Perhaps the biggest issue with a lot of insurance plans is because they give a selected volume of pay for veterinary costs, nonetheless that limit simply is true with the expression in the policy. Should you have once a year coverage so you have to claim a few months prior to it finishes, you will manage to assert for two many months. If the puppy is actually unfortunate sufficient in order to develop an ailment or maybe ailment that is definitely continuing along with lasting as the name indicated, you will not always be protected through out your cat?s lifetime.
This is why dog insurance for life makes its own and it is proving being well-liked. A lifetime cover insurance policy will defend the animal up to and including specified restrict, yet this will apply for assuming that your canine everyday life. Depending on the insurance policy you go for, cut on interest rates produce an 12-monthly minimize and others can simply use above the life of the top?s. As an example, one sort of Hundeversicherung will show you what amount protect you?ve got for every single piece, just like veterinarians fees, and this will function as the control for almost any 1 year. Yearly your reduce starts yet again. So you may possibly in principle declare approximately of which volume every year but if your pet got a continuing problem. Alternatively, ones scheme might be the one which supplies second boundaries to get states which use in the lifetime of your dog.
The buying price of policies may vary a lot, this means you need to ensure you?re looking at you should for instance when you find yourself in search of the best one. There are many different issues you could get protection for, as well as the volume of include you receive may also impact the cost of your premiums. Hence, it is worthy of taking time to know variances in between amounts of handle when you compare your choices. The other ingredient that can tremendously effect on the amount of you pay will be almost any surplus built into your current scheme. That is often different for every style of include you?ve got, this means you need to comprehend the variations.
Various other critical forms of handle to check available for together with dog insurance forever policies are usually no matter whether a person?s protect includes buying every complementary remedies, therapy for every behavioural challenges, advertising costs for any dropped or stolen puppy, dying by injury or maybe condition along with cancelling involving trips. A person ingredient that you need to check meticulously intended for using dog insurance will be vacation deal with. That handles anyone to get damage to property as well as injury to men and women as a result of anything your four-legged friend does indeed. Contrary would have been to come about, the costs of your form of assert can be extremely considerable, and this facet of insurance plans are vitally important. Be certain this kind of section of your own policy carries with it an acceptable amount of deal with. A freeze bubbles behind the landlord

Mom and I recently went to Seasons 52 in Buckhead. I was very excited to try it, because I had always heard that their menu is very healthy but also delicious, and that they invented mini-desserts, which are now all the rage. Every menu item at Seasons 52 is under 475 calories ? hard to believe, but true. They use natural cooking techniques such as wood-fire grilling, brick-oven cooking and caramelizing vegetables to let the natural flavors shine through.

What did you order? How was your food?

M
enu highlights included Lamb T-Bone Chops with asparagus, truffle mashed potatoes and red wine glaze, Columbia River Steelhead Trout with spring vegetables, basmati rice and lemongrass sauce, and Strawberry Kir Royal (fresh strawberry-infused Prairie organic vodka, agave nectar, and Zardetto Prosecco).

We also enjoyed Ripe Plum Tomato Flatbread with fresh basil, herbs de Provence, Parmesan, and roasted garlic, Artichoke and Goat Cheese Flatbread with spinach, balsamic onion, and roasted peppers, Tomato and Haas Avocado Salad with arugula, balsamic glaze and grilled bruschetta, and of course the mini desserts that Seasons 52 is so famous for, including mocha macchiato, raspberry-mandarin cheesecake, chocolate peanut butter mousse, meyer lemon pound cake, fruit cup, rocky road, southern style pecan pie, key lime pie, and red velvet cake!

They will also be offering
Grilled Alaska Wild Copper River Salmon served over summer corn risotto with roasted asparagus, grilled red peppers and dill mustard sauce starting May 29th, which I will have to go back and try. Everything was fresh, healthy, and truly delicious.

Describe your impressions of the service. Was anything exceptionally good (or bad) about the quality of service you received?

Our servers were amazing, and took excellent care of us.

What do you think of the d?cor and atmosphere?

Seasons 52?s d?cor is luxe-modern with dark woods and ambient lighting. I loved it. We dined in the private

Napa room, perfect for business or family events. Any other thoughts or comments?

Their Master Sommelier, George Miliotes has a ?Drink These Before They Become Famous? list, a handpicked selection of must-try wines for the season. For instance, he suggests pairing Lioco Indica Ros?, Mendocino ?11 with the Copper River Salmon. ?It?s an all-natural wine with lovely aromas and ripe flavors of red raspberries and strawberries, the Lioco Indica Ros??s crispness and pleasantly dry finish balance well with the rich, fresh flavor of the Copper River Salmon.?

Summary

We had a wonderful time, and I would recommend Seasons 52 for any business meal or family occasion. One of my new favorite restaurants. The healthy yet delicious menu can?t be beat. They say it best ? ?Our guests feel the freedom to indulge in a complete dining experience, including our custom flatbreads and signature mini-indulgence desserts, while still feeling good about themselves and their dining choices.? This restaurant is best for (Choose all that apply)

? Good food ? Quick bite ? Family-friendly
? Outdoor ? Romantic ? Special occasion

Accessory Logitech bluetooth keyboard for ipad -works for NOTE!!!

Hi

I thought i'd share this with you.

I just bought a Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard which specifically is promoted as "FOR IPAD" for my galaxy note. It works very well indeed. No pairing issues and MOST keys are fully compatible including the shift characters on the top row and the function volume up down, media controls, home button etc.

a couple of mislabled keys Ive yet to find th ' and @ keys and ? and $ but these can be input via the virtual kb anyhow, so now biggie.

The thing types beautifully - i can touch type like with my laptop. Even some short cut keys for emails work, like ctrl N ctrl F, etc

very nice, recommended 95% i would say...

the main thing is to note this product is marketed as for IPAD but it works for android (the Note at least)

Also it has a nifty case which doubles as a stand for the note whilst typing or watching vids, etc.

Understanding and awareness as well as persistent effort comprise just a few elements that will allow you to move forward. New online marketers are usually thinking about obtaining success, not thinking about self improvement. But looking at and addressing your inner problems and issues can help lead to greater success.

Movie Review: Hysteria is Hysterical | Mom Who Runs

? Activities ? Movie Review: Hysteria is Hysterical

As you know, I?m kind of a ?contest junkie? so when I saw a tweet from?Insomnia saying they were giving away a pair of tickets to see the screening of HYSTERIA?..I was right on it.

I clicked on their facebook ?page and saw this:

Insomnia Restaurant and Lounge

5 x FREE movie passes (admit two) to see Hysteria by entertainmentone at the Varsity Monday May 14th to the most interesting answers as to why you deserve the tickets.
(Answer in the comment section below this question on the fan page.) Open to all!

This was my reply:

Vicky Weiss?um coz I like Free stuff. Does that make sense? Is that creative? LOL. Did it work? Do I win? (Im laughing as I write this)

Guess what? I won. Go figure.

I then quickly googled ?Hysteria? as I had NO IDEA what I won. (always a good strategy?NOT). I quickly read a synopsis but really went into the movie with an open mind and NO expectations.

What I discovered was a completely entertaining movie. (so entertaining that I?m blogging about it). The cast was brilliant (Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Maggie Gillenhaal) and I laughed my head off on more than one occasion. Not to mention the movie is based on a true story.

So what is the movie about? Believe it or not..it?s based on the invention of the vibrator. Please don?t judge me!! I?m reviewing the movie?.not the product!!

If you are in the mood for a funny movie ..then this is the movie for you. Note: There is no nudity and ?no swearing in this movie.

I really hope you get a chance to go see it.

Opening: May 25th!!

99 minutes

See you at the movies!!

Solar Impulse plane prepares to go intercontinental

Caroline Morley, online picture researcher

Solar-powered plane Solar Impulse is well into its first intercontinental journey from Payerne in Switzerland to Rabat in Morocco.

Solar Impulse took just over 17 hours to fly first to Madrid-Barajas airport, seen here landing at 1.28?am local time today. Following some days' technical adjustments and a change of pilots, the proptype plane is due to continue with its second leg to the 16-megawatt Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy plant near Rabat. The 800-kilometre journey is expected to take 20 hours. Slow going, perhaps, but pretty impressive for a plane that uses no fuel but sunlight.

With wings spanning 63.4?metres and covered in 12,000 solar cells, Solar Impulse can carry just one person - the pilot - but last year it completed a 26-hour flight.

The next challenge for the Solar Impulse team is a circumnavigational flight scheduled for 2014. This test flight meant the pilot was able to practise landing at an international airport as well as preparing the the team to deal with air traffic patterns.

Nuclear talks resume amid impasse worries

(AP) ? Envoys from Iran and six world powers have resumed talks over Tehran's nuclear program after issuing dueling proposals during the opening day of the negotiations in the Iraqi capital.

The meetings spilled into a second day in apparent efforts to avoid an impasse that could derail the most promising nuclear dialogue with Iran in years.

On the table Thursday is an incentive package by the six-nation group ? the permanent U.N. Security Council members plus Germany ? that seeks to halt the most sensitive part of Iran's nuclear fuel production. Iran put forward a counterproposal after saying it wants the U.S. and Europe to ease sanctions.

The West and allies fear Iran's nuclear program could eventually produce atomic weapons. Iran insists its reactors are only for energy and research.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Talks between Iran and six world powers snagged Wednesday over dueling proposals concerning Tehran's nuclear program, a tug-of-war that pits international concerns about the Islamic Republic's potential to build atomic weapons against enforcing crippling sanctions on its people.

The daylong back-and-forth in Baghdad focused largely on whether the current enrichment level of Iran's uranium production is a red line the U.S. and other powers will not permit for fear it could become warhead-grade material.

At stake is the threat an Iran armed with nuclear weapons could pose to its neighbors. The U.S. and Israel have indicated readiness to attack Iran if diplomacy and sanctions fail to curb its nuclear program. Both suspect that Iran is aiming to build nuclear weapons, and Israel believes it would be a prime target.

Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.

The impasse threatened to dissolve the most hopeful chance of detente in nearly a decade, although both sides agreed to continue negotiations into Thursday.

"The international community hasn't done something wrong here ? we haven't created a suspicious nuclear weapons program that the world doesn't know the answers to. Iran has," a senior U.S. official said early Thursday after the grueling day of discussions that, at times, appeared on the verge of breaking down. "They are the party who has acted to create concerns in the international community."

However, the official said, the negotiations remain in the beginning of a careful and drawn-out process. "We certainly are not at the end of it," said the U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the talks more candidly.

Western negotiators presented a package Wednesday that called on Tehran to place a freeze on its enrichment of uranium to 20 percent, considered a short technical step away from bomb grade. In exchange they offered benefits, including medical isotopes, some nuclear safety cooperation and spare parts for civilian airliners, much needed in Iran.

But they snubbed Iranian calls for an immediate easing of significant economic sanctions imposed on Tehran for flouting U.N. Security Council resolutions that demand the suspension of all enrichment.

Iran brought a potent bargaining chip to the table, tentatively agreeing on the eve of the negotiations to allow U.N. inspectors into a military complex suspected of conducting nuclear arms-related tests.

The gesture was seen as an attempt to head off painful July 1 sanctions on its oil exports to lucrative European markets. U.S. and European measures have targeted Iran's oil exports ? its chief revenue source ? and effectively blocked the country from international banking networks.

Diplomats from the six world powers have refused to consider postponing the new harsher sanctions, although the U.S. official said some restrictions could be removed as part of an agreement.

The talks are seen only as a small step forward in a delicate negotiating process that likely will unfold over months. That would likely bring objections from Israel, which claims that Iran is only trying to buy time to keep its nuclear fuel labs in full operation.

But a delay could allow U.S. and European allies to tone down threats of military action ? despite calls Wednesday from a hawkish alliance of U.S. senators who urged negotiators to take a hard line against Iran "to leave no doubt that the window for diplomacy is closing."

"The Iranian regime's long record of deceit and defiance should make us extremely cautious about its willingness to engage in good-faith diplomacy," Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, and Independent Joe Lieberman, wrote in Wednesday's editions of The Wall Street Journal. "The U.S. must be prepared, if necessary, to use military force to stop Iran from getting a nuclear-weapons capability."

The Baghdad meetings opened with the so-called 5+1 group ? the permanent U.N. Security Council members, the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France, plus Germany ? putting forward a proposal aimed at putting a cap on Iran's growing stockpile of uranium enriched to 20 percent. Iran says the uranium is for fuel for medical reactors, but Western diplomats say Tehran already has many times more than it needs, and that moving from 20 percent to bomb-grade purity is a relatively quick and easy process.

The U.S. official said it is too early in the negotiations to discuss whether world powers would agree to let Tehran maintain a lesser percentage of uranium enrichment. "It's premature to have that discussion," the official said.

Mike Mann, spokesman for the head of the European Union delegation that is leading the talks, suggested that any rollback in sanctions was unlikely in the Baghdad talks. He called the upcoming sanctions a "matter of the law and they will come into force when they come into force."

Iran offered a counterproposal that includes "nuclear and non-nuclear issues," according to the member of its negotiating team. The official would not discuss details of the plan but said it was to be discussed in private meetings with diplomats from the European Union and China, an Iranian ally.

Iran's top officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have repeatedly said that Iran does not seek nuclear arms and have called such weapons against Islamic principles.

During a visit to western Iran on Wednesday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad evoked Khamenei's belief that "production and use of weapons of mass destruction is forbidden" by Islam.

"There is no room for these weapons in Iran's defense doctrine," he said at a gathering to commemorate victims of Iraqi chemical weapons during the 1980-88 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Even so, Iran is sticking to its right to enrich uranium as a signatory of U.N. nuclear treaties. The high-enriched uranium is far above the level needed for energy-producing reactors, but is used in medical research. Iran claims its nuclear program is only for electricity and medical applications.

Earlier this week, Tehran tentatively agreed to allow the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency inspect the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran. That's where the U.N. believes Iran ran explosive tests in 2003 needed to set off a nuclear charge. Tehran says Parchin is not a nuclear site.

The Iranian envoys entered the talks sorely wanting to lessen, or at least delay, an EU decision to cut all crude oil imports from Iran that are set to take effect July 1. The 27-nation EU accounts for just 18 percent of Iran's total oil exports.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate backed proposals for further sanctions on Iran, including requiring companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges to disclose any Iran-related business. U.S. and European measures already have targeted Iran's oil exports ? its chief revenue source ? and effectively blocked the country from international banking networks.

Oil fell to a seven-month low near $91 a barrel Wednesday on hopes of progress in the talks.

If the July 1 sanctions start as planned, Iran's Economy Minister Shamseddin Hossein predicted they will backfire, warning this week that Europe should expect a crude oil price of $160 a barrel should the embargo remain in place.

That puts a ticking clock on a negotiations process that, for all its bluffing and brinksmanship, may drag on "for several weeks, if not for several months," said Bruno Tertrais, senior research fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris.

"There will be incentives to not rush toward any kind of deal," Tertrais said.

How Gaming Can Deliver Your Sustainability Targets ...

To compete with rivals, it is a good idea to think ahead. Even though green legislation affecting business is relatively new, it pays for companies to review their green strategy to protect themselves from penalties as new laws are enforced. But on a practical level, how do you make sustainability a priority?

At your weekly team meeting, it would be safe to assume sustainability targets would not be the first thing debated. But if green issues are to have a large impact inside the boardroom, it is at this grassroots level that sustainability needs to be discussed. As difficult as it may sound, there are mechanisms many of us have experienced in our younger years that can unite a workforce towards a common green purpose.

Game mechanics, the psychology behind many pastimes and games, provides the tools which can help bring a large audience to address a concern. Regarded by many as the next great thing, the concept has been with the human race since its existence. From an early age, people learn and then master a variety of riddles, board, computer, and physical games. A microcosm of society, games teach children about structure, the rules of the game are learned, cheaters are marginalized.

Modern software makes it relatively easy to bring game mechanics into companies, and terms related to gaming are prevalent in the business world, such as ?competition? and ?rewards.? Gaming shows no sign of becoming yesterday?s news, either. Figures suggest that today half a billion gamers are online per day and according to Gartner 50 per cent of business applications will be gamified by 2013.

Below are five topics on how game mechanics should be used to maximize the talent in your workforce to hit ambitious sustainability goals:

Playing the game: Staff globally must be responsible for their sustainability performance management by setting aggressive goals and managing them in real-time, across the business. By performing well and not letting down their peers, the employee maintains his/her status amongst them. Now, there is technology available which enables users to find out what their individual green ranking is compared to others and provides tips to decrease water, gas and electricity usage.

Gaming is predominantly social and there is no better way in building rapport between staff by conquering challenges together. The thrill of beating their neighbors will bring endorsement from employees.

Talking company currency: Rewards are there to encourage high achieving employees to do even better. Innovate and reward successful employees using company currency whether it is a day off, a financial bonus or a spa day. Additional research from Ernst and Young adds weight to the long-term benefits to the brand as it suggests sustainable companies are more attractive to investors. Risk management plays a large part in investor confidence, so put any potential risk with the environment to rest now.

6,500 reasons why sustainability helps the balance sheet: Think about financial currency. Reducing energy usage leads to cost savings to the entire business of 10 per cent. In the UK, forthcoming research suggests the individual employee costs businesses nationwide an additional ?6,500 on top of salary and tax. The invisible costs which are not taken in account are company subsidized business travel and energy used at work. Impetus must be focused on changing employee behavior so they treat energy usage at work as they would treat it at home.

Right here, right now: To avoid risk and falling foul of environmental legislations, understanding what is being used where is crucial to locate potential savings. Look into technology which captures and reports energy usage and emissions data swiftly and precisely. Use software to provide up-to-date, accurate measurements on internal operations. When these statistics are collected, a pro-environmental strategy can be designed and objectives distributed to each team, department or section. There is great value in having feedback in real time as enhancements can be made as soon as possible.

Press home the business case of sustainability: The hardest part is winning over the person with final authority to sign-off on resources. Sustainability has been previously considered as a ?soft? topic, but with its importance to the economic stability of businesses coupled with the current economic climate, this topic cannot be ignored any longer.

Top-down initiatives fail to engage the workforce due to the lack of understanding and ultimately the feeling of being forced to follow orders. A more progressive way is to change behavior in a bottom-up approach. In that way, employees become spokespeople for the green issue and able to educate the board on how technology can provide benefits to all sides.

Look into saving water, light, heat use as they yield faster results than restructuring the entire business. Rather than losing employees, use game mechanics to encourage the whole organization towards meeting green objectives.

Peter Grant is CEO of CloudApps, an award-winning provider of sustainability and energy management software, enabling visionary organizations to make exceptional cost savings and meet sustainability targets by aligning the entire enterprise behind corporate sustainability goals. The software suite solves the sustainability challenge by connecting the sustainability efforts of employees on the front-line, or ?bottom-up?, with the ?top-down? commitments made by management.

Perennial House Hunter Kelsey Grammer Lists in Holmby Hills ...

Tuesday, May 22, 2012, by Rob Bear

Back in 2010, Frasier star Kelsey Grammer spent an entire summer hunting around NYC for a flashy apartment before finally settling on Jean Nouvel's Vision Machine. Now, the fickle TV vet and his fourth wife are allegedly relocating back to the West Coast, but not to Grammer's old, very private mansion in the Holmby Hills. That one has recently been listed on the open market?but with limited photography?for an eye-popping $18M. If it sells for close to that price, the walled and gated estate, with seven bedrooms and nine baths spread over 10,600 square feet, will be enough to cover the purchase of both the glassy NYC spread ($6.5M) and a recently-acquired L.A. home, for which Grammer paid another $6.5M.

Goal is to detect most serious cases of deadly lung disease earlier

SAN ANTONIO (May 22, 2012) An international task force this week unveiled a revised definition of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a disease first recognized during the Vietnam War in casualties with limb injuries who had trouble breathing.

The new definition includes a distinction between the most serious cases of ARDS and cases that are less advanced, said Antonio Anzueto, M.D., of UT Medicine San Antonio, a pulmonologist who served on the ARDS Definition Task Force. The guidelines are based on evidence from data of more than 4,000 patients with ARDS, including 200 from San Antonio.

Awareness that ARDS is starting

The guidelines, called the Berlin Definition, are described in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This paper represents a more vigilant approach to identification and diagnosis of ARDS, which doesn't necessarily begin in the lungs, Dr. Anzueto said. "This new stratification of severity will make clinicians aware the process is starting and interventions have to be applied almost immediately to prevent the disease from progressing," he said.

UT Medicine is the clinical practice of the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Science Center San Antonio. Dr. Anzueto, professor of medicine at the Health Science Center and section chief of pulmonary diseases at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, participated in an ARDS network established by the National Institutes of Health and has studied the disease for 15 years.

'White lung'

Vietnam casualties presented with lungs that were white on X-rays, and an early name for ARDS was "white lung." As many as 8 in every 10 patients died with the disease. In the 1980s a consensus conference was convened to clinically define ARDS and the research network began. New understandings about managing the disease have cut the mortality rate by more than half.

"We are learning that even though patients are surviving ARDS there are long-term consequences," Dr. Anzueto said. "Generalized weakness, emotional abnormalities and post-traumatic stress disorder are among these."

Data for review

University Hospital, a level one trauma center in San Antonio and teaching hospital of the Health Science Center, is a leading hospital for treatment of the disease. Dr. Anzueto's group contributed data to the revised definition from patients managed in the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and University Hospital.

"This is evidence-based; it is not our opinion sitting at a table smoking cigars," Dr. Anzueto said.

Factors hinder care

ARDS continues to be difficult to treat, he said, in part because conditions such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease are impacting the disease in many patients.

The JAMA article coincides with the panel's presentation of the Berlin Definition on May 23 at the American Thoracic Society 2012 Conference in San Francisco.

Eczema Natural Cures ? You Are What You Eat ... - Health and Fitness

Posted by Diana on May 22nd, 2012 10:05 AM | Eczema??

I?m a big believer that for eczema of nature cures are the way to go. It makes sense in so many ways ? if your question is basically an allergic reaction to something ? what one. is what eczema is ? why would you put some chemical union into your body or onto your hide that you could possibly be even greater degree of allergic to? And if you have damaged skin as it is, why danger damaging it even more by smearing rough chemicals on it?

I?m not saying medicine and drug therapy doesn?t hold its place in the world, but if I have the chance to ascendency a health condition naturally, I?ll take that above pill-popping any day. Natural treatment for eczema won?t use rough ingredients, so you won?t get the nasty side effects that things like steroid creams watch to bring along.

I should say at the outset in this place that there is no real cure for eczema, of nature or otherwise, but what you can do is treat the problem, create changes to your diet, your lifestyle, and how you touch the situation so that you control your eczema in lieu of your eczema controlling you.

There are fulness of simple, natural ways to help use your eczema. I?ve broken this into separate posts to keep each of them brief and readable. In this post we?ll deal through four things you should consider in your diet:

Trench your Trigger ? find out what triggers your eczema and get it out of your diet. If you are corrosive something that makes your eczema flair up, close eating it ? simple, right?. But the problem is, it isn?t light to work out what food is causing this. More common culprits: dairy, acidic foods, spirits of wine, caffeine, and any food high in preservatives.Drink lots of irrigate regularly ? hydrates and moistens your hide. Two liters a day is what the doctors suggest, al~ more than that wouldn?t injure. Remember, the basic problem here is damaged hide, so you want to help it become as healthy as potential, and the first step to that is moisture.Eat your yogurt ? Probiotics are the advantageous bacteria found in your digestive region that fight the bad bacteria and strengthen your immune a whole . Eating your probiotics can help bring the development of eczema, something especially advantageous for children. Remember though that for more people, dairy may be a trigger for their eczema, so you may deficiency to look for your probiotics fix elsewhere.Addition ? specifically, vitamins C and E are a couple of supplements that hold anti-oxidant properties that relieve heal damaged skin.

I won?t debate that the steroid creams that doctors direct work, but I have found that for my eczema of nature cures have always been as advantageous as the prescribed medicine in the long run, and they create me feel safer. So make these changes to your diet and shrink feeling better.

Next set of eczema of nature cure suggestions? Soothing pastes and oils!

Kevin P. Chavous: College Readiness Is More Than Academics

Donald was a smart boy with potential. He graduated from high school with honors and had ambitions to succeed, but sadly he never made it to college. Donald's problem was not one of academic deficiency. He didn't get into trouble. He didn't mess with drugs or break the law. Simply put, Donald had no support at home. His mother was an alcoholic who referred to Donald as her "problem child" because he reminded her of his father. Even from the beginning, his fate was tainted.

Whereas most parents would be thrilled to have a son with such drive and determination, Donald's mother offered no guidance into navigating the real world beyond high school.? She provided very little in terms of mentoring and supporting her son. In short, Donald's motivation to succeed was overshadowed by his lack of parental involvement and his inability to take on the real world challenges associated with college.

College readiness is a top priority of the Obama Administration but what does it really mean to be "college ready"? It's not simply enough to prepare our kids academically; we must also prepare them with the life skills to successfully navigate the complex college processes associated with admission and financial aid, assist them in developing an understanding of college culture, and the ability to maintain adult relationships.

You see, while it is important to graduate with a diploma, high school students must also be prepared to face all of the challenges associated with taking that next step. Donald, like so many other kids, lacked the parental support, teacher encouragement, and personal resilience he needed to embrace college. In fact, even some supportive parents are intimidated by the college application and financial aid grind.

More often than not, the kids who attend college have supportive mentors in their lives that instill in them not only the importance of education, but also the necessary values such as persistence and patience and also how to navigate through the college admission process. Every child deserves a mentor. And, every student deserves a chance to enter college with the skill set needed to be successful.

In the 1980s, the United States led the world among 25- to 34-year-old degree holders. Today, we rank just 12th -- with only about half of students enrolling in higher education ultimately earning degrees.? And the U.S. ranks just 21st in high school completion and 15th in college completion.
?
Folks, the truth is in the numbers. These statistics are proof that we have got to do a better job at preparing our young students for the future challenges associated with not just college, but life.
?
Enrolling students in higher education is one challenge, but making sure they can thrive academically once they get there is another issue we've got to be willing to address. We have to do much better job of aligning high school and college curriculums so that more students leave K-12 ready to do college work. We've got to prepare them through AP courses, career counseling, and on the job training. We've got to remove the training wheels and set our students in motion to have an academic experience founded on successful habits and skills. We must challenge them, encourage them, and provide them with the tools they need to succeed.

For students like Donald, who are not getting the mentoring they need at home, there is the critical relationships that are formed within the schools. Between teachers, coaches, and principals, students should have the opportunity to reach out for assistance from these educational leaders. However, at the average high school, there is only one guidance counselor for every 457 students, which means students typically get around twenty minutes of counseling a year. Today's guidance counselors lack adequate time needed to advise students, assist with the applications and selection process, and answer important questions. These guidance counselors may be a student's only opportunity to engage in a conversation about their future.

From filling out applications, to getting transcripts and recommendations, let's admit the whole process can be overwhelming. Our kids must be taught how to navigate all of the challenges associated with college. Together, as leaders, parents, and mentors, we must teach our kids that college is, in fact, a realistic option.?

Yes, Donald was resilient and smart. He transcended all that he had to endure, studied hard and graduated from high school. Ultimately, he made the decision to enlist in the United States Army instead of college. Serving his country is indeed something he should be very proud of. Though I can't help but wonder what would have become of this bright student's future if only he had been prepared for the real world challenges associated with applying for, entering, and succeeding in higher education.
