exhibit Hall and a Masters Workshop Stage in the Raleigh Convention Center.

Adding to the excitement of the StreetFest is the North Carolina Whole Hog Barbecue State Championship?a weekend of bluegrass-flavored fun for the whole family. The Pork Council will make a contribution of up to $10,000 in barbecue sales income to IBMA. More details about this event can be found at www.ncpork.org.

The Wide Open Bluegrass StreetFest would not be possible without generous supporters: Presenting sponsor PNC Bank; all-stages sponsor R.A. Jeffreys featuring Big Boss, Bud Light and Lone Rider; Rex Health Care and UNC Health Care; Downtown Raleigh Alliance, Martin Guitars, NC Railroad, Clarion Raleigh, Marriott Raleigh City Center, Sheraton Raleigh, Red Hat, Duke Energy, Curtis Media, KIX 102.9, The News & Observer, Our State Magazine, VisitNC.com, WRAL, and WTVD ABC-11. The StreetFest is brought to you by a collaboration among the City of Raleigh, Wake County, PineCone, and Greater Raleigh Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The free Wide Open StreetFest is one of several ways that music fans can experience bluegrass in Raleigh the weekend of September 27-28: in addition to the free StreetFest stages, there are ticketed shows which take place at the Red Hat Amphitheater and the Raleigh Convention Center Ballroom. While reserved tickets for both Friday and Saturday?s shows at the Red Hat Amphitheater are sold out, general admission tickets for that venue are still available, and can be purchased at ETix.com or www.ibma.org.

D?Addario Strings is the national sponsor for the ticketed portion of IBMA?s Wide Open Bluegrass festival; half of the proceeds will go to the Bluegrass Trust Fund, which helps members of the bluegrass music community in times of emergency need. The remaining proceeds help IBMA with marketing and professional development efforts throughout the year.

Fans can also attend the ?Bluegrass Ramble? showcases all week, from Tuesday-Saturday evenings, in six venues throughout downtown Raleigh, 10 pm-2 am: The Lincoln Theatre, Long View Center, Pour House Music Hall, Tir Na Nog, Kings, The Architect Bar & Social Club. Public participation is encouraged; showcases are ?the ticket? for bluegrass fans.

And tickets are also available for the International Bluegrass Awards show, which will be held in Raleigh?s historic Memorial Auditorium in the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, Sept. 26. NC?s own Steep Canyon Rangers will host the event, and announced performers include all five of 2013?s ?Entertainer of the Year? nominees ? Balsam Range, Blue Highway, Dailey &Vincent, The Gibson Brothers and The Del McCoury Band ? as well as Female Vocalist nominee Rhonda Vincent and her band the Rage, among many others.

For more details and to purchase tickets for Wide Open Bluegrass, visit www.wideopenbluegrass.com, or stop by the Raleigh Convention Center on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for on-site World of Bluegrass registration and tickets to the Awards Show and Bluegrass Ramble. Additional information is also available at www.ibma.org or call 1-888-GET-IBMA.

Scientists confirm Voyager 1 probe is in interstellar space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Sep 12, 2013 6:16pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Scientists have been debating for more than a year whether NASA's 36-year-old Voyager 1 spacecraft has left the solar system and become the first human-made object to reach interstellar space.

By a fluke measurement, they now know definitively it has.

"We made it," lead Voyager scientist Edward Stone, from the California Institute of Technology, told reporters on Thursday.

The key piece of evidence came by chance when a pair of solar flares blasted charged particles in Voyager's direction in 2011 and 2012. It took a year for the particles to reach the spacecraft, providing information that could be used to determine how dense the plasma was in Voyager's location.

Plasma consists of charged particles and is more prevalent in the extreme cold of interstellar space than in the hot bubble of solar wind that permeates the solar system.

Voyager 1, now 13 billion miles (21 billion km) from Earth, could not make the measurement directly because its plasma detector stopped working more than 30 years ago.

"This was basically a lucky gift from the sun," Stone said.

Extrapolating from the measurements, scientists believe Voyager actually left the solar system in August 2012. That summer, the spacecraft radioed back another tantalizing piece of information, showing a huge spike in the number of galactic cosmic rays from outside the solar system and a corresponding decrease in particles emanating from the sun.

Scientists had been reluctant to conclude last year that Voyager had reached interstellar space because it was still picking up magnetic field measurements that were very similar to the sun's magnetic field.

Computer models had predicted a significant shift in the interstellar magnetic field's alignment.

"The magnetic field is still something that puzzles us considerably," said physicist Gary Zank, with the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Scientists now believe the interstellar magnetic field is somehow draped around and twisted by the heliosphere, the bubble of space under the sun's influence.

Understanding how that happens is just one of the questions the Voyager team will attempt to figure out while the probe still has power. Voyager 1, and a sister spacecraft Voyager 2, use heat released by the natural decay of radioactive plutonium to generate electrical power for their instruments.

'TRULY ALIEN ENVIRONMENT'

After 2020, scientists expect they will have to start turning off instruments, until around 2025 when the probes will be completely out of power and fall silent.

Voyager 2, which is heading out of the solar system in another direction, has five to seven more years before it reaches interstellar space, said Donald Gurnett, a longtime Voyager scientist at the University of Iowa.

"We're in a truly alien environment," Zank said. "What Voyager is going to discover truly beggars the imagination."

The two Voyager probes, which were both launched in 1977 to study the outer planets of the solar system, contain gold phonographic records etched with music, greetings, sounds and images from Earth. The project was spearheaded by astronomer Carl Sagan, who died in 1996.

With Voyager 1 having left the solar system, the next time it will encounter a star is in 40,000 years, when it flies about 1.7 light years away from a star in the constellation Camelopardalis called AC +79 3888. The spacecraft is traveling nearly 1 million miles (1.6 million km) a day.

"Voyager has once again joined the ranks of the great human journeys of exploration," Gurnett said. "This is the first journey into interstellar space."

NASA's twin Pioneer spacecraft, launched in the 1970s, also are leaving the solar system, but they have run out of power to relay information back to Earth.

The research is published in this week's journal Science.

(AP) ? After Michael Vick kneeled down for the final time, having sapped the life out of the Robert Griffin III welcome back party, the exhausted Philadelphia Eagles offense exchanged the usual pleasantries with the even-more-spent Washington Redskins defense.

"The Redskins were like, 'Next time we play you guys, you need to slow it down a bit,'" Eagles center Jason Kelce said.

Good luck with that. RG3 and the Redskins just couldn't keep up with Vick, LeSean McCoy and the frenetic offense unleashed by coach Chip Kelly on the NFL on Monday night. The Eagles crammed 53 plays into a 30-minute first half, took a 26-point lead in the third quarter and held on for a 33-27 upset of the defending NFC East champs.

"You have great dreams and you have nightmares," said Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, describing the first half. "That was a great dream."

Running the don't-take-a-breath attack that won 87 percent of the time during Kelly's four years at the University of Oregon, Vick completed 15 of 25 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, and he also ran nine times for 56 yards and a score. McCoy piled up 184 yards on 31 carries, including a 34-yard TD. DeSean Jackson had seven catches for 104 yards and a TD.

"I've never been a part of anything like it," Vick said. "When the first quarter was over, I thought we was about to go to go into halftime. It was unreal. The only thing I could tell myself was, 'It's going to be a long season.'"

Perhaps the most remarkable accomplishment by the Eagles: They managed to upstage Griffin. The game was played eight months to the day since the Redskins quarterback had major knee surgery, and his return was the culmination of a dedicated, high-profile rehab that included a public clash with Washington coach Mike Shanahan that barely put a dent in the fans' fervent adoration for their franchise player.

Griffin was the undisputed star of the show ? at least until kickoff. He arrived at the stadium wearing an autographed T-shirt from Les Dauphins de Nice, the American football team in France that welcomed him for a workout during his honeymoon in July. When he threw warm-up passes at the 45-yard line, three camera crews were at the 40. He led a team huddle at the 10, just 5 yards from the spot where his knee gave out in January. He was greeted by baseball legend Tommy Lasorda on the sideline, then made a spectacle of an entrance when the starting lineups were announced, carrying the Redskins flag all the way to the end zone for an extended kneel-down for all to see.

That's the sort of attention that Vick once commanded. And, when the game began, Vick was the better quarterback. At 33, he's 10 years older than Griffin and had to fight for his starting job in training camp, but he's still got game. It would have been a bigger rout if Vick's lateral on first-and-goal at the 4 hadn't been tipped by linebacker Ryan Kerrigan and returned 75 yards for a Redskins touchdown.

Meanwhile, the masses didn't get much of a chance to chant "R-G-3!" ? because the Redskins offense couldn't stay on the field. Their first seven plays: lost fumble by Alfred Morris, 3-yard loss by Morris, penalty for illegal shift, screen to Morris that got back some yards, interception thrown by Griffin into triple coverage, pass dropped by fullback Darrel Young, safety that occurred when Morris bobbled a pitch in the end zone.

The Redskins were trailing 33-7 late in the third quarter before three consecutive touchdowns ? the last coming with 1:14 to play ? made the score more respectable.

Wearing a brace on his right knee, Griffin completed 30 of 49 passes for 329 yards, but 169 yards came in the fourth after the Eagles had taken control. He was also intercepted twice ? the first multi-interception game of his career. He ran only five times for 24 yards.

Washington didn't run a play in Philadelphia territory until the second half. At one point, the Eagles were outgaining the Redskins 146-3. Even Kai Forbath, who made 17 of 18 field goals in his rookie year, was wide right in the third quarter. Shanahan's team also committed 10 penalties for 75 yards.

"Had a serious case of the can't-get-rights," Griffin said. "Penalties, hurting ourselves. I don't throw picks, Alfred doesn't fumble, and Kai doesn't miss field goals. All three of those happened tonight. So we'll get better, no doubt."

There was a moment in the second quarter when the weary Redskins defense had more cramps (two) than their offense had first downs (one).

The first-half stats resembled something from an Oregon opener against a creampuff, not a game between NFC East rivals. Total yards: 322-75. First downs: 21-3. Time of possession: 20:20-9:40. Philadelphia's 53 plays were the second-most in a first half by any NFL team since 1991.

"That was the first time I've used oxygen since college. It wears on you, but I think it wears on the defense a lot more," Kelce said. "I think we'll see a few more guys coming up with cramps, regardless of whether those are real or not."

NOTES: Kerrigan left in the fourth quarter with concussion symptoms. ... McCoy finished one yard shy of his career high in yards rushing. ... Redskins S Brandon Meriweather missed the game with a groin injury.

Asia stocks up on China output as Syria fears fade

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets advanced Tuesday after the likelihood of an imminent, U.S.-led attack against Syria faded and manufacturing rebounded in China.

President Barack Obama has faced difficulty trying to amass support for U.S. military intervention in Syria, where an alleged chemical attack by government forces killed scores of civilians outside of Damascus. Britain's parliament voted against involvement, and Russia and China have been critical of the idea.

Obama announced over the weekend that he would seek approval from Congress for military strikes, but he faced skepticism among many U.S. lawmakers about the intelligence regarding the chemical attack and the value of an intervention to United States interests.

"To be sure, a Syria strike no longer being imminent is reason for relief; but that does not mean that Syria has dropped off the geo-politics radar," said Vishnu Varathan of Mizuho Bank Ltd. in Singapore.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 2.5 percent to 13,917.64. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.7 percent to 1,936.86. Australia's S&P ASX/200 added 0.2 percent to 5,198.90. Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 1 percent to 22,384.67.

Sentiment was boosted Monday by two surveys that showed China's manufacturing sector improved last month after prolonged weakness.

The HSBC purchasing managers' index rose to 50.1 points in August, a level that indicates expansion as output and new orders edged up slightly and order backlogs rose at the fastest pace in two years. The official China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing PMI rose to 51.0 from July's 50.3, which was the highest level and biggest increase this year.

Both indexes use a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 indicate a contraction.

Traders will be waiting for Wall Street to reopen later Tuesday after a three-day Labor Day weekend as well as the latest data from the Institute for Supply Management on U.S. manufacturing for August.

On Monday, Britain's FTSE 100 gained 1.5 percent to close at 6,506.19, thanks to cellphone company Vodafone, which said it was with in talks with Verizon to sell its U.S. mobile business. Confirmation of the $130 billion deal came after trading in London had finished for the day, but Vodafone's shares closed up 3.4 percent on expectations of the purchase.

Germany's DAX index ended the day up 1.7 percent to 8,243.87 while France's CAC-40 jumped 1.8 percent to 4,006.01. Italian and Spanish stocks were also up after surveys showed manufacturing activity rose in the two countries, which are in recession and have been focal points of Europe's debt crisis.

Benchmark crude for October delivery was down $1.01 to $106.64 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange as fears of military strikes on Syria continued to fade. The contract fell $1.15 to close at $107.65 on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose slightly to $1.3189 from $1.3187 late Monday. The dollar fell to 99.31 yen from 99.56 yen.

Video games boost visual attention but reduce impulse control

[unable to retrieve full-text content]A person playing a first-person shooter video game like Halo or Unreal Tournament must make decisions quickly. That fast-paced decision-making, it turns out, boosts the player's visual skills but comes at a cost, according to new research: reducing the person's ability to inhibit impulsive behavior. This reduction in what is called "proactive executive control" appears to be yet another way that violent video games can increase aggressive behavior.

New Zealand's Fonterra finds botulism bacteria in dairy ingredient

By Naomi Tajitsu

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's Fonterra, the world's largest dairy exporter, on Saturday said it had found a bacteria which can cause botulism in some of its dairy products, prompting China to issue a recall of affected products.

New Zealand authorities said they were holding back some widely used infant formula products from supermarket shelves.

Fonterra said it had sold New Zealand-made whey protein concentrate contaminated with Clostridium Botulinum to eight customers, including food and beverage companies and animal stock feed firms, for possible use in infant formula, body building powder, and other products.

The Ministry of Primary Industries said that it had been told by Fonterra that the products in question were exported to Australia, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

China, which imports the majority of its milk powder from New Zealand, asked domestic importers to recall any products which may have been contaminated by the bacteria, and ramped up scrutiny of New Zealand dairy products coming into the country.

This is the second dairy contamination issue involving New Zealand's largest company this year. In January, Fonterra said it had found traces of dicyandiamde, a potentially toxic chemical used in fertilizer, in some of its products.

The announcement comes as Fonterra is planning to launch its own branded milk formula in China, five years after its involvement in a 2008 scandal in which melamine-tainted infant formula killed at least six and made thousands ill.

Fonterra said that it was up to companies to announce recalls, adding that none had done so yet. It would not comment on the level of contamination found in the whey protein product.

"At this stage, no product recalls have been announced," Fonterra said in a statement. None of its own branded products were affected, it said.

It also said that of the eight companies affected, three were food companies, two were beverage companies and three manufactured animal stock feed.

Chinese state radio said Fonterra was notifying three Chinese firms affected by the contamination.

China's product safety agency said it had asked New Zealand to take immediate measures to "prevent the products in question from harming the health of Chinese consumers".

"The administration has also asked importers to immediately recall any possibly contaminated products and has required all local quarantine and inspection bodies to further strengthen inspection and supervision of New Zealand dairy products exported to China," the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

Clostridium Botulinum is often found in soil. The Fonterra case was caused by an unsanitary pipe at a processing plant.

The bacteria can cause botulism, a potentially fatal disease which affects the muscles and can cause respiratory problems. Infant botulism can attack the intestinal system.

The Ministry of Primary Industries said five batches of Karicare formula manufactured in New Zealand for babies aged six months and older were produced using the contaminated product.

Karicare is made by Nutricia, which operates in New Zealand, and supplied by Fonterra. The brand is popular in China.

The MPI said it had been informed by Nutricia that one batch was on a ship, another was in storage in Australia, while the remaining three were in a warehouse in New Zealand.

All of these products would be held back from the market and the MPI advised against using them.

"Since the levels necessary to cause illness are small, our focus now is on establishing whether any product available in markets is affected at all," an MPI spokesman told Reuters.

FONTERRA CHIEF TRAVELS TO CHINA

Fonterra is a big supplier of wholesale milk powder to Chinese dairy firms and also supplies multinational food and beverage companies.

It said there had been no reports of any illness linked to the affected whey protein, and that fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese, spreads and UHT milk products were not affected.

The company said that Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings would travel to China from Europe at the weekend to discuss the issue.

The announcement comes as China has started to tighten dairy import regulations to improve overall food safety standards. In recent weeks, Beijing has introduced regulations restricting the operations of smaller infant formula brands.

Foreign branded infant formula is a prized commodity in China, where consumers are distrustful of domestic brands given a series of food safety scandals. This has created a lucrative market for foreign brands, including global heavyweights Nestle, Danone and Mead Johnson.

While Fonterra is a major supplier of bulk milk powder products used in formula in China, it has stayed out of the branded space after the melamine incident. It had held a stake in Chinese dairy company Sanlu, which collapsed after it was discovered to have added melamine to bulk up formulas in 2008.

Let's Talk About Pets, Baby - Gaslamp Ball

About a week or so ago I got a huge box full of Padres memorabilia in the mail from RJ's Fro. He just sent it out of the goodness of his heart, and when I say it was huge I mean it. He had told me he was going to send some cards and a John Kruk mini-bat but I had no idea what I was in for. There were tons of cards, literally a dozen posters, hats, pins, a clock (!), a beach towel, and even more. You name it and it was probably in that box, but I'll get to that other goodness at a later date; right now I'm going to focus on one of the things he included. Well, ten related things he included:

Snapshot_201303261_1139_medium

That's Blueprint: The Official Playbill of the San Diego Padres, but you already knew that. 'Fro sent ten recent issues and I leafed through one of them until I got to the Petco Pet Profile. I read it and then immediately flipped to the Pet Profile in every other issue. Each one features a Padres player or someone related to the team with their pet and a series of questions about their pet. The thing is, all of their pets are dogs! I mean, I'm all about some pwetty wittle puppies, but come on. Show cats some love.

Snapshot_201303261_1138_medium
Are dogs seriously that much more popular than cats? In the interest of fairness to cats and cat people, I'm going to answer the typical Pet Profile questions about my cat. I might not be as rad as a Chris Denorfia or a Tim Stauffer, but Cora is just as cool as their tongue-wagging ankle-biters.

Zz17_medium
How old is Cora and how did you get her?

She's three and I got her at a bodega. No lie. I went to a convenience store to get some morning beers and there was a cage of free kittens by the door. Of course there was. The place was so gully that they sold loosies and "incense", so it only made sense that they were getting their cat hustle on too. She was the little runt cast off to a corner so I felt bad for her. I didn't even really like cats; it was just pretty much a pity move at the time.

How did you come up with her name?

She is named after Joey, and to a lesser extent, Alex Cora. Oddly, Alex Cora got released by the Rangers about an hour after I got her and named her. I vaguely recall that Dagwood Bumstead's boss's wife's name was Cora, but that didn't really play into it.

Athletes often follow strict diets for performance. Do you do anything special for her diet?

Not really. She's spoiled when it comes to food, though. She always has two kinds of dry foods out along with a can of wet food. Also, she doesn't trifle with tap water.

What is her favorite snack or treat?

Like Huston Street's French Bulldogs Major and Mia, she goes nuts over cheese. It's not the best thing in the world for a cat so I only let her have it very sparingly. She loves yogurt so much that I can't eat it anymore because she won't leave me alone when I do. Last time I ate yogurt, I had to shut myself in the bedroom and it just wasn't worth it.

How would you describe her personality?

The same way anyone would describe their pet's personality, I guess. Loving sometimes, playful others. Incredibly loyal and fairly clingy.

Do you have any hobbies that involve your pet?

We like to play ball. I'll roll it to her and she'll dive for it and roll it back. She's a natural!

What's the funniest thing your pet does?

She stands on two legs to get me to pet her if she hasn't seen me for like ten minutes, but that's more precious than it is funny. It's pretty hilarious when she "swims" on the carpet; she just lays on her side and drags herself with her front paws.

Last but not least, does she have any Padres gear?

Like bullpen catcher Justin Hatcher's boxer Diesel, she has a Padres ball she plays with but nothing she wears.

There. That was fascinating to absolutely nobody other than me. Now here's where you come in: Share a little something about your pet(s)-- cat, dog, iguana, whatever-- in the comments, be it a picture of them in a Padres bandana or something, or answering some or all of the questions above. Or, you know, whatever.

Australian budget deficit blows out on China slowdown

Australia said yesterday its budget deficit has blown out to A$30 billion (US$26.6 billion) and revenues are shrinking, as it unveiled a preelection mini-budget that includes a controversial plan to tax bank deposits.

The government also cut its growth outlook for the fiscal year to June next year as the mining-driven economy grapples with a Chinese slowdown that has seen prices of commodities tumble.

With national polls approaching, Australian Treasurer Chris Bowen said tough conditions had seen a further A$33.3 billion wiped off revenue estimates over the next four years. This, he said, had forced the ruling Labor party into A$17.4 billion of ?responsible savings.?

The statement?s release added to speculation that Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd could call an election as early as this weekend, having now outlined fresh budget numbers, as well as new policies on a raft of key issues.

The government also upped its forecast unemployment rate for the 2013-2014 fiscal year by 50 basis points to 6.25 percent.

However, while the budget deficit for this fiscal year had ballooned from the A$18 billion forecast in the May budget, Bowen stuck to the government?s plan to return a surplus in 2016-2017.

He said the fall in commodities prices sparked by weakening growth in key export market China meant Australia?s economy would grow 2.5 percent from last month to June next year, slower than the 2.75 percent forecast in May. It is expected to rise to 3 percent for the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

?The transition in the resources sector from a record investment boom to strong growth in production and exports is currently under way,? he said. ?This will mean that non-mining sectors of the economy will need to lead growth in the future. This transition poses challenges for the economy.?

AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said he was stunned at the scale of the deficit and speed at which it had worsened.

?I?m shocked by how much it has deteriorated,? he said, adding that the promised return to surplus has been repeatedly delayed.

?We seem to keep pushing out the return to surplus and the return to surplus gets steeper and steeper as time goes by,? he said.

In a bid to plug its revenue shortfall the government this week announced a plan to hike tobacco taxes by 12.5 percent per year over the next four years, to raise more than A$5 billion.

And yesterday, Bowen said he will also tax bank deposits up to A$250,000 at 0.05 percent from 2016, raising a forecast A$733 million in the first 18 months.

Bowen said the cash would go into a new Financial Stability Fund, but will be counted as revenue in the budget, to protect savings in the event of a bank collapse.

Time Warner Cable loses CBS channels, CBS says first time dropped from cable

Earlier this week negotiations between CBS and Time Warner Cable broke down and for a few minutes, channels started dropping from the cable service. An extension on the deadline brought channels back quickly, but time is up once again and subscribers are being greeted by the message above. The blackout applies to CBS in New York City, Los Angeles and Dallas, plus Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix and Smithsonian Channel nationwide. According to CBS, this is the first time it's ever been dropped from a cable system, and it has followed up with a note from Showtime claiming TWC removed the premium channel despite authorization to keep it while negotiations continue. Time Warner Cable has its own statement, claiming CBS has "refused to have a productive discussion" since the Tuesday morning extension in talks.

With the NFL season looming we'll see how long TWC is willing to push CBS.com (which some of you have reported is being blocked by CBS), Aereo and antennas as alternative solutions in these major markets and whether CBS is willing to live without the viewership. For now, subscribers missing The Doctors can check out a video from TWC explaining exactly what happens behind the scenes when channels go dark.

Update: TechCrunch has a statement from CBS confirming it's blocked Time Warner Cable customers from streaming full episodes. This is similar to Fox blocking Cablevision subscribers on Hulu during a carriage dispute in 2010, although that turned out to be short-lived.

Is DeGeneres part of academy's push for diversity?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences isn't as much of an old-boys' club as it used to be.

The group named two women to prominent positions this week, including Friday's announcement that Ellen DeGeneres will host the 2014 Oscar show. Earlier in the week, the academy's board of governors elected Cheryl Boone Isaacs president, the first African-American to hold the post and the first woman in three decades.

In June, the organization invited 276 new members to join ? 100 more than the previous year and arguably its most diverse slate ever.

Could this be in response to the 2012 Los Angeles Times study that stung the academy by pointing out what many suspected: Hollywood's pre-eminent film organization is a mostly white, male group?

"This is all in the shadow of Dawn Hudson's appointment as C.O.O. last year," said awards expert Tom O'Neil. "The academy is making an extraordinary effort to embrace women and minorities, and be (more) inclusive."

Other industry watchers say these visible appointments are part of the academy's continuing effort to shed its old-boy image ? one that may have been reinforced last year by Seth MacFarlane's sexist humor and the departure of short-lived Oscar producer Brett Ratner after publicly making homophobic remarks.

"If you wanted to pick somebody that would tacitly or implicitly be an absolute rejection of the bad behavior of the last couple years, what could be a better way to distance yourself from that than to pick the most famous and popular lesbian entertainer in the world?" said Scott Feinberg, an industry analyst for The Hollywood Reporter.

Such prominent academy appointments for Hudson, DeGeneres and Boone Isaacs send a message to women interested in making movies.

"This is the kind of leadership and these are the kinds of examples that stand out for those women who will follow," said Cathy Schulman, president of Women in Film. "This is what gives people hope and encouragement."

DeGeneres is also a proven commodity. She successfully hosted the Oscars in 2007, drawing almost as many viewers as MacFarlane did last year.

"The academy doesn't want to take any chances with the performance skills of the host," O'Neil said. "This is a good, smart choice that will put the focus back on the content of the show, rather than will the host crash and burn."

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who produced the 2013 telecast, are returning for next year's show. O'Neil notes that the veteran producers are also openly gay and vocal supporters of gay rights.

DeGeneres, 55, has developed a devoted following with her 10-year-old daytime talk show, which can serve as a built-in platform to promote the Academy Awards.

Boone Isaacs, the academy's new president, is a veteran marketing executive and longtime academy member and governor.

"She's a very worthy candidate regardless of what she looks like," Feinberg said. "But the fact that she is a relatively younger African-American woman and that's the face of the academy, that's a significant symbolic thing."

For real change, these appointments can't just be exceptions, Schulman said, but "exceptions converted into the norm."

"Change happens when the numbers increase," she said. "Change doesn't happen overnight, but it was long overdue that the academy made some appointments like this."

Among the diverse new members invited to join the academy are Prince, Jennifer Lopez, writer-director Ava DuVernay, Sandra Oh, Paula Patton and songwriter Siedah Garrett.

DeGeneres, Boone Isaacs and the Oscar producers were not available to comment on this story.

Qualcomm's Anand Chandrasekher says eight-core processors are 'dumb'

Qualcomm's Anand Chandrasekher says eightcore processors are 'dumb'

In response to a question about whether Qualcomm will create an eight-core processor like MediaTek's upcoming model, Senior VP Anand Chandrasekher told a Taiwanese publication "we don't do dumb things." He added that "you can't take eight lawnmower engines, put them together and now claim you have an eight-cylinder Ferrari." Instead, he said Qualcomm is focused on good modems, long battery life and affordability, rather than "simply throwing cores together." Though MediaTek had no comment on that, it claimed earlier that all eight cores in its upcoming CPU can operate at the same time to improve stability and battery life -- unlike the Exynos 5's big.LITTLE configuration, for instance. Whether you agree with Chandrasekher or not, eight seems better than four, meaning most CPU outfits -- including Qualcomm -- will likely jump on the octa-core bandwagon.

Warwickshire schoolgirls gearing up for gruelling 140-mile cycle ...

14-year-olds are hoping to raise around ?1,000 for British Blind Sport by cycling from Whitehaven to Sunderland

Two Warwickshire schoolgirls are gearing up for a gruelling 140-mile cycle across England ? in a bid to raise money for blind sportsmen and women.

Lucy Abell and Camilla Dent, both year nine pupils at King?s High School in Warwick, will embark on the biggest challenge of their lives later this month.

The 14-year-olds are hoping to raise around ?1,000 for British Blind Sport, by cycling from Whitehaven to Sunderland, in just three days.

The local charity enables visually impaired people to have the same opportunities as sighted people to access and enjoy sport and recreation.

Camilla said: ?Lucy and I just fancied training for a challenge. I had done a day of the Coast to Coast route three years ago and had always wanted to do to the whole course.

?British Blind Sport is a charity which gives real help and encouragement to blind people and allows them to access a wide range of sports and sporting events.?

Lucy added: ?The charity is based locally in Leamington and both of us thought it was a really good cause. Knowing that the organisation needs all the funds it can get, has really spurred us on doing our training.

?The combination of that and watching the Tour De France has helped us put the miles in over the last few weeks so hopefully we will be fully prepared.?

British Blind Sport is based at Tachbrook Park and was founded in 1976. Over the years it has become the leading voice for visually impaired people in the world of sport and leisure across the UK.

Its senior fundraiser Lucy Shepherd, said: ?We are so grateful to anyone who takes part in an event to raise money for British Blind Sport. We do get people of all ages taking part in a wide range of events and it?s great to hear that Camilla and Lucy have organised this cycle ride from coast to coast.

"They are aiming to complete the route in three days which would be a considerable achievement.?

The girls have been given a grant for their accommodation by the King?s High School Parents Association. To donate visit www.justgiving.com/millalucy.

'Our Nixon' on CNN tells the same old story of disgraced President

Exported.;

Bettman-UPI

"Our Nixon" examines the President through the lenses of his trusted lieutenants, H.R. Haldeman and John Erlichman, who shot home movies in the Oval Office.

For a while, it looks like ?Our Nixon? will give us a different perspective on one of the most documented men in modern history, the late President Richard M. Nixon.

Right around the time it hits Watergate, though, it falls onto a familiar path, concluding he planted the seeds of his presidency?s own doom.

We sort of knew that.

?Our Nixon? promises early to see Nixon?s White House years ? literally ? through the lenses of his trusted lieutenants, H.R. ?Bob? Haldeman and John Ehrlichman.

Both are dead now, as is Nixon. Their lenses live on. Long before iPhones, both were compulsive filmers, shooting more than 500 reels of Super 8 home movies while they worked in the White House.

The filmmakers weave excerpts in with contemporary news footage and commentary, as well as audio excerpts from the notorious Oval Office taping system.

Those tapes, which Nixon envisioned as a record of his legacy, turned into the smoking gun that shot him right out of the Oval Office. ?Our Nixon? wryly acknowledges this with an excerpt where aide Alexander Butterfield first explains to Nixon how the voice-activation system works.

?Our Nixon? has glimpses like that. He rails about ?glorifying homosexuality? on ?All In the Family.? Grainy footage from his famous trip to China suggests his excitement at how he was going to amaze his friends and stun his enemies.

Seems he thought that way a lot, and soon ?Our Nixon? slides into a catalog of the neuroses that triggered his downfall.

This is all instructive and valuable. It just feels redundant.

Perhaps little or nothing on the home movies lent itself to a richer portrait. Nixon was so guarded, that?s entirely possible.

But there?s a fuller story waiting to be told.

Immigration Union Warns GOP About Legalizing Dream Act

A union representing 12,000 federal immigration workers has warned House Republicans against legalizing young undocumented workers by arguing that workers lack the resources and staffing to achieve such a task.

The union is made up of employees of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services???the agency that files immigration paperwork.

?I cannot stress enough how ill-equipped USCIS is to engage in the sort of far-reaching plans before Congress right now,? wrote President of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Council Kenneth Palinkas.

The letter was addressed to House GOP leaders, especially House NAjority Leader Eric Cantor and Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert W. Goodlatte, who said they would legalize Dream Act immigrants.

DREAMers are those who are under the age of 16 and were brought to the United States illegally. They are also considered the most sympathetic immigration cases.

The GOP is facing pressure from business owners and party donors, however, to pass a bill soon. On Tuesday, nearly 100 donors and major officials from the Bush administration wrote to House Republicans pleading for them to pass a bill legalizing illegal immigrants. If passed, the GOP could gain support from immigrant voters and help boost the economy.

Instead of complying with the Senate bill, Palinkas suggested that the House ?work with USCIS adjudicators to produce responsible reforms that enhance the integrity and security of our immigration system.?
