A catastrophic event such as a terrorist attack, a natural disaster, or market collapse often strikes twice. There is the damage caused by the event itself, as lives are lost or left in ruin. But there is also the second act, catalyzed by our response to the catastrophic event. This second act has the potential to cause just as much damage as the first.

In the year following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there were approximately 1,600 more traffic fatalities in the United States than expected. This figure suggests the possibility that fear may have been a strong motivator for many people, leading them to choose driving over flying. This change in behavior, motivated by fear, may have ultimately led to additional deaths through traffic fatalities.

But fear does not tell the whole story. As Wolfgang Gaissmaier and Gerd Gigerenzer of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany, observe, the changes in driving behavior observed after 9/11 varied widely across different regions of the United States and did not just occur in those states closest to the attacks where fear was presumably strongest.

Gaissmaier and Gigerenzer hypothesized that another factor might have played a central role: driving opportunity. While fear provides a motivational explanation, in order for people to substitute driving for flying there had to be an environmental structure that allowed fear to manifest in a behavior change.

The researchers explore this hypothesis in a new research article to be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

They collected data on the number of miles driven and the number of traffic fatalities per month from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. They also gathered data on fear and driving opportunity. They used proximity to New York City to get an approximate measure of post-9/11 fear, as previous research had shown that proximity was linked with substantial stress reactions after the attacks. To measure driving opportunity, they assessed the length of nationally significant highways in each state in the National Highway System, divided by the number of state inhabitants and they also looked at the number of car registrations per inhabitant.

The results of the analyses show that people did in fact drive more following 9/11: Across all states, the average monthly increase in miles driven per inhabitant was 27.2 miles in the three months following the attacks. This increase was significantly greater than that observed in the same three-month period in the five years leading up to 2001.

Interestingly, people who were closer to New York City showed only a slight increase in driving. Increase in miles driven was strongly associated, however, with greater driving opportunity. Most importantly, increased driving was associated with an increase in traffic fatalities. These findings suggest that fear can lead people to engage in potentially dangerous behaviors, such as increased driving, but that understanding fear is not enough.

"To be able to foresee where the secondary effects of catastrophic events could have fatal consequences, we need to look at the environmental structures that allow fear to actually manifest in dangerous behaviors."

According to Gaissmaier, understanding citizens' behavior as a function of both the mind and the environment ultimately allows for two routes toward behavior change: altering people's minds (through education or awareness campaigns) or altering people's environments.

September is Cancer Awareness Month For Five Cancers ...

(by 23andMe)

(by 23andMe)

September is Cancer Awareness Month for: Gynecologic cancer, Ovarian cancer, Leukemia and Lymphoma, Prostate cancer, and Thyroid cancer. Know the facts about each, and think about taking some of the suggested actions to support awareness.

As?the infographic shows?Cancer touches everyone. It?s important that we take the opportunity these Awareness months offer to learn what preventative measures can be taken, find out more about the illnesses, ?and discover what we can do to further the causes of the illnesses that affect so many. And here we?re lucky enough to have a month five-deep in awareness.

  • Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month

Gynecologic cancers start in a woman?s reproductive organs. There are five main types:

  1. Cervical. This can be found through routine screening with Pap test checks, which are quite effective in both prevention and in finding cancer early enough to cure it.
  2. Uterine. This is sometimes called Endometrial cancer because the most common type of uterine cancer occurs in the inner lining, known as the endometrium. This usually occurs after menopause, with vaginal bleeding?as its?most common symptom. See other symptoms to watch for.
  3. Vaginal? An uncommon?cancer, it represents only 1% of the gynecologic?cancers. That doesn?t mean it?s not something to look out for, though. Its?five-year survival rate is only around 50%. [Note that that?number goes up to 84% if it's found before it has spread.]??Early vaginal cancer isn?t too symptomatic, but as it progresses these are some signs to look out for.
  4. Vulvar? An uncommon cancer, it mainly affects women over 50?and is almost never found in females under 20. This occurs on the outer surface of the female?s genitalia, usually forming as a lump or sore on the vulva that might lead to itching or pain. You can be alert to the cancer?s presence by looking out for these signs.
  5. Ovarian?Of?these 5 cancers, ovarian?the eighth most common cancer in the US., is the deadliest?and very difficult to detect.?It is separated out from the other 4 in having its own name attached to the month.

Note: The CDC?s site ??Inside Knowledge?: About Gynecologic Cancer? has downloads with details of each of the cancers.

Most common female cancers?by mortality (2008)

In honor of Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, consider:

1. Donating?to the Women?s Cancer Network.
2. If you haven?t had your screening recently, book an appointment with the gynecologist?today.

  • Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month

Leukemia is?that affects the blood and bone marrow, the spongy center of bones where our blood cells are formed.

It is estimated that by the end of 2012 there will be 41,150 new cases of leukemia in the U.S., and there will be 23,540 deaths from the disease.

Lymphoma affects the lymphatic system, which is the network of vessels?that transports the?infection-fighting white blood cells, called lymphocytes, throughout the body.

It is the third most common childhood cancer.

Lymphomas are usually divided?into two types: Hodgkin?s lymphomas (formerly known as Hodgkin?s disease)?and ?non-Hodgkin?s lymphomas.

Hodgkin?s lymphoma can frequently be cured or controlled for many years in the majority of cases. The five-year relative survival rate for Hodgkin?s lymphoma is about 85 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Non-Hodgkin?s?lymphomas are more difficult to treat, and the course of the cancer can vary widely from person to person. Overall, the 5-year relative survival rate for patients with non-Hodgkin? s? lymphoma is 63% and the 10-year relative survival rate is 51%.

A Canadian-based organization called the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) offers resources and information on their website.

For Awareness month you might decide to:

1. Volunteer for LLS?(help is needed in areas as wide-ranging as the following:fundraising events such as Team In Training, Light The Night Walk and School & Youth Programs, office support, donor development, patient services and family support groups, education programs, advocacy to local legislators, corporate sponsorships, and expos and health fairs.
2. Advocate for funding for research (the site provides the resources to make this process seamless).
3. [This one seemed easy enough, so I snuck it in here:]??Shop the LLS e-Store, where 20% of your purchase?price is donated to LLS.

  • Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month:?Ovarian cancer is the most deadly of all the gynecologic cancers. The National Cancer Institute estimated 22,280 new cases in the US in? 2012, with 15,500 deaths.

However, if it is?detected early and treated properly, survival rates increase to over 90 percent.

There are very few ways to decrease your chances of getting ovarian cancer, although having had children or using birth control pills for more than 5 years may help. And the symptoms are frequently easily confused with numerous other disorders. Being aware of them is critcal.

See the NCI?s ?ovarian cancer? home page for details on types of ovarian cancer, research trials, treatments, literature, and statistics.

Ideas for what to do for ovarian awareness?

1. Join the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund ?(OCRF) on their facebook page
2. Visit www.lorealcolorofhope.com?to learn about L?Or?al Paris Color of Hope, OCRF?s long-time corporate partner.? Buy special Color of Hope products, share your stories, and learn more about their commitment to fighting ovarian cancer.?
3. Call or write to a friend suffering from ovarian cancer, telling her you?re thinking of her, and asking if there?s something you can do to help.
4. Donate?to OCRF to help funding of research to find a method of early detective (and one day a cure) for ovarian cancer.

    • Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is the single most common cancer in American men. Unfortunately, there are no warning signs or symptoms of early prostate cancer. Once a malignant tumor causes swelling in the prostate gland, or the cancer metastasizes, the following symptoms, listed by WebMD, may be present as a result of tumor blockage:

    • A frequent need to urinate, especially at night
    • Difficulty starting or stopping a stream of urine
    • A weak or interrupted urinary stream
    • Leaking of urine when laughing or coughing
    • Inability to urinate standing up
    • A painful or burning sensation during urination or ejaculation
    • Blood in urine or semen

The most well-known prostate screening?test, the prostate-specific antigen test (PSA) is supposed to look for signs of cancer, but its usefulness?has been debated. The subject should be addressed with your health care professional, as there are pros and cons on each side of the issue.

In fact, prostate cancer is probably the most controversial cancer overall, both in diagnosis and in treatment?a dubious distinction, I?d say

According to the most recent data, when including all men with prostate cancer, those with the?disease?have a:

    • Relative 5-year survival rate of nearly 100%
    • Relative 10-year survival rate?of 98%
    • 15-year relative survival rate?of 91%

However, it is important to keep in mind its potential risk.? If the?cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, the relative 5-year survival rate drops to a devastating 29%.

Due, though,?to the late age at which it occurs, and positive survival rates, most people die with the cancer, rather than from it.

In honor of prostate cancer awareness month, consider doing the following:

    1. If you haven?t been screened for prostate cancer, make an appointment to do so?today!
    2. Educate yourself about prostate cancer treatment options?hopefully long before you use that information.
    3. Visit the Prostate Cancer Foundation site?for important information?on the disease, the latest in the news, new developments in prostate cancer research?and more.

      • Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month

Thyroid cancer is the fastest increasing cancer in both men and women. Thyroid?cancer starts in the thyroid gland, located in the front of your lower neck. It can occur at any age, but if detected early most treatments will work.

Ironically, it is one of the few cancers with increased incidence rates of death in recent years.

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 56,460 new cases of thyroid cancer in the U.S. in 2012. Of these new cases, about 43,210 will occur in women and about 13,250 in men. About 1,780 people (1,000 women and 780 men) will die of thyroid cancer in 2012.

Signs of thyroid cancer include coughing, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the neck and trouble breathing.

The Thyroid Cancer Survivors? Association?s website provides a host of useful information. Just to name a few services they provide: you can?find support groups, get detailed information on the types, stages and overview of treatment recommendations, locate?current clinical trials, locate a whole host of links that provide information, support, resources, etc, and download a low iodine cookbook.

      Ideas for Awareness month?

      1. Become a member?of the Thyroid Cancer Survivors? Association.
      2. Volunteer for the organization.
      3. Raise awareness?and the site provides numerous resources to help in this endeavor.

It?s time for awareness?in any way that works for you. Visit a friend, write a letter to an editor, write a post, re-blog a post, talk about an experience. You?ve got a month?don?t let it pass you by.

You can buy only what week is available so that you take to your needs at this time every year, you have the same unit every year, if you pay extra sites, go with a different owner and they are limited to the places that have to share agreements with your timeshare group.

Timeshare companies were money hand over fist provides a way for ordinary people to have a place where she could each year, or trade with other holiday if they wanted to go elsewhere. Now is the flower with people losing their jobs and homes, disabled the rose of timeshare owners. What are the problems and people can still get good deals for holiday?

What to the alternatives for someone, who a great holiday experience and not be burdened with a mortgage? A new industry travel has grown in the last few years travel and vacation clubs. These companies provide the same advantages to travel to do as warehouse shopping clubs such as Sams and Costco for retail items. 8 hurt when car crashes into crowd near LA school

(AP) ? A car plowed into a group of parents and children outside a South Los Angeles elementary school Wednesday afternoon, and eight people were hurt, six of them seriously, firefighters said.

At least some of the people injured outside Main Street Elementary were children, though it was not immediately clear how many, city fire spokesman Erik Scott said.

The crash occurred at about 2:30 p.m., just after school had let out for the day.

The school is about five miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Scott said it was unclear whether the driver is among the injured, under arrest, or being sought.

Helicopter footage from NBC4 showed a child in a pink T-shirt being loaded into an ambulance and a Hello Kitty backpack lying in the street nearby. The footage showed a silver sedan on a sidewalk and a black car on the street next to it, both draped in police tape.

Feinstein Wants to Know Why California's Gas Prices are So High

According to U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), California now has the highest gas prices in the continental U.S. On Tuesday, she wrote to the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission to ask for an investigation into why that is the case. Here are the details.

      * Californians have faced rapid price increases -- 30 cents per gallon -- since Aug. 6, the senator stated. These increases are more than double the national average over the same time period.

      * On Aug. 6, a fire at the Chevron refinery in Richmond, Calif., resulted in reduced refining capacity. However, Feinstein pointed out, the incident did not result in a reduction of gasoline supply that would justify a price increase. In fact, she stated, the state's refineries were producing six million barrels of gasoline per week before the fire and were nearing 6.8 million barrels for the week after the fire.

      * According to Feinstein, gasoline sales in California have fallen from 2006 levels of 8.5 million gallons per day to 4.9 million gallons per day this year. California has been exporting fuel and refineries have been operating well below their capacity, the senator stated.

      * Despite the excess in capacity, California's gasoline prices remain consistently higher than other western states. The senator reported that gasoline was 14 cents more expensive per gallon than other western states in 2006 and is now 26 cents per gallon higher.

      * Feinstein points to a 2009 Government Accountability Office analysis that revealed higher wholesale gasoline prices in highly concentrated areas such as San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles. "This study suggests that refineries and fuel marketers in California have accumulated the market power necessary to move prices and maximize profits at the expense of California's consumers," she stated.

      * The senator asserts that high gasoline prices are "contributing to significant economic pain" and are jeopardizing the state's economic recovery. According to Feinstein, a report by the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business stated that every penny increase in gas results in a billion dollars being pulled from the U.S. economy each year.

      * The Federal Trade Commission prohibits a single actor or a few collusive actors from setting the market price, Feinstein stated, which is why the senator wants the commission to investigate the prices in California.

      * On Monday, the Associated Press reported that U.S. gas prices have risen by an average of 7 cents over the past two weeks. The average price of a gallon of regular costs $3.76. In California, the senator reported, gasoline was averaging $4.09. However, according to Feinstein, the price of gas in the state has reached $4.21 per gallon.

      Beltre lifts Rangers past Rays

      Associated Press Sports

      updated 10:17 p.m. ET Aug. 27, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, including the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning, to lead the Texas Rangers to a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

Elvis Andrus scored on Beltre's single to give the AL West leaders a series-opening win. Nelson Cruz also homered and Mike Olt added an RBI for Texas.

Derek Holland (9-6) got the win, giving up five runs - three earned - on six hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Relievers Alexi Ogando and Mike Adams, and closer Joe Nathan struck out six of the nine hitters they faced in working perfect seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Nathan earned his 23rd consecutive save opportunity and 26th this season.

Tampa Bay ace David Price (16-5) snapped a stretch of 12 consecutive quality starts in which he had pitched at least seven innings. The lefty, who entered with a majors-low 2.28 ERA and tied for the league lead for victories, didn't make it to the fifth, giving up six runs on 10 hits in four innings.

In eight career regular-season starts against the Rangers, Price is 1-3 with a 6.04 ERA. In four starts at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, his ERA is 10.26.

The Rays entered with the AL's best road record (35-27), but found they were no match for Beltre.

Beltre, who was selected AL player of the week after a game of three home runs and another in which he hit for the cycle, is hitting .385 with six homers and 13 RBIs in his last eight games.

Beltre, who reached base a fourth time with a walk in the seventh, and Cruz had back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the second to erase a 2-0 deficit - the first time Price has allowed consecutive homers in his career.

Olt's groundout to shortstop Ben Zobrist drove in the Rangers' third run.

Beltre's double with no outs in the third scored Elvis Andrus and Josh Hamilton to make the score 5-3. Price was able to limit the damage by retiring the next three hitters on two groundouts and a strikout of Geovany Soto.

B.J. Upton's run-scoring triple and Zobrist's RBI single tied the score at 5-all in the fifth.

An error led to two unearned runs for the Rays in the first inning.

Upton reached base on a fielding miscue by Andrus at short, who then dropped a potential double play relay on the next hitter, Ben Zobrist, who reached on a fielder's choice.

Evan Longoria, who was 2 for 4, then took a 3-2 pitch deep off the left-field foul pole for a home run.

The Rays' Nos. 5-9 hitters went 0 for 18 with eight strikeouts.

Notes: With the home run and a single, Longoria is hitting .435 (10 for 23) lifetime against Rangers starter Holland. ... Beltre has had 25 or more home runs in seven seasons. ... Price led the major leagues in ERA and tied for most wins entering Monday's game. In the last 50 years, only eight pitchers Sandy Koufax (1963, `65-66), Jim Palmer (1975), Ron Guidry (1978), Dwight Gooden (1985), Bret Saberhagen (1989), Greg Maddux (1995), Pedro Martinez (1999) and Johan Santana (2006) have finished the season leading the majors in both categories - and all have won the Cy Young.

      Avoid tweet at London Olympics

LONDON Sports fans attending the London Olympics were told to avoid non-urgent text messages and tweets during events because overloading of data networks was affecting television coverage. Commentators on men?s cycling road race were unable to tell viewers how far the leaders were ahead of the chasing pack because data could not get through from the GPS satellite navigation system travelling with the cyclists.

An explosion in the use of mobile phones to access the Internet and take and send photos and video has made London 2012 the first true ?social media Games?, but also put pressure on the networks. Government Rebates for Lighting Retrofit ... - Industrial Mechanical

There is an age old saying ?future holds bright?. No we are not here to make astrological predictions, but your future and that of the entire human race holds bright if we save energy. Since the start of the Industrial Revolution we have consumed bulk of the planet?s natural energy resources. Our usage and dependency on non-renewable resources has reached alarming proportions threatening our future.

Government has taken steps to reward those who are making their bid to conserve the depleting energy resources. Ontario Power Authority along with Eastern Ontario Power has launched their electricity reduction incentive program which will encourage the use of energy saving measures. However you need to keep in mind that the lighting incentiveswill not be granted to any new project and are specifically made for retrofitting in existing structures.

      Applying for the Grant

To take home the advantages of ERIP a general application needs to be submitted. A prescriptive worksheet containing the sum of the incentives for various retrofitting such as light fittings, motors, agri-business and air conditioning should also be mentioned. The worksheet should clearly specify the manufacturer and the model numbers that have been or will be used in the project. Such documents as purchase invoices mentioning the quantity and the model number, proof of payment or an estimate for the purchased equipment and the manufacturer?s technical specification sheets (which will testify that the equipment meet the directives of ERIP) should be furnished.

      Options while Applying

Applications for the government lighting rebates can be made prior or after retrofitting. There are two options in the project approval form for Electricity Reduction Incentive Program ? Pre-Approval (submission of the form before purchase and installation) and Payment Option (submission of the ERIP form after purchase and installation of power saving measures).

The Pre-approval option requires you to provide all details seeking permission from the authorities to start off the project. After the project is completed all the purchase and installation invoices will be scrutinized and at times a site visit may also be on the cards. The applications for lighting incentives will be prioritized according to date of submission, their in-service date as also the amount of savings done by the project.

To receive government lighting rebates with the Payment option you will have to submit all the purchase and installation invoices which will be reviewed by the authorities. Bear in mind that the application must be mailed to ERIP authorities within 60 days of the installation of measures for power savings after which your case will not be considered.

      Eligibility Issues

Installation of various power saving measures are included in the eligibility list for government lighting rebates. Retrofitting work areas with fluorescent lighting systems (T8, T5, Cls), metal halide lighting systems, Occupancy sensors and LED ?EXIT? signs makes you eligible for rebates. Installation of motors (three phase premium efficiency motors within range of 1-200 hp), cooling equipment (unitary AC up to 25 tons which are qualified by Energy Star or CEE) and Agribusiness utilities such as 24? ventilation fans, swine creep heat and controls and livestock waterers may also apply for lighting grants.

Easing Housing Transitions for Seniors | Prudential Howe & Doherty ...

There comes a time when families start to think about senior members moving. Factors such as retirement, finances, lifestyle, health or the distance between family members are just a few of the reasons why seniors may decide to relocate.

Moving is a big decision especially when a senior has lived in one place for a very long time. Many things must be considered, including access to health care, recreation, social activities and practical concerns, such as grocery stores, libraries, climate, etc.

      Access to Quality Care

For many seniors access to health care or options for health care assistance is the primary reason for moving. When considering options it is important look at the short-term solutions, but also consider long term scenarios. Options may include drop-in help, moving closer to a family member that can assist when needed or retirement communities that offer fully independent living to supportive assistance as required.

      Community Services

It is also important to research the area community services. You will want to make note of services such as homecare, cleaning services, snow removal, transportation and home repair. Some individuals may want access to volunteer organizations or senior centers where they can be involved in the community.

      Support

As an older adult, moving is an especially difficult transition. Finding the support the senior needs in the new community is imperative. Groups that seniors can connect with will help the transition go smoother. Connect with church groups, home visit solutions or perhaps meetings that would be conducted in a home setting.

Here are some websites that may help you in your transition:

      Romney?s cheap-oil chimera

To the .44-caliber issue of energy, Mitt Romney is bringing a BB gun of a plan and claiming it?s a bazooka.

According to the proposal his campaign released Thursday, Romney?s vision is to achieve "North American energy independence" by 2020 by opening up federal territory for more drilling and by approving projects such as the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada.

The plan?s most obvious problem is that it doesn?t even mention global warming. The other big problem is that promising energy independence is a common political fraud. Among other things, Romney suggests that achieving such independence would "guarantee" "affordable" oil prices and strengthen national security by establishing "freedom from dependence on foreign energy supplies."

But Romney can?t guarantee low energy prices, particularly for oil, and even if he could, it wouldn?t be because North America is "independent" of other regions. The market for crude is global; even if the United States produced all the oil it consumed, riots in Nigeria or pipeline breakdowns in Russia would still affect the price for everyone.

A study cited in Romney?s plan makes this point. Harvard research fellow Leonardo Maugeri writes, "The Western Hemisphere could return to a pre-World War II status of theoretical oil self-sufficiency, and the United States could dramatically reduce its oil import needs." Romney?s white paper quotes that passage but leaves out the next, critical point: "However, quasi oil self-sufficiency will neither insulate the United States from the rest of the global oil market (and world oil prices), nor diminish the critical importance of the Middle East to its foreign policy."

Participating in the global oil market keeps prices down across the board - market forces determine which fields to tap and how to transport which barrels of crude to which refineries and then on to which markets, meeting the requirements of the world?s economies for the least cost. If America weren?t hooked in, our fuel prices would probably jump, since we would be inflexibly dependent on local supplies that are relatively expensive to develop. But U.S. participation in the world market also means we are permanently exposed to its volatility - as long as we demand lots of crude oil.

More U.S. production helps job growth and reduces the trade deficit, and harmonizing energy plans with nearby allies is a good idea. Romney?s, however, is not an energy policy that reflects the big challenges we face. Instead of bragging about how much coal and oil he?s going to pull out of the ground, Romney should be talking about cutting U.S. consumption. But that would require political effort and, probably, higher prices.

iPad mini rumored to be called iPad mini, iPod nano rumored to get Wi-Fi

iPad mini rumored to be called iPad mini, iPod nano rumored to get Wi-Fi

Apple's rumored 7.85-inch iPad is colloquially referred to as the iPad mini could end up being called just that, and the iPod nano could end up getting Wi-Fi so it can access iTunes in the Cloud and the subscription iTunes Match service. This according to Macotakara

According to Asian source, the name of Apple's new product, which are expected to have 7"85' and called as iPad mini, will be named as "iPad mini" officially. This source expects that "iPad" logo will be printed on back of case same as "iPod" is printed on iPod nano and iPod touch, and it means one new product will be added on iPad's product brand genre.

iPad mini does fit with Apple's former iPod mini and current Mac mini brands. However, a lot of people are just calling it iPad mini for lack of an official name, so it's hard to tell if it's just fallen into usage, or actually been decided on. John Gruber of Daring Fireball has mentioned iPad Air, like MacBook Air, and we've gone over some other possibilities as well.

With regards to the iPod nano, it currently looks like iOS, with similar icons and rudimentary touch controls, but it doesn't run iOS. Adding Wi-Fi and hooking it into iCloud might require more than the hybrid OS it's running now. If it's getting a new design, complete with a Hone button, could it be getting an operating system overhaul as well? I have no specific information on this, but it feels like that's what would be required for significant new functionality to be added. And if they're building in a network stack and text entry, what else could it do? Wi-Fi Sync? AirPlay?

Otherwise, why not just stick with Bluetooth and make it a tethered peripheral?

India enjoys a consensus in the United States over good relations

With America?s presidential election looming, perhaps its most striking aspect from an Indian point of view is that no one in New Delhi is unduly concerned about the outcome. There is now a broad consensus in Indian policymaking circles that, whoever wins, India-U.S. relations are more or less on the right track.Democrats and Republicans alike have both been responsible for this development. President Barack Obama?s successful visit to India in 2010, and his historic speech to a joint session of Parliament, capped the most significant recent milestone in bilateral relations. This was one of many encounters that Obama has had with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in various forums since the U.S. president took office, often in multilateral summits like the G-20, and it consolidated the new relationship that has emerged from a decade of dramatic change.

Throughout the Cold War, the world?s oldest democracy and its largest democracy were essentially estranged. America?s initial indifference was best reflected in President Harry Truman?s reaction when Chester Bowles asked to be named ambassador to India: ?I thought India was pretty jammed with poor people and cows round streets, witch doctors, and people sitting on hot coals and bathing in the Ganges ... but I did not realize anybody thought it was important.?

If that was bad, India?s political orientation was even worse. The American preference for developing relationships with anti-communist allies, however unsavory, tied Washington to Pakistan?s increasingly Islamist dictatorship, while India?s non-aligned democracy drifted toward the secular Soviet embrace. The U.S. government regarded non-alignment with distaste. President Dwight D. Eisenhower?s secretary of state, John Foster Dulles, notoriously declared that ?neutrality between good and evil is itself evil.?

In a world divided between two uncompromising superpowers, India?s temporizing seemed like appeasement at best, and aid and comfort for the enemy at worst.

Pakistan, on the other hand, became an essential component in America?s strategy of containment of the Soviet Union and in its later opening to China. From India?s point of view, Washington?s indulgence of Pakistan became overt hostility when the United States sent the 7th Fleet into the Bay of Bengal in support of the Pakistani genocide in Bangladesh in 1971. Tempers cooled soon enough, but India was always regarded as tilting toward the Kremlin, which was hardly a recommendation for warm relations in American eyes.

With the end of the Cold War, and India?s reorientation of its foreign policy, as well as its increasing integration into the global economy, a thaw set in. India?s detonation of a nuclear device in 1998, however, triggered a fresh round of American sanctions against New Delhi.

President Bill Clinton began to turn things around with a hugely successful visit to India in 2000, his last year in office. President George W. Bush?s administration took matters much further, as the two countries signed a defense deal in 2005 and then a landmark accord on civil nuclear cooperation in 2008 (which remains the centerpiece of the transformed relationship).

The nuclear accord simultaneously accomplished two things. It admitted India into the global nuclear club, despite New Delhi?s refusal to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. More important, it acknowledged that U.S. exceptionalism had found a sibling. Thanks to the United States, which strong-armed the 45 countries of the Nuclear Suppliers? Group into swallowing their concerns that special treatment for India could constitute a precedent for rogue nuclear aspirants such as Pakistan, North Korea and Iran, there is now an ?Indian exception.?

Under Obama, nothing quite so dramatic was possible: no spectacular breakthroughs were conceived or executed, nor could many have been imagined. But Obama ? who had displayed a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi in his Senate office, carried a locket of the Hindu god Hanuman, and spoke often of his desire to build a ?close strategic partnership? with India ? struck the right symbolic chords in New Delhi and won over the fractious parliament.

The U.S. is India?s largest trading partner (if both goods and services are included). American exports to India have grown faster in the last five years than those to any other country. The Confederation of Indian Industry estimates that, despite the recent global financial crisis and the U.S. recession that sparked it, bilateral trade in services is likely to grow from $60 billion to more than $150 billion in the next six years.

During the Obama years, there has been progress on other fronts ? the small but significant steps that add up to strengthening the sinews of a relationship. Agreements on seemingly mundane subjects such as agriculture, education, health, and even space exploration and energy security attest to enhanced cooperation. The two governments have also proclaimed initiatives on clean energy and climate change. Significant trade and investment deals, as well as growing linkages between American and Indian universities, have confirmed that each country is developing a more significant stake in the other than ever before.

As a result, Indians will follow the unfolding U.S. elections, like everyone else, with more than passing interest. But, unlike most of the rest of the world, they will feel very little anxiety about the outcome.
