President Obama's Weekly Address: Urging GOP Lawmakers to Help Homeowners

Four years after the economic crisis threatened to destroy the American economy, the president is urging Republican lawmakers to help homeowners who were unfairly disadvantaged by the housing crisis at the heart of the recession.

"We know the biggest cause of that crisis was reckless behavior in the housing market," the president said in his weekly address. "Millions of Americans who did the right and responsible thing - who shopped for a home, secured a mortgage they could afford, and made their payments on time - were badly hurt by the irresponsible actions of others."

As his first term nears a close, the president boasted, "We're moving in the right direction."

"Home sales and construction are up. Prices are beginning to rise. And more than a million families who began this year owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth are now back above water," he said.

In an election-year appeal to middle-class voters, the president touted his administration's efforts to revive the housing industry and help responsible homeowners.

"Now, there are some who think that the only option for homeowners is to just stand by and hope that the market has hit bottom. I don't agree with that," he said in a not-so-subtle jab at GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"But we can do even more if Congress is willing to do their part," Obama said.

He urged lawmakers to act on his plan to help homeowners refinance at lower rates.

"It's a plan that has the support of independent, nonpartisan economists and leaders across the housing industry," Obama said. "But Republicans in Congress worked to keep it from even getting to a vote. And here we are - seven months later - still waiting on Congress to act. ? This makes no sense. Last week, mortgage rates were at historic lows. But instead of helping more and more hardworking families take advantage of those rates, Congress was away on break. Instead of worrying about you, they'd already gone home to worry about their campaigns."

The president admitted "it's going to take a while for our housing market to fully recover," but said it would take longer "if Congress keeps standing in the way."

Open webOS hits version 1.0, gets ported to the Galaxy Nexus

HP?s plan to open source Palm?s webOS is on schedule: yesterday, the company released version 1.0 of Open webOS, which means that developers can now port the software to new devices.

As if on cue, the WebOS Ports team (which isn?t affiliated with HP), announced yesterday that they?ve ported Open webOS 1.0 to the Galaxy Nexus (see video below), the Verge reports. The team has been working on the port for two months, but there?s still plenty of work to be done. They?ve managed to get Open WebOS connected to Wi-Fi, but hardware acceleration and basic phone functions like texting still aren?t working.

HP released its first Open webOS beta to developers last month, and at the time the company boasted that it contained over 450,000 lines of code. Yesterday, HP revealed that it has built more than 75 Open webOS components over the past nine months. The company won?t be bringing the OS to other devices, but it did create a video showing how Open webOS can run on a TouchSmart all-in-one PC.

It?ll be interesting to see just how far developers can take Open webOS. In particular, existing webOS device owners may be interested in the update (HP isn?t officially updating older devices). But I suspect many webOS fans have given up on their Palm mobile dreams long ago.

2013 Ford Explorer a much more refined large SUV

2013 Ford Explorer

It shouldn't take any driver familiar with the history of the Ford Explorer to discern that this sport utility vehicle no longer feels like a truck. The Explorer is still big, features three rows of seating and carries seven passengers.

Yet it's now an SUV with more refinement.

Some major changes arrived in 2011 when Ford succeeded with its full redesign. The company did away with the previous truck-based chassis and its new design resulted in a smoother ride because the Explorer possesses a lighter, car-like quality due to its unibody construction.

  • Performance: 3.5-liter, V6, 290 horsepower
  • Mileage estimate: 16-24 mpg
  • Price: $29,135 to $40,720
  • Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles; drivetrain 5 years/60,000 miles; corrosion 5 years/unlimited; roadside assistance 5 years/60,000

Utilizing the Taurus sedan platform, the Explorer now can hang with some of the large crossover SUV competition like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9 and the Chevrolet Traverse.

Although an Explorer equipped with four-wheel drive can still provide some offroad adventure, it's not a plodder in regular driving situations. Don't worry about the cornering and the rollover possibility because the Explorer will handle those challenging situations just fine with its responsive steering.

It's comforting to know that the Explorer is equipped with Ford's Curve Control, a technology that reduces speed when it senses the vehicle is going too fast around a corner.

The Explorer can still provide power, evidenced by its towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Although no V8 resides in its lineup, the Explorer comes standard with a 3.5-liter, V6 with 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, making it more efficient than previous models. The Explorer is clocked going 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds.

There are other noticeable differences in the Explorer. Gas mileage is one area. Offered in four trims - base, XLT, Limited and Sport - the Explorer ranges from 16-24 mpg, which is typical for this class. The Sport trim model is new for 2013 and features a turbocharged V6 engine and sport-tuned suspension.

This redesign certainly addressed the Explorer's interior issues as well. It's now high quality with some technological features that will please the masses. The dash is made of soft touch material. Cabin room has been added, the seating is comfortable for the first two rows (third row is limiting), cargo space is ample, and there are a number of good storage areas. The optional MyFord Touch has drawn mixed reviews, so be careful making that purchase.

The Explorer is still a rugged looking, rather macho large SUV. But it's the refinements in a number of areas that now have this Ford on more equal footing with its rivals.

Songs in the key of sea

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Soft horns and a tinkling piano form the backbone of "Fifty Degrees North, Four Degrees West," a jazz number with two interesting twists: it has no composer and no actual musicians. Unless you count bacteria and other tiny microbes, that is.

The song is the brainchild of Peter Larsen, a biologist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Larsen, it turns out, has no musical training at all; his interests run less towards the blues and more towards blue-green algae.

When faced with an avalanche of microbial data collected from samples taken from the western English Channel, Larsen recognized he needed a way to make sense of it all. "Thinking of interesting ways to highlight interactions within data is part of my daily job," he said. "I am always trying to find new ways to visualize those relationships in ways so that someone can make relevant biological conclusions."

Listen to examples of microbial bebop: http://www.bio.anl.gov/microbialbebop.htm

In the case of the western English Channel data, however, Larsen decided that a visual representation of the data would not be as effective as one he could hear.

"There are certain parameters like sunlight, temperature or the concentration of phosphorus in the water that give a kind of structure to the data and determine the microbial populations," he said. "This structure provides us with an intuitive way to use music to describe a wide range of natural phenomena."

A colleague of Larsen's suggested that classical music could effectively represent the data, but Larsen wanted any patterns inherent in the information to emerge naturally and not to be imposed from without.

"For something as structured as classical music, there's an insufficient amount of structure that you can infer without having to tweak the result to fit what you perceive it should sound like," Larsen said. "We didn't want to do that."

While this is not the first attempt to "sonify" data, it is one of the more mellifluous examples of the genre. "We were astounded by just how musical it sounded," Larsen said. "A large majority of attempts to converting linear data into sound succeed, but they really don't obey the dictates of music -- meter, tempo, harmony. To see these things in natural phenomena and to describe them was a wonderful surprise."

According to Larsen, the musicality of the data is not limited to the organisms in the English Channel. In another set of analysis, he and his colleagues used a similar methodology to look at the relationship between a plant and a fungus.

"We expect to see the same intuitive patterns recurring in different environments," he said. "Sometimes, it can sound a little avant-garde, but it's not random because it reflects very real phenomena."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Get in line, Medicare and Social Security. Seniors, like just about everyone else, have money on their minds.

Who wins the trust of seniors, a group that votes at a higher rate than any other, will be a deciding factor in the presidential election. That should be good news for Mitt Romney, because those 65 and older have backed the Republican candidate in both of the last two presidential elections.

But President Barack Obama has been pounding Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, on their plan for Medicare. Those attacks are starting to bear fruit for Obama, who is gaining ground among seniors in two key battlegrounds: Florida and Ohio.

Still, Romney has the edge nationally among seniors ? in no small part thanks to seniors' concerns about Obama's handling of the economy.

Nowhere will the senior vote be as powerful or as prominent as in Florida, where Romney and Obama are competing fiercely.

"It's not just the cookie cutter that every senior here is totally dependent on Social Security and Medicare," said Susan MacManus, a political scientist at the University of South Florida. "As the FDR generation has passed and generational replacement has occurred, you get a more divided senior electorate."

More seniors say the economy is extremely important to their vote than Medicare, says a poll released Thursday by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. A recent Associated Press-GfK poll shows 7 in 10 seniors say taxes and the federal deficit are important to them.

Even for those well into retirement, a feeble economy affects older Americans in ways you might not realize. Many have had to bail out adult children who have lost their jobs and turned to their aging parents for help. And those who lived through the Great Depression as children relate intimately to the perils of an over-indebted nation.

Just ask Dominic Santoro, an 81-year-old retiree from Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., who said it's different for seniors than it is for younger Americans, who have years to make up what was lost during the recession.

"That's very nice, but what about the poor senior citizen that's no longer working and can't replace that money?" said Santoro, who plans to vote for Romney.

But if seniors' concerns extend beyond entitlements, those seeking the White House don't seem to have caught on.

Obama and Ryan both hewed closely to themes of Medicare and Social Security in their speeches last week to an AARP summit in New Orleans. Ryan, who was loudly booed for vowing to repeal "Obamacare," offered assurances that he and Romney wouldn't alter Medicare for those in or near retirement.

"Medicare is a promise, and we will honor it," Ryan said. "A Romney-Ryan administration will protect and strengthen Medicare ? for my mom's generation and for my kids and yours."

Not so, said Obama, warning seniors that Ryan and Romney want to replace Medicare with vouchers that wouldn't keep up with health care costs. It's an admonition echoed in a television ad Obama's campaign started airing Friday in Florida, Colorado and Iowa.

Both Ryan and Romney invoked their late grandmothers in working to convince AARP members that they understand what seniors go through.

"She was a great citizen who lived up to her responsibilities," Obama said. "And after a lifetime of hard work, what she hoped for in return was to be able to live out her golden years with dignity and security, and to see her grandchildren and her great grandchildren have a better life."

Although far from a monolithic bloc, seniors by and large have sided with Romney throughout this year's election and favored the former Massachusetts governor 52-41 in a national AP-GfK poll in September. While Romney has lost his edge among overall voters on handling of the economy, seniors are the holdout, preferring Romney by 10 points over Obama on that issue.

But in competitive states that could determine the election's outcome, seniors' attitudes are on the move. Over the past month, Obama has climbed 9 points in Florida and 4 points in Ohio, giving him an edge over Romney in both states, according to a new Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times poll. It's the opposite in Pennsylvania, where Obama has lost his edge among seniors and now trails Romney 45-50.

Older voters will make up a dramatically larger part of the population in the coming decades, according to a report released Tuesday by the National Academy of Sciences. Americans are living longer, working longer and waiting until later in life to have children.

In the near term, that shift may work in Republicans' favor, offsetting some of the boost that Democrats are expected to enjoy from the growing minority population.

Those who witnessed a post-Depression resurgence tend to fondly recall FDR's New Deal and may be more likely to vote Democratic, said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. But as time marches on, they'll be replaced by their younger counterparts.

"The ones who came up since then, the so-called 'Silent Generation, has moved more conservative on fiscal issues," said Frey. They came into their own in the 1950s and 1960s, saved their money and want to know those savings will still be there when it's time to draw them out.

Their children, the baby boomers, are more fragmented when it comes to their financial situations and living arrangements. Many had fewer children than their parents' generation and now, facing retirement, have less support from their sons and daughters. Some have solid pensions and are in good shape. Still others are female heads of household with little savings.

And for many of those who grew up in an America marked by the turbulence of World War II, global unrest and anti-American rage may be all the more disconcerting.

"I used to be proud to be an American," said Diane Fritz, a 69-year-old Romney supporter from Port Charlotte, Fla. "We don't even look like we're a strong country anymore."

Barbara Kelleher, 66, an Obama supporter, put it another way:

"Suddenly you think, 'What's going to happen and how is this going to affect my grandchildren's future?'" said Kelleher, of Loveland, Colo. "You want the world to be a safe place."

'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Kurt Sutter ?Not Shocked? By Johnny ...

Sons of Anarchy Johnny Lewis Dead Kurt Sutter

Frederick M. Brown, Getty Images / FX

Earlier this morning, tragic and surprising news broke that one-time ?Sons of Anarchy? star Johnny Lewis had died in a bizarre incident where the actor beat his 81-year-old landlady to death, got in an altercation with several men and died in a fall from the home in which he?d rented a room. Though the investigation is still on-going, ?Sons of Ancarhy? creator Kurt Sutter has issued his own response to the news, for which he grieves, but claims not to be surprised by.

While the ?Sons of Anarchy? cast and crew, as well as the family, friends and fans of actor Johnny Lewis continue to grieve for his death, series creator and Lewis? one-time boss Kurt Sutter had some unique words regarding the man?s passing. Taking to his Twitter account, Sutter explained that while Lewis? loss was tragic, it was not unforeseen.

not sure if folks know this yet, but johnny lewis (halfsack) died last night.? the sad irony of it happening two days after Opie?s death is not lost on me. it was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way. i wish i could say that i was shocked by the events last night, but i was not.

i am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path. yes, it?s [a] day [of] mourning, but it?s also a day of awareness and gratitude. sadly, some of us carry the message by dying.

Sutter refers to the ?irony? of recent headlines surrounding ?Sons of Anarchy,? in which a beloved on-screen character and member of the SAMCRO organization was shockingly killed off. In real life, Lewis himself portrayed Kip ?Half-Sack? Epps on the series for the first two seasons, before the character was killed off at Lewis? request. Reportedly, Lewis had ?creative differences? with Sutter, and wished to be let go from his contract.

Sutter likely has a great deal of insight into the actor?s demise, in which police are investigating claims that the actor was on drugs at the time of his death, and facing a number of recent criminal charges.

Elsewhere, the investigation continues into the tragic loss.

Soil heat shield concept passes arc jet testing

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Arc jet testing under intense temperatures and pressures showed that heat shields made from the soil of other worlds will stand up to the conditions they would encounter plunging through Earth's atmosphere, researchers said this week.

Michael Hogue, a researcher at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, led a team of engineers as they exposed samples of heat shield materials to an intense plasma wind known as an arc jet at Ames research Center earlier this week. The 2-inch by 4-inch shaped blocks were made from different mixtures of soil simulating lunar and Martian regolith.

The scientists recorded no burn-through or uneven erosion of the surface on any of the samples through a series of progressively higher energy levels, Hogue said.

The test results mean the idea of making heat shields out of the soils, or regolith, of other planets and moons remains feasible, Hogue said.

For mission planners in the future, the concept could produce a windfall of weight savings because spacecraft could make their own shielding on planets and moons where gravity is so low that it would take little energy to lift even a massive heat shield from the surface into orbit. Lifting material from Earth's surface and gravity well requires a great deal of thrust and cost, by contrast.

Applications could include an uncrewed spacecraft molding a heat shield on a Martian moon and then riding it through the Martian atmosphere to make a landing. The same principle could be applied to a large habitation module for astronauts or any number of similar missions.

The technology remains in its infancy, but with strong test results, Hogue and his team will be able to complete a report by the end of November and apply for continued funding to develop the innovation further.

Why Building An Email List Should Be Your Number One Priority

Let?s talk about me for a moment (my favorite topic!).?I?ve been doing interviews with successful web designers and developers who run successful online businesses for the last couple of months.?I haven?t done too many interviews like that yet, but one thing caught my attention early on, and it seems that the more I analyze the web design/web development scene in blogosphere, the more my assumptions seem to be right.

Web designers and developers tend to leave a lot of money on the table simply because they don?t employ one of the most effective online marketing strategies out there: e-mail marketing.

Let?s take a closer look to this situation, shall we?

Two biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to e-mail marketing

In my humble opinion, it doesn?t matter which niche you are in (yup, even in online marketing), most people who run (or try to run) an online business make these two mistakes when it comes to e-mail marketing:

  • They don?t build an e-mail list at all.
  • They don?t make building an e-mail list their first priority.

Now, this is especially clear in niches where majority of people don?t know much about online marketing in general, such as, you have guessed it, web design and web development.?You can go through different websites of designers and developers, both personal and multi-author ones, to see that for yourself.

A lot of people aren?t building e-mail lists at all, and those who are, do it by putting up a barely visible opt-in form, and then use their e-mail list to simply send out updates to their subscribers.

Again, really, that?s A LOT of money being left on the table.

No. 1 regret that people who run successful online businesses have

You know, when I want to achieve something, I?m always curious to hear what people who have already achieved that same goal have to say about it, and especially about what they would do differently and what their biggest regrets are.

Now, since I want to build a successful online business, and I assume you want to do the same, I decided to share some interesting quote from a guy who actually runs a very successful six-figure online business:

Pat Flynn from?Smart Passive Income

When I started this blog back in October of 2008, I had made the newbie mistake of not including a way to accumulate email addresses. No newsletter, no opt-in form ? nothing. Over a year later, I finally got my head on straight?

Pat is not the only one though.

A lot of online entrepreneurs wish that they would have started building an e-mail list much earlier.

Here?s an another example:

Yaro Starak from Entrepreneurs Journey

The biggest mistake I made when building my blog was waiting so long to start building an email list.

This is a recurring theme in a lot of interviews and conversations with people who are very successful online.

The question is, why the obsession with e-mail marketing?

The reason behind e-mail marketing craze: it?s pretty damn effective!

Hard data clearly shows that e-mail marketing works.

Here are some statistics:

  • The DMA puts email marketing?s ROI for 2011 at $40.56 for every $1 invested. The figure for 2012 is predicted to ?fall? to $39.40, when email will account for $67.8 billion in sales (reference).
  • 72% of respondents to an Econsultancy survey in early 2011 described email?s ROI as excellent or good. Only organic SEO scored better (reference).
  • A 2011 MerchantCircle survey of over 8,000 local business owners in the US found email marketing cited by 35.8% as a Top 3 most effective marketing or advertising method. Only social network profiles and search engine marketing scored higher (reference).
  • A 2011 business survey by Ireland?s Marketing Institute saw 84% claiming email marketing was important or very important to their marketing strategy (reference).
  • In a 2011 Focus survey of marketers, the channel cited most often as the best performer over the previous 12 months was email (reference).
  • The ForeSee Results 2010 report on the effectiveness of social media found that promotional emails were the second biggest influence on retail website visits. The biggest influence was familiarity with the brand (reference).
  • In Datran Media?s 2010 Annual Marketing & Media Survey, 39.4% of industry executives said the advertising channel that performed strongest for them was email. This was the top result (reference).

Well, when you see the data, you might wonder why doest this particular online marketing method works so well?

The magic ingredient: trust

My guess is that the reason behind the effectiveness of online marketing is that it is an excellent way to build trust with your readers, which means that if you do it right, they are sold on something long before you make the offer.

Reading blog, subscribing to an RSS feeds, or following someone on Twitter on Facebook is far, far less personal than giving someone your e-mail address and getting their e-mails straight to the inbox, with an option of further e-mail communication.

All of that allows you to build relationships with your subscribers, which later turn into sales when you present them your offer.

You might wonder what trust has to do with making money online?

Most people don?t buy something online the first time they see it. It?s much more likely that they read some content first, maybe leave a comment, follow that person or company on social media, subscriber to their e-mail list, maybe even exchange e-mails with the person/people behind the website, and only after that they make a decision to buy something. This is a long sequence of actions which express an increasing level of trust and eventually lead to sale. Honestly, it?s very hard to sell something to someone who didn?t go through at least some of the steps in this sequence.

The level of trust your audience has in you is one of the most important factors that will determine whether your business will thrive or go bankrupt.

Too bad so many people scammers don?t see it that way, but oh, well, what can you do..

Anyway, back to e-mail marketing..

Make building an email list your first priority!

I didn?t realize the importance of building an e-mail list for years, up until I watched this video with Derek Halpern.

Yes, I?m going to through another quote at you, this time a really long one.

What are some thing that haven?t caught on right now? The one thing that actually much to my dismay is the importance of building an e-mail list. I got a lot of people to start building e-mail lists, but they?re not focusing on that as their main goal. They?re really doing themselves a disservice.

They?re promoting their social media profiles, they?re talking about things like Pinterest, they?re talking about things like Twitter..And yeah, these things are great, they send traffic, but you don?t need to build your following on these particular outposts (I think that?s how Chris Brogan calls them) to get traffic from them: if your audience is on that particular network, they?ll share it for you. Yes, having a network on your own helps, but if you got an e-mail list, you can build a?Facebook?page over nigh.I got like 2700 likes on my Facebook page, there?s not one link on my blog anywhere. The reason I got 2700 likes is I focused on building an e-mail list and then said ?Hey, guys, by the way, I have a Facebook page? and I got a 1000 likes in 5 minutes. Focus on the e-mail list.

Now, why don?t people focus on building that e-mail list? Well, this comes down to psychology. When people start a blog and you start writing posts, it?s very disheartening in the beginning. You?re not getting very much traffic, you?re not getting any blog comments, you?re not getting much of anything and it feels horrible. It makes it feel like no one?s reading your hard work. You?re not getting any positive reinforcement for all of your hard work.

People promote social media on the other hand because they do get that reinforcement. They?ll send out a tweet, they?ll get one reply. They?ll see someone else?s tweet, they?ll reply. That conversation feels great, it lets people know, let?s the person who?s running their social media account know, that they actually exist in the universe.

Now, I do a lot of research, a lot of people e-mail me with what they?re struggling with, that?s another thing I focus on. A lot of people actually said this exact word, I?m running a blog, and I feel like I?m invisible. So, no one wants to feel like they?re invisible. They want to have recognition, they want people to acknowledge the fact that they?re putting hard work into their blogs. So I believe people aren?t building e-mail lists because they?re getting that positive reinforcement of conversation on social media and they?re not ready to focus on e-mail list because e-mail list is more of a long term play, it?s kind of why do people eat sweets today, but want to lose weight in three months. People can?t look at the long term. That?s why I believe e-mail list building hasn?t taken off as a main focus.

..And it also helps that there are many people who say ?Build social media followings!? and these people have never built social media following. So, that?s another issue.

The way Derek explained this made a light bulb appear above my head.

My conclusion was..

E-mail list first. Everything else second.

You might get very confused when experts tell you that so many things are ?very important?: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Plus,?YouTube, etc.

The problem is that most of these people don?t have a clue what they are talking about.

I suggest you to get that nonsense out of your head as soon as possible in order to prevent depression and suicidal thoughts that might come as a result of so many voices in your head.

Don?t over-complicate it:

  • Focus on building an e-mail list.
  • It?s really that simple.

What is the next step?

I hope I was successful in my attempts to convert you into the e-mail marketing religion.

Now, you know how there?s this popular saying in online marketing circles, ?Money is in the list!?, right?

Well, that saying is actually a very misleading one.

Here?s a more accurate description of the situation:??Money is in the list, unless your list doesn?t give a shit!?

You won?t be rolling in the dough if your list doesn?t give a damn about you or your offers.

You have to build a list and maintain it in the right way if you want to go and lay in the beach in Thailand sipping cocktails while the money is rolling in.

Now, don?t you worry, being the kind and generous person that I am, I will explain how to do exactly that in the coming few articles!

See you there! :D

Curiosity Rover Touches 1st Martian Rock, Makes Longest Drive Yet

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity reached out and touched a Martian rock with its huge robotic arm for the first time, then took off on its longest Red Planet drive to date.

Curiosity spent the past several days investigating a strange pyramid-shaped stone named "Jake Matijevic," testing out some of the gear at the end of its 7-foot-long (2.1 meters) arm. These tools include the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), which measures elemental composition, and the Mars Hand Lens Imager close-up camera, or MAHLI.

The rover performed these initial "contact science" operations on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 22 and 23), researchers said. Photos snapped on those days show Curiosity's arm sidled up against "Jake Matijevic," with the arm's turret obscuring most of the 16-inch-tall (25 centimeters) rock.

"I did a science! 1st contact science on rock target Jake," the Curiosity team announced Saturday (Sept. 22) via the rover's Twitter feed @MarsCuriosity, which has more than 1.1 million followers. "Here's an action shot." [Curiosity Mars Rover: 11 Amazing Facts]

Curiosity also zapped "Jake Matijevic" with the laser on its ChemCam instrument, which reads rock composition from the vaporized bits. Comparing the results should help cross-calibrate the two instruments, researchers said.

The ChemCam work wrapped up Monday (Sept. 24), at which point Curiosity embarked on a 138-foot (42 m) drive ? the longest one-day jaunt for the rover since it landed inside Mars' Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5.

Curiosity is making its way toward a site called Glenelg, which lies 1,300 feet (400 m) from the rover's touchdown site. Before Monday's drive, the mission team had said Curiosity was about halfway to Glenelg.

Scientists will likely soon begin looking for sandy areas to try out Curiosity's scooping system for the first time. The arm will deposit bits of Martian soil into the analytical instruments on the rover's body, which are known as SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) and CheMin (short for Chemistry & Mineralogy).? ?

The first use of Curiosity's rock-boring drill, which also sits at the end of the rover's arm, will come sometime after that, researchers have said.

While team members are keen to see what Curiosity discovers at Glenelg, the $2.5 billion rover's main destination is the base of Mount Sharp. This odd mountain rises 3.4 miles (5.5 km) into the Red Planet sky from Gale Crater's center, and its foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

Those foothills lie about 6 miles (10 km) away from Curiosity's landing site. The rover ? whose main task is to determine if the Gale area could ever have supported microbial life ? may be ready to turn its wheels toward the interesting deposits near the end of the year, scientists have said.

The rock "Jake Matijevic" takes its name from Curiosity's surface operations systems chief engineer, who died Aug. 20 at the age of 64. Matijevic, who was based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., also worked on all three previous Mars rovers ? Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity ? NASA officials said.

ASTA Reports Agencies Optimistic for Stronger Profits | Travel Agent ...

September 24, 2012 By: News Wire Travel Agent

?

graphASTA reports that a recent survey found that that most agencies saw stronger revenue and transaction volume in the first half of 2012 as compared to 2011. Further, the survey found agencies expect to see a stronger profit in 2012 and 2013, returning to pre-2009 profit levels, ASTA said.

?The results of this survey, conducted earlier this summer, indicate that despite a slower than hoped for pace, the travel agency industry is rebounding well and set to recover fully,? said ASTA President and Chair Nina Meyer.

?Certainly some of this improved economic forecast can be attributed to the fact that consumers, realizing the value that comes in working with a travel agent, are again planning their next trip with the help of a travel professional," Meyer said.

When asked to compare performance for the first half of 2012 to the same time period in 2011, the majority of ASTA members said their performance for revenue (73%), transactions (72%) and client list (75%) was the same or better in 2012 than the first half of 2011.?

Only about a quarter saw a decrease in revenue, transactions and/or clients. While on par with results from a similar study done in 2011, this year?s results are vastly better than those from 2010 when a third of agencies saw a decrease in performance and from 2009 when four-fifths saw a decrease, ASTA reports.

For the first time in several years, the percentage of corporate agencies seeing a decrease in performance was less than leisure agencies. Whereas many corporate agencies reported increased performance for revenue and transactions, most failed to see an increase in their client list, suggesting that the revenue increase is not related to an increased clientele. Instead, their clients increased business travel in the first half of 2012, ASTA said in its analysis.

When looking at sales by segment, cruise, tour/group, insurance and FIT were the strongest performing segments based on the percentage of agencies reporting increased sales in the first half of 2012, ASTA said. Corporate agencies saw an increase in air sales in the first half of 2012 compared to 2011 and had a significant increase in insurance sales as well during the same period.

Agencies are optimistic regarding future profits: the average profit predicted for 2012 is nine percent while 2013 brings an even stronger year with average profits of 10 percent predicted. Corporate agencies are just as optimistic for 2012 and 2013, predicting nine percent profits and 10 percent profits respectively, ASTA reports.

Survey data was collected through the 2012 ASTA Research Family. The ASTA Research Family is a panel comprised of a representative sample of ASTA member travel agency owners and managers and reflects ASTA members in key agency demographics including sales volume, leisure/business mix, number of part-time and full-time employees and geographic location.?

The survey data was collected online via www.surveygizmo.com in June/July 2012. The reply level indicates a minimum of 95-percent confidence with an error rate +/- five percent.

WHY IT MATTERS: Debt

The issue:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects in taxes and fees? is on track to top $1 trillion for the fourth straight year. When there's not enough to pay current bills, the government borrows, mostly by selling interest-bearing Treasury bonds, bills and notes to investors and governments worldwide. It now borrows about 40 cents for every dollar it spends.

The national debt refers to the total amount the federal government owes; the deficit is just a one-year slice.

The U.S. has been borrowing since the 1700s, when it needed money to finance the American Revolution. The outstanding debt has since risen to a shade over $16 trillion. While there's plenty of finger-pointing by politicians over who's to blame, deficits historically surge during wars and deep recessions, and the U.S. has had both over the past decade.

___

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. To help, he would raise taxes on households earning over $250,000 annually and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making over $1 million.

He acknowledges his spending on recession-fighting stimulus, tax relief and bailout programs ? much of it started under former President George W. Bush ? has contributed to the deficit. But so have bipartisan agreements to extend Bush-era tax cuts, and paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also raising deficits: a falloff in tax revenues as more people found themselves out of work and personal and corporate incomes sagged in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts, including some of the reductions proposed by his conservative running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee. But many of the cuts they're pushing would be partially negated by their proposals to lower top tax rates on both corporations and individuals.

___

Why it matters:

Deficits and debt are important because it's never good to spend more than you make for too long. The party out of power always makes deficits a big issue against the one holding the White House ? as Democrats did in 2008 and Republicans are doing now.

Leaders of both parties agree the burden will become unsustainable if borrowing is not reined in while interest obligations keep rising. But huge policy differences exist over how to balance the budget or at least trim deficits to manageable levels ? whether through spending cuts, tax increases or a mix.

Obama and Democrats tend to favor a combination, while Republicans mostly want just spending cuts, although Romney and Ryan say they'd also end some tax deductions and close loopholes ? without specifying which ones.

Congress sets a ceiling on how much the government can borrow. If this debt limit is breached, the government will default on its obligations. This has never happened, but it almost did last summer in a Capitol Hill standoff. As a consequence, the nation's credit rating was downgraded for the first time ever.

The current $16.4 trillion debt limit will be reached late this year or early next. A slew of tax breaks will expire at the same time.

No matter who wins, he'll immediately have his hands full.

Bill Clinton has "no earthly idea" whether Hillary will run

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If Secretary of State Hillary Clinton harbors ambitions to run for president, she is keeping them under tight wraps.

"I have no earthly idea what she'll decide to do," her husband, former President Bill Clinton, said on CBS television's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

Although Hillary Clinton went down to defeat to President Barack Obama in a close primary contest in 2008, she has stayed in the public eye as the president's top diplomat. In that role, Clinton, who had been a U.S. Senator from New York, has built a reputation as a capable stateswoman and a loyal lieutenant to the president. She is frequently rated as the most popular member of Obama's cabinet.

Clinton has said she will step down from her current job whether the president wins re-election to another four-year term on November 6 or not.

"She wants to take some time off, kind of regroup. Write a book," her husband said.

However, she is likely to remain an influential voice and questions about her political future will persist. Clinton's support among Democrats is firm, and some had hoped Obama would boost his re-election chances by replacing the gaffe-prone Vice President Joseph Biden with her as his No. 2.

While she has remained generally outside the political fray during this election season, her husband has seized a prominent role in campaigning for the president's re-election. Even so, Hillary Clinton, who was first lady when her husband was president from 1993-2001, is herself known as one of the Democratic Party's most influential and best-networked insiders.

The former president said that no matter what, there would be a strong crop of Democrats interested in running for the Oval Office in 2016, including governors and members of Congress.

"We've got a lot of able people in our party who want to be president," he said.

However, he said that with his wife's experience in the White House, where she led an unsuccessful effort to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system, on Capitol Hill, and in the administration, there would be no one more qualified than her to run.

"She's the ablest, I know I'm biased, but I think she demonstrated as senator and as secretary of state that she has extraordinary ability," Clinton said.

From Nigeria to Athens, Muslim protests rumble on

DUBAI (Reuters) - Muslims protested in Nigeria, Iran, Greece and Turkey on Sunday to show anti-Western anger against a film and cartoons insulting Islam had not dissipated.

As delegates from around the world gathered in New York for a U.N. General Assembly where the clash between free speech and blasphemy is bound to be raised, U.S. flags were once again burning in parts of the Muslim world.

Iranian students chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" outside the French embassy in Tehran in protest at the decision by satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to publish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, days after widespread protests - some deadly - against a film made in the United States.

Shi'ite Muslims in the Nigerian town of Katsina burned U.S., French and Israeli flags and a religious leader called for protests to continue until the makers of the film and cartoons are punished.

In Pakistan, where fifteen people were killed in protests on Friday, a government minister has offered $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of the short, amateurish video "The Innocence of Muslims". Calls have increased for a U.N. measure outlawing insults to Islam and blasphemy in general.

In Athens, some protesters hurled bottles of water, stones and shoes at police who responded with teargas. Calm returned when demonstrators interrupted the protest to pray.

ON ALERT

Protests around the world were relatively small and calm, but Western embassies remained on alert after the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in one of the first protests, on September 11.

The upsurge of Muslim anger - just weeks before U.S. elections - have confronted President Barack Obama with a setback yet in his efforts to keep the "Arab Spring" revolutions from fuelling a new wave of anti-Americanism.

In U.S. ally Turkey, a secular Muslim state often seen as a bridge between the Islamic world and the West, protesters set fire to U.S. and Israeli flags on Sunday.

"May the hands that touch Mohammad break," chanted some 200 protesters before peacefully dispersing.

"We will certainly not allow uncontrolled protests, but we will not just grin and bear it when Islam's prophet is insulted," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told party members at the weekend.

"The protests in the Muslim world must be measured, and the West should show a determined stance against Islamophobia."
