Wall Street little changed as Fed, ECB awaited

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks were little changed on Tuesday as investors held off making big bets before the conclusion of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting, which may result in additional action to stimulate the economy.

Equities in the United States and Europe have rallied recently, with U.S. stocks mostly flat on Monday as investors paused following the best two-day run this year, on increased expectations both the Fed and the European Central Bank will plan further actions to stimulate their respective economies at meetings this week.

Last week, ECB President Mario Draghi said the ECB was ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro, fueling expectation the bank could revive its bond purchase program to help lower the borrowing costs of debt-stricken Spain and Italy.

"This move higher that we've seen is directly tied to the markets' expectations there would be further Fed easing and Draghi will be in very much lockstep coordination with the Fed in terms of trying to ease our way out of this predicament," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"Draghi lit the fuse but the ball is now in Chairman Bernanke's court."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 32.24 points, or 0.25 percent, to 13,040.77. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> lost 2.82 points, or 0.20 percent, to 1,382.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> shed 1.12 points, or 0.04 percent, to 2,944.72.

Government data showed consumer spending fell in June for the first time in nearly a year when accounting for inflation, while household income rose 0.5 percent.

The S&P/Case-Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.9 percent in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping economists' expectations for a 0.5 percent gain and suggested the recovery in the housing market continues to gain traction.

In the final piece of economic data for the session, consumer confidence unexpectedly rose in July to 65.9 versus expectations of 61.5 as Americans were more optimistic about the short-term outlook than they were about their current conditions.

Pfizer Inc shares climbed 1.3 percent to $24.02 the largest U.S. drugmaker reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings and affirmed its 2012 profit forecast.

Coach Inc slumped 14.9 percent to $51.55 as the worst performer on the S&P 500 after the upscale leather goods maker reported lower-than-expected fourth-quarter sales. The S&P consumer discretionary index <.gspd> dropped 0.8 percent.

Anheuser-Busch InBev , the world's largest brewer, fell short of second-quarter earnings expectations, selling less beer and spending more on distribution and marketing new U.S. brands. U.S.-listed shares fell 2.6 percent to $78.

Aetna Inc posted weaker quarterly earnings as expenses rose, but the results were still higher than analysts had expected. Shares of the No. 3 U.S. health insurer advanced 0.5 percent to $37.34.

Companies expected to report earnings after the close include Electronic Arts and FMC Corp .

According to Thomson Reuters data through Tuesday morning, of the 303 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date for Q2 2012, 66 percent have reported earnings above analyst expectations. The average over the past four quarters is 68 percent.

India goes gaga over shooter Gagan Narang

LONDON: Gagan Narang is a tall, portly, fair man with red cheeks. He looks like a successful businessman with a relaxed, nonchalant air about him.

The 29-year-old had serious business to attend to on Monday morning. He came to the Royal Artillery Barracks at 9am near Woolswich Arsenal with his air rifle in tow at the 10m hall, and made it do some serious talking at station No. 15.

Three hours later, he was in the final hall and went through a roller coaster ride before firing his last shot and then turning around to wave in relief as a packed hall roared in thunderous approval.

The man from Hyderabad had got that "huge stone off my chest" on his way to clinching India's first medal at the London Games here, a priceless bronze. Beijing gold medallist and defending champion Abhinav Bindra failed to make the final, slipping in the final series with three 9s, succumbing to time pressure.

Narang had won the Asian gold, the Commonwealth gold and even the World championship gold. This was what he wanted desperately. His eyes had spoken volumes four years ago in Beijing when he tied for the eight spot but missed the final berth on a count-back. "My time will come", they said. Well, there were no countbacks on Monday, no nerves, no misgivings -- just plain, simple fearless shooting. And Narang's eyes were shining in relief when he walked out into the mixed zone, a huge smile on his face.

He started off slowly, with perfect scores (100) in the first two series in qualification. Bindra was already finishing his third round. He was fourth and Bindra 10th. Soon, Bindra moved up to seventh after the fourth series while Gagan stumbled. He missed his seventh and last shots in the third series for a 98 and slipped to the 11th spot.

His coach Stanislas Lapidus said something, and he nodded and was back at his business. He was back at No. 6 after the fourth series of 100. He clung on it as the countdown began. "10 minutes to go," said the referee. That was enough for him to finish his series with another perfect score. 598/600 was a brilliant score and he was third in the qualification. He has done the perfect bit (600/600) before but this was a different stage altogether. Bindra had by then picked up his rifle and walked away.

With qualification scores added in the finals, Narang had given himself a shot at the gold. The first two - Italy's Nicolo Campriani and Romania's Alin George Modoveanu - were just a point ahead.

The final, comprising of 10 shots each, swung like a yo-yo. Narang started with a 10.7 and the crowd roared as he moved up to the second spot. His next shot was a poor 9.7 and he was down to fourth.

He then followed it up with 10.6, a 10.7 and 104 and was third, just 0.1 point behind the Italian. He slipped to fourth again after a 9.9 with his seventh spot. Tension was mounting and Narang shot a shocking 9.5.

"It's over man," said an agonizing journalist sitting in the front row. Well, it was not. The others too succumbed to pressure. Narang followed it with a 10.3 and with China's Tao Wang and Dutchman Peter Hellenbrand breathing down his neck, he finished with a 10.7, kick-starting celebrations in the hall packed with Indian journalists, fans and officials.

Narang, unlike Bindra did not hide his emotions. He waved, blew kisses and smiled on the podium like a young boy who had got a long cherished prize - it was a coveted medal and long due.

Critics, these past few years, made him a medal contender and then hanged him saying he was mentally not tough enough. He went into a shell four months ago, refusing to talk to journalists. He refused to reply to mails from Hanover before coming to London. On Monday, he was willing to talk to anyone who chased him, hugged him, kissed him. As he later said, this medal has made him complete.

HAULING WATERCRAFT - Rubin Aguilar's blog

Hauling Watercraft ? Tips and Tricks You Need to Know before Hitting the Road

SUVs offer a lot of benefits, from more seating capacity to the ability to load them up with pretty much any type of cargo you might want. Of course, they?re also very popular for towing watercraft. If you?ll be heading to the lake, river or beach, having an SUV will help ensure that you can get there with your boat or jet-ski. Of course, there are a few things you need to know before you hook up your trailer to your SUV. Not knowing a few facts can cause serious problems on the road, and can even damage your vehicle, so it pays to be informed before hitching up that trailer.

Towing Capacity

Your first consideration is going to be the towing capacity of your SUV. Before you hitch that boat to your vehicle, you?re going to need to make sure that it can handle the load. You need to understand that there?s no such thing as an ?average? SUV towing capacity. Some have boatloads (pun intended) and some have none.

For instance, the Acura MDX can tow 5,000 pounds, while the RDX can only tow 1,500. The Chevrolet Avalanche 2WD can pull 8,100 pounds, but the 4WD version can only pull about 7,900. The Chevy Tahoe is a similar category, with 8,500 pounds for the 2WD version and 8,200 for the 4WD version. Things get even stranger with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The Sport 4WD version can tow just 1,000 pounds, but the Sport 4WD with the 3.73:1 axle can pull 3,500 pounds.

As a general rule, 4WD vehicles tend to have a lower towing capacity, while smaller, compact SUVs might have next to no capacity at all. If you?re unsure about what your vehicle can pull, you have two resources available to you. Check your owner?s manual and see if it lists a towing capacity specific to your vehicle, or contact a dealership. Of course, there are some handy websites online that can help you figure out what you can pull, including authority sites like Edmunds.com and Car and Driver.

Tow Package

You also need to make sure that your SUV has a towing package installed. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of SUVs and trucks do not come with a tow hitch installed. You will also find that a full OEM towing package includes more than just a hitch ? transmission coolers are also important parts of the system to ensure that your vehicle stays in good shape. If you don?t have a tow package, contact your dealer or head to your local mechanic?s shop. As a note, some SUVs only have OEM packages available, while others only have aftermarket solutions. Work with an expert and find out what your options are.

Your Trailer Makes a Difference

Towing watercraft requires more than just ?any old trailer?. Your trailer is going to be a very real investment, and you need to ensure that it stands the test of time and hard use. Make sure it?s certified by the National Marine Manufacturer?s Association. This ensures that the trailer is constructed to withstand the harsh environments near water sources, whether that?s a river, pond, lake or the ocean.

Offloading Your Watercraft

When you offload your watercraft, it?s best to do so from a boat ramp. This ensures that your boat (or other craft) has enough water beneath it to float fully and easily come clear of your trailer. It can also help avoid damaging underwater obstructions like rocks, tree trunks and the like. Always make sure that the area in which you offload is clear of obstructions and that there are no other boaters or swimmers in the vicinity before hitting the water.?

The story of the world's first free-range computer virus

4 hrs.

How two Pakistani brothers and one piece of runaway code created the anti-virus industry.

It was early 1987, and security expert Roger Thompson had just seen his first computer virus, in a programming class at a technical college in Brisbane, Australia. "Back in those days, there really weren't any programs you could use to look for these things," recalls Thompson, who now works for anti-virus company AVG. "Somebody just handed me a disk." On the boot sector of the disk, there was a program called Brain.

"I took a look at the computer to see where it had written itself, and it wasn't anywhere on the hard drive. I thought, 'Oh, it's not a virus at all.' So I just moved on and put another disk in. Suddenly the virus was on the second disk. It was seeding every floppy I put in."

Prank programs had been around as long as there were computers to run them on, but truly self-replicating code hadn't been seen outside of university computer labs. The code was hovering in working memory, copying itself onto the boot sector of every disk that entered the machine. The program was non-destructive, but virulent ? and because those 5 1/4-inch disks were the only way to move data onto or off of a computer, Brain was able to span half the globe by the time it arrived in Brisbane.

Once Thompson isolated the code, he found an even bigger surprise. The creators' names were written into every copy: Basit & Amjad Alvi of Brain Computer Services, Lahore, Pakistan.

By the end of the year, Brain had spread through America and most of Europe, hopping from disk to disk, computer to computer. To leap across the ocean ? to reach Roger Thompson in Brisbane, say ? someone had to take an infected floppy onto a plane or ship. This was before the web: It was a lot harder to cross the ocean. And as the virus spread, so did the rumors: Was this some kind of revenge against software pirates? Were the brothers trying to kick off an IT security firm?

The truth is less dramatic. As Amjad describes it to BuzzFeed, he and his brother were just playing around with assembly language: "At the time, there were not multi-tasking OSs or multi-tasking programs, so we found some interesting code that stayed resident in the background of the memory." It was a powerful trick. "For more than a year, we were experimenting, just learning things. It was not planned that we were going to make a virus."

Patient zero was a hospital in the provincial capital of Quetta, 600 miles west of Lahore. In the fall of 1986, the Alvi brothers visited the hospital to install some software they'd developed. On the way, Amjad realized one of his disks was infected with the self-replicating program they'd been experimenting with. He decided to leave it there. "If someone wanted to steal my program, I figured I would know that program was stolen from that specific, isolated medical computer," he says. Having left it on a business computer in rural Pakistan, there was no reason to think the program would spread.

It took two years for Amjad to get his first call. Thanks to the time difference, it came in the middle of the night, from a student reporter at Miami University. She had found his number on a floppy disk.

There had been computer viruses in labs before, most notably Fred Cohen's experiements at USC in the early 1980s, but as long as the programs were confined to a lab, it was impossible to know how quickly or thoroughly they might spread. Simply releasing a program into the wild was impossible, due to ethics concerns, so it took a minor pandemic like Brain to make the IT world take notice. As Thompson puts it, "Nobody actually believed viruses existed until they got one, and then they became a believer right away."

Within a year of Brain's release, John McAfee and Eugene Kaspersky had both set up shop selling virus protection software. Shortly after, F-Secure in Finland, F-Prot in Iceland and Doctor Solomon's Antivirus in England followed suit, along with Thompson's own Leprechaun Software. Suddenly, anyone with a digital infrastructure was aware of the risk posed by viruses, and willing to pay money to protect themselves. A new industry sprang up in the space of a few years.

The Alvi brothers, for the most part, were left out. The western anti-virus businesses had little interest in cornering the Pakistani market, and in the years it took Brain to spread, Basit and Amjad moved on to other interests. Brain Inc. is a telecom company now. In 1998, they installed Pakistan's first high-speed fiber network. Even with the rise of militarized malware like Flame, Mr. Alvi hasn't seen much reason to get back into the anti-virus business. "If there can be a physical assault there can be a cyber assault as well," he told us. "It is not any different in my opinion." And for an honest man, coding viruses isn't much of a business opportunity.

Galaxy Note unofficially gets Jelly Bean

Android fragmentation is a notorious pain, but it seems some crafty software developers are taking matters into their own hands. Via PocketNow, XDA-Developers forum member?XpLoDWilD has posted a preview of the new?CyanogenMod 10 that is described as a ?free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean? that ?can be used without any need to have any Google application installed.? The folks at PocketNow?tried installing the mod onto the Samsung (005930) Galaxy Note and have, so far, come up with mixed results.

?So far, we?ve found the CM10 previews to be exceptionally stable and (most importantly) fast,? they write. ?How about [on] the Galaxy Note? Well, that might be the exception. While the CM10 preview works?in terms of functionality, there are some performance issues that keep it from being as incredibly smooth as [on the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X].?

At the same time, they also say that ?it?s faster than even the mature builds of Ice Cream Sandwich, so if you have the Note, and you?re feeling brave, we?recommend?that you go ahead and run the third-party ROM.?

Since CyanogenMod 10 is a third-party mod that carries risks for users who install it,?XpLoDWilD has written a disclaimer saying he is not responsible ?for bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed.? In other words, users should think very carefully before installing the software.

Warm reception expected as Romney lands in Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he meets with them Sunday ? and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.

Romney touched down in Tel Aviv Saturday night as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.

The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments ? and because he's not Obama.

"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."

In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Romney told the Israeli daily Haaretz before his arrival that Washington's commitments to Israel should be "as clear as humanly possible" given the changes in the region.

"When Israel feels less secure in the neighborhood, it should feel more secure of the commitment of the United States to its defense."

With polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.

Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials. Romney attended swimming events in London on Saturday morning ahead of his planned flight to Tel Aviv.

In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.

He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. The Romney campaign said the likely GOP nominee only had time in his schedule to meet with one Palestinian leader and that Fayyad has an existing relationship with Romney. The Abbas camp did not offer an explanation for why no meeting was planned.

Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.

Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.

"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."

Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."

"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."

Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.

Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.

Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.

Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.

Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."

Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

Small Business Profile: President of Perkins Management Services ...

When Nicholas Perkins, President of Perkins Management Services company, read the biography?Black Titan: A.G. Gaston and the Making of a Black American Millionaire,?his vision of how to become a business leader crystalized. During his heyday, Gaston was?thought to be the richest black man in America and a pioneer among black entrepreneurs. Born in 1892 in a log cabin in Demopolis, Alabama, A. G. Gaston?was raised by his grandparents who had been slaves. He would go on to become one of the first black entrepreneurs to dominate the business market using vertical integration to control the supply chain along every aspect of his many enterprises as early as the 1940s.

Perkins, who always knew he would become an entrepreneur, was emboldened by the story of Gaston to pursue his dreams?after reading Black Titan in college. After starting his small business at 24 in 2005, Perkins grew his corporation into a multimillion-dollar service provider. Perkins Management Services company, based in Fayetteville, NC, now offers food services, commercial cleaning, laundering services and dry cleaning to colleges, universities and military institutions in seven states. TheGrio spoke to Perkins about his experiences starting out, what he learned along the way and his belief that entrepreneurs must take responsibility for others.?His words of wisdom may inspire those of you seeking to start a small business in a down economy, just as Gaston?s life story sparked Perkins? beginnings.

theGrio: How did you get your initial financing to start your business?

Nicholas Perkins:?When I started my company I put in a bid for a small food services contract in Fayetteville. Like most small businesses, getting capital to start a business was very challenging, especially for a minority business. I was not able to secure any loans or anything to start my company. What I had to do was operate out of my savings and I worked [all the jobs related to] my contract myself. I was the breakfast cook, I was the food delivery guy, I was the janitor, I was everything that it required, in order for me to be able to keep labor costs down and mange my business profitably. Then I took the profits I earned for that project and reinvested in the business and it grew that way.

What businesses are winning in this economy, making them safest for new entrepreneurs?

Those that start a business under the auspices of providing a particular product that relies on discretionary income won?t make it in this economy. The government is the largest buyer of products and services in the country. I would encourage anyone trying to get into business to look into to becoming a [government] contractor.

How did you land your first government contract? That can?t be easy.

I had to better understand the way the 8(a) small business development program works.?I spent a lot of time early on bidding for contracts that I was just spinning my wheels on because I did not have the past performance that the government was looking for that would score me in such a way that I would not lose points in the technical evaluation.

I found myself bidding on contracts, reaching for the competitive range, yet I could not win the contracts because we did not have the past performance that the government was looking for. So as a result I said well okay, what is it that I?m doing wrong??The first three or four years of [participation in] the 8(a) program should be focused on the 8(a) sole source requirement. Meaning that at that point in time, any contract that was valued at $3.5 million or less could be sold directly to the small business non-competitively.

That is how you build your past performance. You go directly to the agency, meet with the contracting officer, market your product or service to them, get the 8(a) sole source requirement and that is another jewel in your crown.

Then what you do is you build up your past performance on the 8(a) sole sources. That will allow you to, two or three years later, successfully compete for and win the 8(a) competitive requirements.

So I had to learn that the hard way. Once I figured that out I realized, okay that?s how you get the performance you need to be able to win the 8(a) competitive contracts.

It was not really up until recently that we were able to gain the type of financial partnerships in order to be able to get to the next level. Most small businesses find it challenging to find the necessary capital they need in order to be able to grow their businesses. That is one of the greatest challenges in this country that we have got to solve. Access to capital limits the growth of businesses, especially in the minority community.

White House: Americans feel a "great deal of anxiety" on economy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Friday many Americans feel a "great deal of anxiety" about the sluggish pace of growth caused by the 2007-2009 recession, and urged Congress to enact policies pushed by President Barack Obama to create jobs and bolster the recovery.

"We're still in a position where we are pulling ourselves out of the very deep hole caused by the Great Recession and there is still - of course - a great deal of anxiety in the country about the economy," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters, when asked about the slowdown in second quarter consumer spending.

The economy grew at a rate of 1.5 percent between April and June, losing momentum seen earlier this year and marking the weakest pace of growth since the third quarter of 2011, the Commerce Department said on Friday.

"Exploding" Termite Species Discovered

You're confusing tax rates with tax receipts. People didn't actually pay those higher rates. The high marginal rate was really nothing more than a subsidy for cities and counties. If you had money to invest you put it in double-tax-free muni bonds so you didn't have to pay any taxes on it. That was the real reason tax receipts went up when the tax rates were lowered - people moved their money out of munis because you could make more money even after taxes.

Not only that, but there were all sorts of ways to shelter your money from taxes that have since been eliminated. Everybody who made any kind of money had controlling interest in an money losing oil well or chinchilla farm or some other BS business. They wrote off the family car and half the house. Also, it was a hell of a lot easier to do cash business. Currency reporting requirements didn't happen until 1985, so a lot of people were completely off the IRS's radar.

In short, those high tax rates didn't hurt the economy because nobody paid them. The Economist had an article about this a few years back (behind a pay wall, unfortunately). It turns out wealthy people all over the world pay at most about 25% tax on their income, even in places with very high marginal rates like Japan and Sweden. As tax rates go higher they change their behavior. They take fewer risks and spend more time dealing with taxes and less time trying to make money. Worst case they move their money out of the country and invest it where tax rates are lower.

Look at corporate taxes. The US now has the highest corporate tax rates in the world. And yet, corporations pay almost nothing in taxes, because they've adjusted their operations to account for the tax code.

Jeannie?s work has taught her ?that having a big dream, a vision ? is really important.? She?ll even tell you that sometimes you can achieve a dream without even realizing it. It?s all part of the airy, fun attitude Jeannie brings to every aspect of her life.

Life as a voice-over artist must be pretty cool. How did you get into a job like this?

In 1998, I was fresh out of college, working as an actress and waitressing in the evenings to make extra money. A friend of mine who had been working in voice-overs called me in a panic. The woman he was supposed to read a radio commercial with had cancelled at the last minute. He was calling to ask if I could be at the studio in a half an hour to fill in for her. I was a little intimidated, but half an hour later, I was doing my first voice-over for a jewelry company in Philadelphia. Little did I know that it would lead to a very fulfilling 14-year (and counting) career!

What does your typical job schedule and day look like? Does that change at any point during the year?

The best thing about the voice-over world is the light schedule. Most of the time, I?m recording radio and TV commercials, so my clients book me by the hour. On a typical week, I tend to work about eight hours total in the booth. I also spend about four hours per week coaching voice-over students in my home studio or over Skype.

A few times a year, I take on an audio book project. The audio book work is so satisfying; I love being the storyteller and sinking into a good work of fiction. But audio books take a lot of time. First, I read the book to myself, play around with how the character voices should sound (it?s not unusual to have 40 character voices in one audio book!) and research any pronunciations/accents that might be needed. Then I typically record for seven hours per day until the audio book is complete. It?s quite a challenge; it really stretches me as a voice-over artist and I just love it.

Was there ever a moment in your career where you?ve thought, ?I made it!?? What was it?

I signed on to be ?the voice? of the Sprout Network about six years ago and have been working with Sprout ever since. You?ll hear me in between shows on Sprout announcing what?s coming up next, holiday specials, etc. My voice matched the network so well and the people at Sprout are so wonderful to work with that it just felt like a match made in heaven. Also, the work is very consistent. When you?re a freelancer, so much time is spent looking for your next job that finding a regular client who uses you for six years and counting is like striking gold.

What challenges keep you awake at night?

I take my coaching practice seriously. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to give my students the very best training possible. Voice-over work is a subtle craft and sometimes the slightest little nuance in the voice can make a huge difference in the overall read. Guiding someone into hearing the nuances is a very interesting and sometimes challenging process. I only take on highly-motivated students who are really ready to delve into the work. In the end, they often end up inspiring me with their passion and creativity.

Is work/life balance ever a problem with you? If so, what is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?

Even though my actual work schedule is light, I?m always working on improving my craft. I still take classes and spend a lot of time listening to voice-over artists and audio book narrators I admire. Since I don?t have a 9 to 5 schedule, it can be easy for me to work into the evenings and lose myself in ?self-improvement? mode. However, the tactic I?ve taken to avoid this is by adhering to my husband?s work schedule. He has a 9 to 5 job, so when he gets home, that?s my ?call it quits? time, too.

What are some of the rules you live by?

I?m also a certified life coach and I?ve learned through coaching that having a big dream ? a vision for where I want my life and career to go ? is really important to me. I write down my dreams in detail just for the fun of it. I?m also very visual, so I love cutting photos out of magazines that inspire me and align with my dream life. I don?t put a lot of pressure on myself to make any of it happen or worry about how it will happen, I just keep it light and fun. But I keep dreaming big. Years ago, I wrote down a dream vacation and totally forgot about it. Three years later, I got chills on the plane home from Italy when I realized I?d just taken the exact vacation I?d written down three years prior without even realizing it.

Also, I choose not to believe in ?competition? in a traditional sense. I have no interest in being a cutthroat competitor. If I can?t take a job for whatever reason, I?ll recommend another voice talent who I think does great work. If the client continues to hire that person, I?m grateful that I could be part of their success. Practices like that help me grow into the person I want to be.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful as a voice-over artist?

One of the big misconceptions about voice-over work is that you have to have a ?special sounding? voice, like James Earl Jones, but it isn?t true. In fact, no one comments on the ?specialness? of my voice when I?m not in the booth! A great sounding voice certainly won?t hurt you, but you need a lot more than that to make a career in voice-over work happen.

A great voice-over artist needs acting skill. You need to be able to take direction easily, create characters quickly, have the ability to read the same script 20 different ways, make the writer?s words sound natural, have a good ear for subtle nuance and have a strong sense of timing.

What advice do you have for women who aspire to walk in your shoes?

If you don?t have an acting background, acting classes or private voice-over classes are a must for getting started. Improv classes are especially helpful since much of voice-over work requires you to make quick choices on the spot.

Also, don?t give up. Breaking into voice-over can take some time, but if you?ve developed your skills and have passion for the work, the career potential and lifestyle is worth the wait!

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I just love commercial work, so in five years, I?d like to be the voice of a few major household brands. I?d be a great voice of PetSmart, Trident gum or Neutrogena. So, hopefully the ad agents for those companies are reading this right now!

What is your niche in the voice-over world?

Over the years, I?ve learned that knowing your niche is vitally important to growing your career. For a long time, I fought my niche. The sound I do best is cheery, friendly, light, fresh. Think minty gum, dryer sheets, kids toys, you get the idea. For a long time, I tried to be something I wasn?t: the sexy girl. I wanted to have a sexy voice, I really did, but guess what? I do NOT have a sexy voice! Or at least, there are other women who do it much better than I do. Once I surrendered to being my wholesome, perky self, the work flowed in so much more easily.

I may never be the voice of a perfume ? unless it?s a Disney princess scent ? but that?s okay. Now, even my website reflects my niche: it has a bright, cheery, fresh look to it. It helps clients cast me easily for what I do best.

I really encourage my students to find their niche early, but the interesting thing is that it often takes a little wrestling with. At first, many of my students feel uncomfortable with the very thing they?re best at. So much of ?you? comes through your voice that it sometimes brings to your attention truths about yourself you may not want to face. But, that?s what listeners want. Truth. They want to hear genuine, relatable truth coming from a real person. If you try to hide who you really are when you?re in the booth, your listeners will hear ?the fake? immediately and tune you out. I love the Oscar Wilde quote ?Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.? It?s true in life as well as voice-overs.

Barclays employees boost Romney campaign

LONDON (AP) ? The former chief executive of Barclays dropped out of Mitt Romney's Thursday night fundraiser in London, but Bob Diamond had already sent a check for $2,500.

So have 82 others who listed their employer as Barclays or Barclays Capital on U.S. Federal Election Commission records, including two who gave the maximum to the Romney campaign, both in 2011 and 2012. One person gave the maximum to Barack Obama.

The role of Barclays bankers as significant contributors to Romney's campaign has drawn attention since Barclays became the first bank to admit that employees were involved in manipulating a key market index, the London interbank offered rate (LIBOR), a scandal which cost Diamond his job.

Domestic Abuse Counseling ? How Couples in Abusive Relationships

?

One of saddest things about people in abusive relationships is the way they use their counseling losses and therapy misses to lock themselves in their despair, until the lid pops and they end up in a domestic abuse divorce.

These people know they walk on eggshells and sleep on rocky waters. They reach out to couples therapy and oftentimes find that the dynamics underlying their discord solidifies.

Once they both acknowledge that they are getting nowhere in therapy, they stop the counseling. Then when the abuse stirring in their relationship is sufficiently felt by both of them, a new therapist becomes the target of hope once again.

While the hope is sweet, the prospect for a positive outcome remains the same as it did prior, because the therapy is the same. They engage a different therapist, but the same therapeutic orientation.

Seeking Therapy Without Treating the Problem

After the second try (i.e. stab at it?no pun intended), they conclude that therapy does not work and cannot influence their dysfunctional relationship. They appreciate that both therapists share the same observations. And they themselves even admit to what the professionals observe.

However, at this juncture, they live on the tail of two failed therapy attempts. Consequently, one or both of them believes that therapy simply doesn?t work, or doesn?t work for them?and certainly not for their problems.

What surprises me is that it doesn?t occur to couples that they are in the wrong therapy. It?s possible that therapy is such an obscure thing for the general public, that they see it as one intervention.

I liken it to the belief that ?medicine? is what you do when you hurt or when you are ill. Now this may sound like an over simplification, but imagine this: A podiatrist?s treatment doesn?t correct your back pain, and you walk around believing that podiatry doesn?t work.

The Divorce Remedy for Domestic Abuse

Then the going gets rough for the couple once again, but this time they have cold feet?and they prefer not to go the therapy route, so they hold tight until the day comes when one of them is served with divorce papers.

This scenario, as I have described, happens to more domestic abuse couples in divorce court then not. In other words, it is common practice for abusive relationships in route to divorce. I lived it firsthand and observe it in couples coast-to-coast.

If you are in an abusive relationship seeking help for the control and abuse issues that you live, find help directed toward the dysfunctional dynamics in your relationships. If you don?t get specialized treatment, you will spend your promise and exhaust your hope before giving yourself the benefit of an appropriate intervention for your problem.

Gaza Christians fear for future of tiny community

(AP) ? Christians in overwhelmingly Muslim Gaza have long fretted in private about the survival of their tiny community.

But their fears exploded publicly when two members of the flock recently converted to Islam. Christians staged a rare public protest, accusing Muslims of pulling followers from their faith.

The converts, who had been hiding to evade angry relatives, eventually surfaced and said they voluntarily changed religions. Gaza's ruling Islamic militant Hamas movement reiterated respect for freedom of worship and Christian institutions.

But the uproar highlighted the growing sense of vulnerability among Christians here. They are a dwindling minority among a mostly devout Muslim majority, mostly hemmed into the tiny sliver of land because of movement restrictions imposed by Israel and Egypt. And they say some Muslims are doubling their efforts to convert them, emboldened by the atmosphere of Islamic fervor fostered by Hamas since it seized power in Gaza in 2007.

"We aren't safe anymore," said Josef Elias, a 44-year-old Christian from Gaza City. "This is a conspiracy against our existence in the Holy Land."

Fewer than 3,000 Christians live among Gaza's 1.7 million Muslim residents, and their numbers have rapidly shrunk in recent years, mainly because of the territory's turmoil. Some Christian families fled during the destruction from Israel's three-week military campaign against Hamas militants in the winter of 2008-2009. Others emigrated as Gaza's economy crumbled under Israel and Egypt's blockade, imposed after Hamas' takeover. Low birth rates also erode the community.

Those who remain say they feel increasingly unwelcome amid the more assertive religiosity everywhere around them.

With the latest conversions, only 10 Christians are known to have turned to Islam in the past eight years, according to community members. But some Christians say that while there is no officially sanctioned push to turn them to Islam, individual Muslims have become pushier in trying.

The informal social pressure can range from strangers on the street urging them to embrace Islam to colleagues at work or university persistently discussing their Muslim faith with Christian colleagues. Particularly vulnerable to the advances are youth wanting to join Gaza's wider society and gain greater opportunities for marriage and jobs ? as well as unhappily married Christians, since conversion to Islam is one of the few ways to get a divorce from their Church marriages.

The community's tiny size makes it difficult to maintain independent institutions that preserve their identity. The community offers private schools for the younger children, but most Christian youths attend public high schools and later vie to get into Islamic University, considered the best in Gaza. In those environments, Christian youths mix with deeply devout Muslim students and teachers ? and parents worry about their influence rubbing off onto their children.

In Palestinian society, Muslims and Christians tend to emphasize that relations between the two communities are harmonious, and that they are bound by a shared attempt to shake off Israeli occupation of lands they want for a future state.

"The (Christian) community is part of our people," said Hamas government minister Bassem Naim when asked about the fears of Gaza's Christians. "They have the full right to practice their faith."

At the same time, clear lines are drawn between Muslims and Christians. As in most parts of the Middle East, religion in the Palestinian territories is a badge of membership rather than a matter of personal choice. Those leaving the fold face expulsion from their families and communities.

Overall, some 160,000 Christians live in the Holy Land, including 110,000 in Israel and the rest in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, said Bernard Sabella, a Palestinian researcher.

The Gaza government said 2,980 Christians are registered in the territory, mostly Greek Orthodox. Christians said they believed the figure is closer to 1,500.

In recent years, several Christian institutions were attacked by suspected Muslim hardliners. In at least two cases, including the torching of the local YMCA, assailants were caught and sentenced to prison.

The most recent conversions touched a nerve in particular because the two ? 24-year-old Ramez al-Amash and 32-year-old Hiba Abu Dawoud ? came from prominent families. The two, who converted separately, disappeared from sight. Abu Dawoud took her three young daughters with her. Rumors swirled until a Muslim cleric announced last week they were under his protection.

Reaction was fierce. Community members led by Gaza's Greek Orthodox Archbishop Alexious blared that the two had been forced to convert.

"They kidnapped them ... they use even drugs," the archbishop told dozens of agitated Christian protesters gathered last week in the centuries-old Greek Orthodox Church of St. Perfidious in Gaza City. The demonstrators alternately chanted against Hamas, demanded the government bring back the converts, and shouted that their community was in peril.

But the converts later told Hamas-linked TV stations that they freely adopted Islam after months of deliberations. Al-Amash said he had long questioned his faith and learned about Islam through the Internet and Muslim friends. He said he had asked his family to understand.

"I told them I am good, and it wasn't against my will. Be my friends and my family," he said.

Abu Dawoud, wearing a blue Muslim headscarf and a long loose black robe, said, "Nobody forced me. Through my studies in the college and university, I came to love the religion ... I am very happy with this decision." Her girls, ages 12, 9 and 7, were shown on a pro-Hamas TV station cheerfully singing along to Islamic children's songs.

Abu Dawood said she had learned about Islam at an Islamic college in Gaza where she was studying the arts. At the church protest, her now estranged husband, Khaled Hilal, said that when she first started her studies she had complained that her schoolmates constantly hounded her about Islam and why she should convert.

Hassan al-Juju, head of the Islamic court that oversees conversions, said a panel of six judges repeatedly questioned the new converts, "Are you sure? Are you doing this freely?"

The families are trying to recover from the trauma surrounding the conversions.

Abu Dawoud has met with Hilal ? they are now technically divorced ? and will be discussing visitation rights, said Iyad al-Alami, deputy director of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, which is mediating between the families and converts.

Al-Amash wants to live with his family again, but wants his mother to declare that she respects his decision. He still fears he'll be attacked by Christians angry at his decision, said al-Alami.

Among some in the community, the conversions struck a chord of panic.

"We lived together for years in Gaza: The sound of church bells ringing used to mix with the call of prayer from the mosque," said Elias, a government worker. But now, fearing for his children, Elias said he was looking for a way out.

"I am thinking of leaving with my family," he said.

Apple's Q3 hardware sales by the numbers: 17 million iPads, 26 million iPhones, 4 million Macs

Apple's out with its third quarter financials today and, as is customary, it's provided some sales figures for all of its big hardware categories. Those are headlined by record sales of the iPad, which jumped a whopping 84 percent year-over-year and 44 percent from the previous quarter to 17 million units sold during Q3 (no word on a breakdown by iPad model, though). iPhone sales were also up year-over-year to 26 million units, although that represents a more modest year-over-year growth of "just" 28 percent (and a drop from 30 million in Q2), no doubt due in part to folks holding off on a purchase until the next model comes out.

A bit more surprising are the company's Mac sales numbers which, despite a new slate of MacBooks, saw year-over-year growth of only two percent for sales of an even four million in the quarter -- compared to growth of seven percent in Q2. That seems to be explained at least in part by a dip in desktop sales, which were down 13 percent year-over-year while laptops were up 8 percent, resulting in some fairly flat growth overall. Lastly, as has been the trend for some time now, the company's venerable iPod line is the one area that continues to see a consistent decline as phones and tablets take over, with it dropping ten percent year-over-year to sales of 6.8 million for the quarter. As Apple noted on its earnings call, though, those iPod numbers were actually better than it expected, and the iPod touch continues to be the most popular device in the category far, accounting for more than half of all iPod sales.

Update: Apple didn't divulge any Apple TV sales figures in its earnings report, but Tim Cook was happy to provide them on the company's earnings call. The company sold 1.3 million Apple TV units during Q3, up an impressive 170 percent year-over-year. Still officially a "hobby," apparently, but not one that Tim Cook says he'd be pursuing if the company didn't believe in it.
