And that's news how? Talk about your pointless threats. Almost nothing that the Senate has passed in the past two years has made it to the House floor anyway. That wasn't going to change after this election.

But it is pretty inappropriate interference. Maybe Harry Reid should do something like call for Senate hearings on the House committee chair selection process.

Endangered primates caught in Congolese conflict

As the United Nations warns of a growing humanitarian crisis in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the advance of the M23 rebel militia might also affect the gorillas and chimps in the region.

Last week the M23 rebels took the city of Goma and vowed to march south to Bukavu. Yesterday they said that they will also withdraw from Goma but their intentions are far from clear. If they do move on to Bukavu, in their path is the Primate Rehabilitation Centre of Lwiro, which holds more than 50 chimps and 70 monkeys, and the GRACE gorilla sanctuary in Kasugho, which cares for gorillas wounded by poachers or armed conflict.

"In addition to the captive apes, we are concerned about wild ape populations ? chimpanzees, lowland gorillas, and the critically endangered mountain gorillas," says Anna Behm Masozera of the International Gorilla Conservation Programme in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Lwiro sanctuary put its contingency plan into action last week: they have stockpiled enough food, water, fuel, medications and cleaning supplies necessary to run the sanctuary for 15 days, says its director, Carmen Vidal, should the need arise.

Shots and riots

If the rebels continue their advance towards Lwiro, the plan is for some workers to seek safety at a nearby UN camp, and for some of the expatriate workers to return to their countries, says Vidal. The staff that choose to remain would continue to care for the animal residents. "Although the majority of Lwiro's animals are semi-free-ranging, they need to be fed three times a day as the forest doesn't have sufficient food for all of them."

"There have been shots and rioting near us in the past week as tensions rise among the various militia factions and within local communities," says Vidal. As a result, Lwiro's animals have "become nervous, display stereotypical stress behaviours and some have even stopped eating".

Luitzen Santman, the director of GRACE, says that his sanctuary has also stockpiled extra food and supplies and that the United Nations peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, is on standby to provide extra protection if needed. "We are experienced with insecurity in the region" he says. Fortunately, GRACE is located "at a very remote field site that has no political or military relevance. Field conservation sites like GRACE that stay politically neutral seem not to attract attention of rebel groups."

Santman says that primates are unlikely to be directly targeted by the rebel groups to make a political point, but says there might be an increase in them being killed for bushmeat as fighters move through their habitat.

Gorillas missing

Since the M23 reached the Virunga National Park near Goma in July, they have more or less cooperated with the park authorities, allowing staff to search for missing gorilla families but this became impossible recently when fighting in the region intensified. Two mountain gorilla families are currently unaccounted for.

"There are many concerns in this time of uncertainty but the biggest is that for three months we have been unable to redeploy our rangers into the gorilla sector of the park," says chief warden Emmanuel de Merode.

This problem is exacerbated by the unavailability of the light aircraft normally used by the Virunga workers for surveillance and monitoring of the 7800-square-kilometre park. The park's staff moved it to Goma airport earlier this month to stop it falling into rebel hands, but they were unable to risk moving it again when it became clear that the city was a target. The UN is currently in control of the airport but they are surrounded by the M23. Without the aircraft at their disposal, the park workers are unable to keep track of their animals.

It is not only the M23 group that Virunga workers have to contend with. Some sections of the park are controlled by militia groups of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), who along with the Mai Mai Pareco group have used the M23's battle with Congolese troops to step up their illegal poaching activities.

In the past two weeks an elephant and a buffalo have been killed in the park's central sector. Destruction of primates' habitat is also an increasing problem. Groups such as the FDLR Mandevu, who operate out of the park just north of Goma, finance themselves through the sale of illegal charcoal, produced by burning timber from the park's forests.

New York nanny pleads not guilty in deaths of two kids

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York nanny accused of the stabbing deaths of two young children last month pleaded not guilty to murder charges Wednesday in a rare judicial proceeding conducted inside a hospital where the 50-year-old woman is recovering from self-inflicted wounds.

Yoselyn Ortega was indicted two weeks ago on two counts each of first- and second-degree murder in the killings of Lucia Krim, 6, and her brother, Leo, who was days shy of his second birthday, in their parents' luxury apartment.

Ortega entered the not-guilty plea from her hospital room at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, according to a pool report of the proceeding. She has been in the hospital since October 25 recovering from what police have described as stab wounds she inflicted on herself at the scene of the murders.

The children's mother, Marina Krim, discovered their bodies in the bathtub when she returned to their Upper West Side home from a swimming lesson with a third child, police have said. Ortega then began to stab herself in front of Krim.

Ortega was formally arrested earlier this month after police interviewed her for the first time in her hospital room.

Ortega had been employed by the Krim family for two years, police said. She lived with her son and sister near the Krims' apartment off Central Park and has been a naturalized U.S. citizen for a decade.

Marina Krim had expected to meet Ortega and the two children at a local dance studio on the day of the killings. Upon finding the lights out in the apartment, Marina Krim asked the doorman if Ortega had taken the kids out, police said.

Krim then re-entered the home and found the children in the bathroom before encountering Ortega.

Kevin Krim, the children's father and a CNBC executive, had been heading home from a business trip at the time of the killings, police said.

Studies examine whether therapies for heart failure are associated with improved survival

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? An analysis of two heart failure therapies finds differing outcomes regarding improvement in survival, according to two studies appearing in the November 28 issue of JAMA.

In one study, Adrian F. Hernandez, M.D., M.H.S., of the Duke Clinical Research Institute, Durham, N.C., and colleagues examined the clinical effectiveness of aldosterone antagonist therapy and associations with long-term outcomes of older patients discharged from a hospitalization for heart failure.

"Aldosterone antagonist therapy [a diuretic drug] for heart failure and reduced ejection fraction [a measure of how well the left ventricle of the heart pumps with each contraction] has been highly efficacious in randomized trials. However, questions remain regarding the effectiveness and safety of the therapy in clinical practice," according to background information in the article.

The researchers examined outcomes of eligible patients hospitalized with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction using clinical registry data linked to Medicare claims from 2005 through 2010. The primary outcomes measured for the study were all-cause mortality, cardiovascular readmission, and heart failure readmission at 3 years, and readmission associated with hyperkalemia (higher than normal levels of potassium in the circulating blood) at 30 days and 1 year.

Of the 5,887 patients (average age, 78 years) who met the inclusion criteria from 246 hospitals, 1,070 (18.2 percent) received a prescription for an aldosterone antagonist at hospital discharge. The researchers found that rates of all-cause mortality (49.9 percent vs. 51.2 percent) and cardiovascular readmission (63.8 percent vs. 63.9 percent) were similar between the treatment groups at 3 years. The cumulative incidence rates of arrhythmia (5.4 percent vs. 3.9 percent) and elective readmission for an arrhythmia control device (6.5 percent vs. 4.2 percent) were higher for the treated group. Analysis of the data indicated that there were no significant differences in mortality and cardiovascular readmission.

The authors also found that the cumulative incidence of the first heart failure readmission was significantly lower in the treated group (38.7 percent vs. 44.9 percent). The hyperkalemia readmission rates at 30 days (2.9 percent vs. 1.2 percent) and 1 year (8.9 percent vs. 6.3 percent) were higher in the treated group; however, hyperkalemia was seldom the primary diagnosis for these readmissions, and the absolute increase in hyperkalemia as a primary diagnosis was small.

The authors add that a potential explanation for their findings is that aldosterone antagonists have limited effectiveness regarding mortality in real-world settings among older patients. "One potential reason for limited effectiveness may be a lack of adherence to or persistence with therapy. ? Our findings highlight the importance of conducting clinical trials that can be easily generalized to real-world practice and in which the most vulnerable patient groups are well represented."

Use of ACE Inhibitors, ARB's, Associated With Improved Survival Among Certain Patients With Heart Failure

In another study, Lars H. Lund, M.D., Ph.D., of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues conducted a study to examine whether renin-angiotensin system (RAS) antagonists (i.e., angiotensin-converting enzyme [ACE] inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers [ARBs] are associated with reduced mortality in heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction.

"Up to half of patients with heart failure have normal or near-normal ejection fraction, termed heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF) or diastolic heart failure. The mortality in HFPEF may be as high as in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFREF) or systolic heart failure, but there is no proven therapy," according to background information in the article.

The study included 41,791 patients in the Swedish Heart Failure Registry, from 64 hospitals and 84 outpatient clinics between 2000 and 2011. Of these, 16,216 patients with HFPEF (ejection fraction of 40 percent or greater; average age, 75 years; 46 percent women) were either treated (n = 12,543) or not treated (n = 3,673) with RAS antagonists. Analyses was conducted of the data to determine the association between use of RAS antagonists and all-cause mortality, with use of a matched cohort. The researchers included 20,111 patients with ejection fraction of less than 40 percent for the HFREF consistency analysis.

In the overall HFPEF group, crude 1-year survival was 86 percent for patients receiving RAS antagonists vs. 69 percent for patients not receiving RAS antagonists; and 5-year survival was 55 percent vs. 32 percent, respectively. In the matched HFPEF cohort, 1-year survival was 77 percent for treated patients vs. 72 percent for untreated patients. Five-year survival was 36 percent vs. 34 percent, respectively.

"There is currently no consensus on the use of RAS antagonists in patients with HFPEF. In our study, use of RAS antagonists was associated with reduced all-cause mortality in a broad unselected population of patients with HFPEF. Our results together with the signal toward benefit in randomized controlled trials suggest that RAS antagonists may be beneficial in patients with HFPEF, but this should be confirmed in an appropriately powered randomized trial," the authors conclude.

Editorial: Heart Failure Therapy -- What Should Clinicians Believe?

In an accompanying editorial, James C. Fang, M.D., of University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, examines the question of what physicians should conclude from these 2 observational studies that would appear to contradict the clinical trial evidence.

"If all of the evidence is carefully considered in its totality, it would be sound to conclude that (1) renin-angiotensin system antagonists are reasonable agents to control hypertension in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and (2) aldosterone antagonists are effective drugs in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction but should be used carefully and selectively. Although clinical trials should remain the gold standard for testing hypotheses, observational studies bridge the gap from the scientific rigor of clinical trials to real-world experience. Clinical trials are a reminder of the rigor of medicine as a science; observational studies are a reminder that medicine is still an art."

University of Glasgow and Clyde Space set to put brakes on space junk problem

Engineers at the University of Glasgow and Clyde Space Ltd have developed a practical solution to the increasing problem of space debris. Millions of pieces of 'space junk' are orbiting the Earth as a side-effect of human exploration and exploitation of space.

The pieces range from tiny fragments of bigger objects such as rocket boosters to full-sized pieces of now-defunct equipment. Working satellites and spacecraft can be damaged by collisions with debris, which can travel at velocities of several kilometres per second.

The problem is compounded by every collision which creates more debris in turn; in 2009, the collision of a non-operational Russian communications satellite and a working US satellite created more than 700 pieces of debris.Dr Patrick Harkness of the University's School of Engineering has led the development of the Aerodynamic End Of Life Deorbit System, or AEOLDOS, to help ensure that objects sent into space in future can be removed from orbit at the end of their operational cycle. AEOLDOS is lightweight, foldable 'aerobrake' which can be added to small satellites known as CubeSats before they are launched into low Earth orbit.

Once the satellite has reached the end of its operational life the lightweight aerobrake, made from a thin membrane supported by tape measure-like struts, springs open to generate aerodynamic drag against the extremely thin upper atmosphere that still exists in near-Earth space.

As the satellite falls out of orbit the aerodynamic effects increase, causing the satellite to harmlessly burn up during its descent.

This ensures that it does not become another piece of potentially harmful space debris.Glasgow-based SME Clyde Space, which builds small and micro spacecraft systems, is working with Dr Harkness to apply AEOLDOS technology to the CubeSats it provides to customers all over the world. CubeSats are used for space-related research projects and generally sent into space as secondary payloads on larger launch vehicles.

Dr Harkness said: "It's only been 55 years since Sputnik, the first man-made satellite, was sent into orbit, but since then we've managed to make made quite a mess of the space around our planet. The rate at which we're putting objects into orbit is accelerating each year, which is why it's vital for us to take more control over how they can be removed from orbit once they have served their purpose.

CubeSats are currently aimed at lower orbits than is necessarily desired to ensure they will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere within 25 years in order to meet official recommendations set by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs.

This can curtail the full scientific potential of CubeSats, but AEOLDOS gives users much more control over the end of their project's life and could enable missions to take place at much higher altitudes because they know we can always produce the drag they will need to dispose of the spacecraft in time."

The tape measure deployment system has been developed by Malcolm McRobb, also from the School of Engineering. Coiling the tapes stores energy within them, which can be released years later to deploy the membrane. Mr. McRobb believes that AEOLDOS has applications beyond space debris control.

He explained: "The technology could be used to enable solar sailing missions, where spacecraft can manoeuvre using the pressure of sunlight.

Or it could form the basis of deployable antennae, increasing the sensitivity of small, low-powered spacecraft.We expect that another year to 18 months of development will see the AEOLDOS system available for commercial use through our licensing agreement with Clyde Space.

After we have demonstrated that the technology can work in space, we are looking forward to designing these new and exciting applications for the device."

Craig Clark of Clyde Space said: 'Clyde Space is widely recognized for developing key technologies and products that enable more advanced CubeSat missions, and AEOLDOS is another key innovation that will enable more spacecraft missions in the future.

The team at the University of Glasgow have been able to solve critical problems relating to the drag sail deployment with effective, innovative solutions and we're sure that this development will be used on many small satellite missions in the future as we aim to reduce the problem of space junk for the next generation of space users.'

The development of the AEOLDOS project is part of the University of Glasgow's Space Glasgow Research Cluster, which draws together researchers from across the College of Science and Engineering to work on pioneering space-related projects.

350px-Supreme_Court_US_2010The administration of President Barack Obama said it didn?t object to the appeals court hearing the case of Liberty University v. Geithner.

Liberty University filed with the high court this summer, saying its previous claims should be looked at in a new light after the Supreme Court?s June 2012 decision. The evangelical school was founded by the late Reverend Jerry Falwell.

Liberty University is objecting to a mandate that most people buy health insurance or pay a tax penalty, and a requirement for most employers to offer health insurance to their workers, or pay a fine for each uninsured employee.

Liberty University claimed that the appeals court shouldn?t have used the Federal Anti-Injunction Act as a reason to deny hearing its original lawsuit.

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals will likely hear the case in the spring. Attorneys from Liberty University told Politico that they hope to bring their suit before the Supreme Court at some point.

On October 31, the Justice Department said it wouldn?t object if Liberty?s case were to be heard in the appeals court.

The court could also ask the Justice Department and the university to file new legal briefs.

The historic June 2012 Supreme Court decision on the Affordable Care Act ended three years of drama, for now, about President Obama?s wide-ranging overhaul of the health? care system.

Important parts of the reform effort, called Obamacare by its opponents, are already in place. But many parts of the law go into effect in 2014.

The court is under no obligation to hear the Liberty University case once the appeals court issues a decision.

'Pac-Man' moons: Cassini finds a video gamers' paradise at Saturn

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? You could call this "Pac-Man, the Sequel." Scientists with NASA's Cassini mission have spotted a second feature shaped like the 1980s video game icon in the Saturn system, this time on the moon Tethys. (The first was found on Mimas in 2010). The pattern appears in thermal data obtained by Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer, with warmer areas making up the Pac-Man shape.

"Finding a second Pac-Man in the Saturn system tells us that the processes creating these Pac-Men are more widespread than previously thought," said Carly Howett, the lead author of a paper recently released online in the journal Icarus. "The Saturn system -- and even the Jupiter system -- could turn out to be a veritable arcade of these characters."

Scientists theorize that the Pac-Man thermal shape on the Saturnian moons occurs because of the way high-energy electrons bombard low latitudes on the side of the moon that faces forward as it orbits around Saturn. The bombardment turns that part of the fluffy surface into hard-packed ice. As a result, the altered surface does not heat as rapidly in the sunshine or cool down as quickly at night as the rest of the surface, similar to how a boardwalk at the beach feels cooler during the day but warmer at night than the nearby sand. Finding another Pac-Man on Tethys confirms that high-energy electrons can dramatically alter the surface of an icy moon. Also, because the altered region on Tethys, unlike on Mimas, is also bombarded by icy particles from Enceladus' plumes, it implies the surface alteration is occurring more quickly than its recoating by plume particles.

"Studies at infrared wavelengths give us a tremendous amount of information about the processes that shape planets and moons," said Mike Flasar, the spectrometer's principal investigator at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "A result like this underscores just how powerful these observations are."

Scientists saw the new Pac-Man on Tethys in data obtained on Sept. 14, 2011, where daytime temperatures inside the mouth of Pac-Man were seen to be cooler than their surroundings by 29 degrees Fahrenheit (15 kelvins). The warmest temperature recorded was a chilly minus 300 degrees Fahrenheit (90 kelvins), which is actually slightly cooler than the warmest temperature at Mimas (about minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit, or 95 kelvins). At Tethys, unlike Mimas, the Pac-Man pattern can also be seen subtly in visible-light images of the surface, as a dark lens-shaped region. This brightness variation was first noticed by NASA's Voyager spacecraft in 1980.

"Finding a new Pac-Man demonstrates the diversity of processes at work in the Saturn system," said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "Future Cassini observations may reveal other new phenomena that will surprise us and help us better understand the evolution of moons in the Saturn system and beyond."

Ex-SAC manager granted $5 million bail in trading case

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former SAC Capital portfolio manager was released on $5 million bail on Monday after making his first appearance in a New York court on charges of making illegal trades that hedge fund titan Steven A. Cohen personally signed off on.

Mathew Martoma, 38, of Boca Raton, Florida, was charged last week in what U.S. prosecutors called "the most lucrative" insider-trading scheme ever.

Martoma was accused of helping Cohen's firm avoid losses and reap profits totaling $276 million in the summer of 2008 by using insider tips he obtained from a doctor about Elan Corp and Wyeth LLC. Martoma worked for CR Intrinsic, a unit of Cohen's SAC Capital.

Cohen was not charged with wrongdoing, but prosecutors have said in court papers that the "owner" of the hedge fund signed off on Martoma's recommendation to sell the shares of Elan and Wyeth. A spokesman for SAC Capital said last week that "Mr. Cohen and SAC are confident that they have acted appropriately and will continue to cooperate with the government's inquiry."

At a 13-minute hearing in U.S. district court in Manhattan on Monday, Martoma spoke only once, answering "yes, your honor" to a judge's question. He did not enter a plea.

Magistrate Judge James Cott on Monday agreed to a proposed $5 million bail package for Martoma, who has been free on similar bail conditions since appearing in a Florida court after his arrest on November 20.

Charles Stillman, Martoma's lawyer, has said he is confident his client will be exonerated. Stillman told reporters gathered outside the courtroom Monday that "we took care of business today and we'll be back another day."

Martoma worked for CR Intrinsic in Stamford, Connecticut, until 2010. He is the fifth person associated with SAC Capital, one of the most influential hedge funds, to be charged with insider trading in either a criminal or civil proceeding.

In a criminal complaint, authorities said Martoma spoke in July 2008 to the "hedge fund owner" - Cohen - and recommended selling shares of Elan and Wyeth before a negative announcement on clinical trial results for an Alzheimer's drug jointly developed by the two companies.

U.S. securities regulators, who have filed civil insider-trading charges against Martoma, contend he obtained confidential tips from Sidney Gilman, who was chair of a committee to monitor patient safety during the Alzheimer's drug's clinical trial.

Gilman, an 80-year old neurology professor at the University of Michigan, is now cooperating with prosecutors after agreeing to pay a $186,781 disgorgement. A lawyer for Gilman declined comment last week.

The Securities and Exchange Commission complaint said Gilman worked as a consultant for a so-called expert network. Hedge funds use such networks to gain insight into various industries.

According to the criminal complaint, Gilman scheduled meetings and phone calls with Martoma that allowed him to pass on new information quickly about the drug trial.

The judge set a December 26 hearing for Martoma to return to court, but Stillman said he expected it to be pushed back to a later date.

The case is USA v. Martoma, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-mag-2985.

Any good self-improvement books to recommend?? - General ...

I don't mean books specifically tailored towards Aspergers, like "Aspergers on the Job" or that sort of thing...but rather, books that you have found helpful to overcome some of your challenges. For me, Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" was a great read - my Dad recommended this to me in the late 90s shortly before my Dx - and I found a lot of valuable lessons that I was able to put into practice. Such as, the power of praise, being discrete about tcertain things, how to deal with situations perceived as unfair in a tactful manner, and avoiding correcting those who stated something incorrectly (esp. in front of their peers and what not). These were lessons I could, and did, apply well b/c they didn't necessarily involve spontaneous processing of the big picture / situations, so I could handily incorporate them into my behaviours.

That book has been around for a while, but its lessons are still very much valid.

Another one I haven't yet read, but mean to someday, is Stephen Covey's 7 Habits. The one in particular about "Begin with the end in mind" and "put first things first" could help with executive dysfunction or being guided by the "why" of a situation (but again, maybe not so much the dynamic or spontaneous/unplanned aspects of it).

Granted, many of these self-improvement books are written with neurotypical audiences in mind, but I believe there is always some lesson to be garnered which is applicable to us Aspies. Since we have an innate love of learning. It's just applying the knowledge that can be tricky sometimes.

So, if you have any such book recommendations in mind (and how they helped you) - I'd love to hear your recoms & opinions!!

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican opposition to the possible nomination of Susan Rice to be secretary of state is showing signs of cracking.

Arizona Sen. John McCain now says he'd be willing to meet with Rice, the current U.N. ambassador, and consider her much-scrutinized explanation about how the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, unfolded.

McCain has said GOP senators would do "whatever is necessary" to block Rice if President Barack Obama were to nominate her to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton at the State Department.

On Sunday, McCain was asked on "Fox News Sunday" if Rice could change his mind. McCain said "sure" and that he'd like to meet with her.

McCain and other Republicans have accused the White House of distorting the deadly Benghazi attack for political gain.

Cyber Monday likely to be busiest online sales day

NEW YORK (AP) ? Black Friday is a distant memory. Small Business Saturday is long gone. Now, it's Cyber Monday's turn.

Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed a spike in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving when people returned to their work computers, is the next in a line of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season.

This year's Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row: According to research firm comScore, Americans are expected to spend $1.5 billion, up from $1.25 billion last year on Cyber Monday, as retailers ramp up deals to get shoppers to click on their websites.

Amazon.com, which is starting its Cyber Monday deals at midnight on Monday, is offering as much as 60 percent off a Panasonic VIERA 55-inch TV that's usually priced higher than $1,000. Sears is offering $430 off a Maytag washer and dryer, each on sale for $399. And Kmart is offering 75 percent off diamond earrings and $60 off a 12-in-1 multigame table on sale for $89.99.

Retailers are hoping the deals will appeal to shoppers like Matt Sexton, 39, who for the first time plans to complete all his holiday shopping online this year on his iPad tablet computer. Sexton, who plans to spend up to $4,000 this season, already shopped online on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday and found a laptop from Best Buy for $399, a $200 savings, among other deals.

"The descriptions and reviews are so much better online so you can compare and price shop and for the most part get free shipping," said Sexton, who lives in Queens, N.Y., and is a manager at a utility company.

Sexton also said it's easy to return an online purchase to a physical store than it had been in previous years. "That helps with gifts," he said.

How well retailers do on Cyber Monday will offer insight into Americans' evolving shopping habits. With the growth in high speed Internet access and the wide and increasing use of smartphones and tablet computers, people are relying less on their work computers to shop than they did when Shop.org, the digital division of trade group The National Retail Federation, coined the term "Cyber Monday."

As a result, the period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday has have become busy for online shopping as well. Indeed, IBM Benchmark, which tracks online sales, said on Thanksgiving, a day that historically had not been big for online shopping, online sales this year rose 17.4 percent over 2011. Of that, mobile shopping, or shopping on smartphones and tablets, rose 18.3 percent. Meanwhile, online sales on Black Friday were up 20.7 percent.

For the overall holiday season, comScore predicts online sales will be up 17 percent to $43.4 billion. And the research firm expects online sales to surpass 10 percent of total retail spending this holiday season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall retail sales in November and December will be up 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion

"People years ago didn't have the kind of connectivity to shop online at their homes. So when they went back to work after Thanksgiving they'd shop on the Monday after," said Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org. "Now they don't need the work computer to be able to do that."

But as other days become popular for online shopping, Cyber Monday may lose some of its cache. To be sure, Cyber Monday hasn't always been the biggest online shopping day. In fact, up until three years ago, that title was historically held on the last day shoppers can order items with standard shipping rates and get them delivered before Christmas. That day usually falls in late December.

Even though Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest shopping day this year, industry watchers say it could just be a matter of time before other days take that ranking.

"Of all the benchmark spending days, Thanksgiving is growing at the fastest rate, up 128 percent over the last five years," said Andrew Lipsman, a spokesman with comScore.

ETA calls for talks over "definitive end" with Spain, France

MADRID (Reuters) - Basque separatist group ETA said on Saturday it wanted talks with the Spanish and French governments to negotiate a definitive end to military operations and a handover of its arms.

Basque newspaper Naiz published an advance summary of an ETA statement, which said the group wanted talks over the return of ETA prisoners to the northern Basque region, an end to its military structure, and a full disarmament. The paper said the full statement would be published on Sunday.

ETA said in the statement that successful talks over those three areas "would bring about a definitive end of the armed conflict".

Just over a year ago ETA announced an end to a four-decade armed struggle for independence in which more than 800 people were killed, but did not fully end operations, nor turn over its weapons. ETA has broken ceasefires in the past.

Spain's Interior Ministry could not be immediately reached for comment on Saturday.

The government has repeatedly said it would not negotiate with ETA, and has called on the group to disarm and disband.

ETA said in the statement that it would listen to proposals from both the Spanish and French governments over an end to the conflict.

The group has lost support in the Basque Country and been crippled by numerous arrests and discoveries of arms caches in recent years, mostly in Spain and France.

Earlier this month British police arrested a suspected ETA member in Liverpool linked to several murders, while its military head was arrested in France in October.

The statement came four days after discussions were held between Basque political parties, labor unions, the Catholic Church, and French Socialists in the northern Spanish city of San Sebastian. After that meeting the groups said an end to ETA was close.

In consideration of the once profitable mining sector?here are the top ten reasons why you should avoid mining stocks at all costs?

1. They Go Down ? Owning an investment or asset that goes down in value occasionally is not the type of situation we want to find ourselves in, or become accustomed too. For example, if you wake up one morning (or any morning for that matter), you will see that your mining stocks are down 25%?leaving you with only 75% of your asset. That 25% literally, got up and walked away.?However, if you wake up in the morning with a gold coin in your hand, it will be the same size and weight as the night before?not 25% ?lighter? as in the case of mining shares.

2. Nationalization of Mines - Every government in the world today is minutes away from seizing all natural resource assets(whether they know it or not), including the US, Australia, and especially Canada. There are lots of industries that represent safer risks, ones that governments will not interfere with?such as insurance, banking, and the auto sector. In all likelihood, these governments will be seizing natural resource deposits, auctioning them off to the highest bidders, and using the funds to speculate on mining shares. I?ve seen it happen too many times.

3. It?s Just Paper ? Despite the fact that many individuals and funds?are making millions (and sometimes billions) investing in and building public mining companies, it?s all just a paper game. At some point, the entire paper money and global finance system will freeze up, reset, and all paper assets will become worthless. Remember?if it?s not small enough to fit in your hand and hold, you don?t own it (that includes your house).

4. Manipulation ? It?s commonly believed that the US Federal Reserve and Global Central Banks, are actively shorting and suppressing gold and silver mining stocks. It works very simply?your stock broker sends a monthly financial report to the US Fed which details your mining stock holdings, and then they go to work. They short what you own(even if its just a few thousand shares of a $.50 cent stock), long enough to induce you to sell. Once you?ve sold the position, it gets updated in the broker?s system, and the Fed covers its short positions?and in doing so, drives back up the price of the stock. Unbelievable.

5. They Don?t Go Up With Gold ? Anyone who?s invested in mining shares in the last few years knows that they no longer track the price of the metals. If you want proof of this, simply look at a chart of the GDX compared to gold going back to 2008. Up until that time, the miners outperformed the metals?but those times are history, and due to the reasons on this list, they will not be returning. Many people say they?re undervalued, and will snap up in price?yatta, yatta. We?re in a new economy now, and this time it?s different.

6. They?re At Historical Lows and Going Lower ? Compared against the metals, mining shares are at their lowest levels in nearly 30 years. A 100 year old man was mumbling about this?recently, but again, when we look at the performance of the shares since 2008 (included with the other items mentioned on this list), it?s quite clear the shares are going to go much, much lower.?When an asset is at or near all-time historical lows, that usually means it?s going to be at or near a new all time historical low.

7. The Charts Look Horrible ? When looking at the following chart and applying the science of ?directional analysis?, we can see that the overlying trend is pointing down. As all great investors say, ?The trend is your friend??we must respect the trend, and understand (as proven by the red arrow) that it?s pointing down towards zero.

8. They Have Not Confirmed Themselves - One of the best strategies to keep in mind before we even consider investing in the mining sector (haha, fat chance, I know), is to wait for the shares to move higher and break to all-time highs to confirm that they?re going to go higher in the future. If they can prove they?re going higher, by first going much higher?then we know the coast is clear, and that they?re about to go even higher. At that point we can go ?all in??with as much leverage and borrowed money as possible to sweeten up the deal. After all, the new trend will have proven itself to be in place at that point.

9. George Soros Is Getting Involved - By our higher moral and ethical code, we cannot be involved with any investment that George gets his grubby capitalist hands on. This includes mining shares. He has recently invested hundreds of millions in the GLD and the GDX (a portion of which is in call options), and we simply cannot be aboard any ship he sets his foot on, even if that ship is a luxury yacht. Cork the wine, throw the champagne overboard, the party?s over. George is here. We can either sell him our shares, or even short some, while giving him and the Soros Fund Management team the other side of the trade. Besides, clever old George is only holding paper, and as we all know, it?ll be worthless as soon as the yacht makes it out of port.

10. Societal Collapse ? When society ultimately collapses(due to war, peak oil, hyperinflation, famine, disease, Katy Perry, etc.?there?s too many things [and people] to mention here), the only value mining shares will offer, is in the utility of being taped together into a roll and hung in the bathroom. At that point, items of value will include canned goods, hunting weapons (the outdoors will be the best source of food), a dry place to sleep?and of course, beef jerky.

Reflection

If we allow logic to be our guide in the marketplace at this point in time, it would behoove ourselves to divest of mining shares, and accumulate canned food, quality bows & arrows, pocket knives, and a durable beef jerky (Slim-jims will suffice if nothing else). A forest cabin with double-locked doors would also offer utility?a very small one?just large enough for a twin-size bed and an electric stove.

As John Wayne once said, ?Life?s hard. It?s even harder when you?re stupid??so let us not fall prey to the mining share?proponents?and pranksters, who all assure us this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to invest in the precious metals mining sector.

Dogs learning to associate words with objects form these associations in different ways than humans do, according to research published November 21 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Emile van der Zee and colleagues from the University of Lincoln, UK.

Previous studies have shown that humans between the ages of two to three typically learn to associate words with the shapes of objects, rather than their size or texture. For example, toddlers who learn what a 'ball' is and are then presented other objects with similar shapes, sizes or textures will identify a similarly-shaped object as 'ball', rather than one of the same size or texture.

Earlier research with dogs has shown that they can learn to associate words with categories of objects (such as 'toy'), but whether their learning process was the same as that of humans was unknown.

In this new study, the scientists presented Gable, a five year old Border Collie, with similar choices to see if this 'shape bias' exists in dogs. They found that after a brief training period, Gable learned to associate the name of an object with its size, identifying other objects of similar size by the same name. After a longer period of exposure to both a name and an object, the dog learned to associate a word to other objects of similar textures, but not to objects of similar shape.

According to the authors, these results suggest that dogs (or at least Gable) process and associate words with objects in qualitatively different ways than humans do. They add that this may be due to differences in how evolutionary history has shaped human and dog senses of perceiving shape, texture or size.

The bottom line: Though your dog understands the command "Fetch the ball", but he may think of the object in a very different way than you do when he hears it. As the authors explain, "Where shape matters for us, size or texture matters more for your dog. This study shows for the first time that there is a qualitative difference in word comprehension in the dog compared to word comprehension in humans."
