Could not knowing the official state drink of South Carolina cost Stephen Colbert an appointment to U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint?s seat?
The Charleston-raised comedian, who had a brief tongue-in-cheek presidential campaign and started his own Super PAC, has launched a Twitter campaign on his TV show ?The Colbert Report? asking his fans to tweet Gov. Nikki Haley to tell her why he should be the next senator.
?Nation! Tell @nikkihaley why I should take over for Jim DeMint! #SenatorColbert Could our Better Tomorrow be... Tomorrow?? he tweeted.
On his television show Thursday night he alluded to the national coverage his campaign had already received.
?I?m not going to sit here and say ?I should be South Carolina?s next senator,?? Colbert said. ?Not when so many other people are saying it for me.?
Haley on Friday took to Facebook, her social medium of choice, to respond to the campaign. She alluded to her last visit on ?The Colbert Report? in which she and the comedian quizzed each other about the state. Colbert didn?t guess that the official drink is milk.
?Stephen, thank you for your interest in South Carolina?s U.S. Senate seat and for the thousands of tweets you and your fans sent me. But you forget one thing, my friend. You didn?t know our state drink. Big, big mistake?
